Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) is the pathogen responsible for swine pasteurellosis, which can impede their growth and even cause death, leading huge economic losses to the global pig industry. P. multocida can be divided into 5 serotypes, and existing vaccines have low cross-immunity protection. Therefore, developing a vaccine that can provide effective cross-protection is essential for preventing swine pasteurellosis and reducing the abuse of antibiotics. In this study, six dominant antigenic proteins of P. multocida (PlpE, OmpA, OmpH, VacJ, Omp87 and Cp39) were selected. Through bioin

In the realm of infective endocarditis, a distinct and infrequent player emerges - Pasteurella multocida, an organism more commonly associated with zoonotic infections, now warranting careful consideration in this unique case report. P . multocida is a Gram-negative, facultative anaerobic cocco-bacillus and a common member of the oral bacterial flora of cats and dogs. In humans, it commonly causes skin and wound infections after bites and scratches. Disseminated P . multocida infection seeded into the heart valve is very rare and has only been reported in about one case per year worldwide with

INTRODUCTION: Pasteurella multocida is a widespread respiratory pathogen in pigs, causing swine pneumonia and atrophic rhinitis, and the capsular serogroups A and D are the main epidemic serogroups in infected animals. This study investigated the protective effects of serogroup A and D bacterins against current circulating P. multocida strains, to better understand the immunity generated by bacterins.
METHOD: 13 serogroup A (seven A: L3 and six A: L6 strains) and 13 serogroup D (all D: L6 strains) P. multocida strains were isolated, and used as inactivated whole cell antigen to prepare P. mul

We encountered a 51-year-old male patient who was not immunocompromised. Thirteen days before his admission, his right forearm was scratched by his pet cat. Swelling, redness, and purulent discharge appeared at the site, but he did not seek medical attention. He developed a high fever and was hospitalized with a diagnosis of septic shock, respiratory failure, and cellulitis on plain computed tomography. After admission, the swelling on his forearm was relieved with empirical antibiotics, but the symptoms spread from his right axilla to his waist. We suspected necrotizing soft tissue infection

Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida), a primary pathogen of bovine respiratory diseases, has become resistant to many antibiotics, including fluoroquinolones and aminoglycosides. A large number of studies have proved that SOS reaction plays a crucial role in the development of antibiotic resistance. We have shown that the deletion of SOS response-related genes (recA, recO) can delay the development of fluoroquinolone resistance in P. multocida, therefore, it can be used as potential targets for antibiotic resistance inhibitors. In this study, we have used molecular docking to screen RecA prote

Pasteurella species are known to be one of the most frequently isolated in oral microbiota of domestic and wild animals, because of that, they are associated with skin and soft tissues infections secondary to bites and scratches. Systemic infections are uncommon, but are associated with dissemination from localized infections and some risks factors related to immunosuppression. We report a case of Pasteurella multocida bacteremia in an 88 years old patient, associated with food sharing with his dog; a bacteremia mechanism never described before in the medical literature.

Pasteurella multocida is a bipolar staining gram-negative coccobacillus that resides in the nasopharynx of many animals, most notably felines. It is a common cause of soft tissue infections following animal bites but has rarely been reported to cause epiglottitis. Here we describe a case of epiglottitis and bacteremia due to P. multocida following exposure to a feral cat. The patient required emergent cricothyrotomy due to airway compromise. He was successfully treated with 14 days of beta-lactam therapy and achieved a full recovery.

Pasteurella is one of the zoonotic pathogens that can cause variety of serious infections in animals and humans such as bacteremia, septic shock, endocarditis, meningitis, prosthetic and native valve infections, osteomyelitis, skin and soft tissue infections, abscesses, and even pneumonia with empyema. However, there have been few reports of upper respiratory involvements like tonsillitis and epiglottitis in humans. We present a case of recurrent Pasteurella glossitis after a cat scratch which has not been reported in humans.

