Natural History of Visual Acuity and Microperimetry-Based Functional Outcome Measures of the Macula in Patients with Geographic Atrophy: A Retrospective Chart Review Study in Germany.

Background/Objectives: Geographic atrophy (GA) is an advanced form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) leading to the progressive and irreversible loss of visual function. Characteristics of GA include atrophic lesions resulting from the loss of photoreceptors, retinal pigment epithelium, and choriocapillaris. During GA progression, atrophic lesions typically advance from the macular periphery to the center, affecting foveal light sensitivity and visual acuity. This study analyzed changes in light sensitivity and visual acuity during the natural course of GA progression using the topogra

Comparison of visual acuity and complications between primary IOL implantation and aphakia in patients with congenital cataract younger than 2 years: a meta-analysis.

To analyze the visual acuity and complications between primary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation and contact lens wearing, this literature search was performed with data on patients with congenital cataract younger than 2 years published in March 2019. Seven identified studies enrolling 675 eyes were selected for analysis. Patients with primary IOL implantation owned better visual acuity than those with aphakia who wore the contact lens (weighted mean difference = 0.161; 95% CI, 0.108-0.214). For visual axis opacification (VAO), primary IOL implantation increases the incidence of VAO compare

Unique characteristics of optical coherence tomography (OCT) results and visual acuity testing in myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) antibody positive pediatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Optic nerve involvement in anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody associated syndrome (MOG ab syndrome) tends to have unique features. Few studies have reported optical coherence tomography (OCT) measures like retinal nerve fiber layer thickness findings in the setting of pediatric MOG ab syndrome. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to compare visual acuity between MOG ab positive and MOG ab negative pediatric cohorts and examine correlations with OCT findings. METHODS: We included outpatients less than 18 years of age who had optic neuritis (ON) of at least one eye

Optic nerve compression predicts acuity loss while orbital crowding predicts field defects in patients with early-to-moderate intraorbital cavernous haemangiomas.

BACKGROUND: Intraorbital space-occupying lesions impair visual function, yet whether this stems primarily from optic nerve compression, elongation or orbital apex crowding remains unclear. This study investigated the differential impact of these mechanical factors on visual acuity (VA) and visual field (VF) in patients with intraorbital cavernous haemangiomas. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analysed 130 patients with unilateral intraorbital cavernous haemangiomas. Key imaging parameters were measured from CT/MRI and categorised into optic nerve elongation, compression (eg, optic-ner

Improvement of uncorrected visual acuity and contrast sensitivity using Aurovue Vivid