Avian Pasteurella multocida is the causative agent of fowl cholera, a disease much affecting the poultry industry. In order to study the efficacy of the recombinant subunit vaccine constructed with ptfA gene of avian P. multocida, the ptfA gene fragment amplified by PCR from avian P. multocida was cloned into the prokaryotic expression vector pET32a and the recombinant plasmid pET32a-ptfA was obtained. The pET32a-ptfA was expressed in Escherichiacoli BL21(DE3) and the target protein rPtfA was purified. The purified protein was then mixed with Freund's adjuvant and the recombinant subunit vacci

In addition to being the causative agent of fowl cholera (FC), Pasteurella multocida is also one of the most prevalent opportunistic pathogens associated with respiratory diseases in various hosts. However, understanding of the traits that distinguish the virulent isolates that cause FC is still limited. The objective of this study was to characterize P. multocida isolates of Brazil by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis in order to determine if strain-type correlates with virulence or with 22 previously studied virulence genes. The PCR-RFLP was used to classify th

The increased frequency of isolation of Pasteurella multocida capsular type B from rabbitries in north-western India prompted this investigation into the role of this organism in inducing disease in rabbits. Ten rabbits were divided into two groups of five animals. Group I rabbits were infected intranasally (IN) with 1 ml of inoculum containing 2 × 10(5) colony forming units/ml, while rabbits in group II were given 1 ml phosphate buffered saline IN. The rabbits in group I developed respiratory distress, increased rectal temperature and severe dyspnoea, with death occurring 24-48 h post infecti

Pasteurella multocida (PM) is gram-negative coccobacillus that is commonly acquired through a cat scratch or bite. The standard antibiotic of choice for treating PM is penicillin. We present a case of PM empyema in a penicillin allergic 56-year-old female who has a history of contact with domestic cats and is known to have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and a chronic history of smoking. The patient was treated successfully with Levofloxacin as alternative treatment to penicillin.

We report a case of rapidly progressive pneumonia and meningoencephalitis in a 2-month-old breastfed infant. Culture of cerebrospinal fluid was positive for Pasteurella multocida. No bite or scratch injury as site of entrance could be detected clinically or at autopsy, therefore aerogenic transmission in droplets from a household pet must be considered. Infections with P. multocida have been frequently reported in infants and elderly people; however, rapidly progressive and lethal infections in infants have been described only rarely. These infections must be regarded as preventable through ad

Pasteurella multocida is a Gram-negative bacterium known to infect a wide range of domestic and wild animals. The increasing incidence of P. multocida isolated from cases of fowl cholera and hemorrhagic septicemia has led to a renewed interest in this pathogen as well as in the development of vaccines. In this study, PCR primers were designed to amplify the fragment of plpB gene from P. multocida FC-Pakchong (A:1). The purified PCR product of plpB gene consisting of 831 base pairs was inserted into the pGEX-5X-1 plasmid, which expressed the GST protein, and then transformed into E. coli. The p

AIMS: The aim of this work was to develop a rapid diagnostic test for Pasteurella multocida.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay using primers derived from the 23S rRNA gene sequence of Past. multocida was developed. The PCR assay correctly identified all 144 isolates of Past. multocida tested, including type strains of the three subspecies as well as the reference strains for the Heddleston and Carter typing schemes. Of 20 closely related bacteria from the family Pasteurellaceae tested, only the type strains of Past. canis biovar 2 and Past. avium biovar 2 were posit

Recently acquired field isolates and archived isolates from our collection of Pasteurella multocida were analyzed for production of dermonecrotic toxin. Detection of the toxin was carried out using a fetal lung feline (FLF) cell line and a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. The dermonecrotic toxin gene (ToxA) was also detected using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique. Results from the 3 methods were compared. Field isolates (group 1) came from a commercial herd that had clinical signs of atrophic rhinitis. Fifty-six (17.9%) strains were isolated from 312 nasal s

The authors report a case of Pasteurella multocida meningoencephalitis in a 5 week-old female infant, with special attention to clinical, laboratory and evolutive features. A moderate neurological sequel was observed at follow-up examinations. A brief review of the importance of P. multocida in human pathology is presented on the basis of the international literature, since the authors did not find any Brazilian reports. The most important feature on P. multocida is the prevalence of bacterial meningitis at the extremes of age. Otherwise, significant mistaken was found between Gram stained sme

A Pasteurella multocida isolate of 12:A serotype from a rabbit caused typical pulmonary pasteurellosis and death in pasteurella-free rabbits by intranasal exposure. Rabbits stressed with hydrocortisone and inoculated with 12:A Pasteurella multocida organisms developed a higher prevalence of pneumonia than rabbits not treated with hydrocortisone. Typical 12:A Pasteurella multocida was isolated from nasal cavity, trachea, and lungs and was most prevalent in nasal cavities. Surviving rabbits developed serum agar gel precipitating antibody beginning 15 days post-inoculation. The data showed that t
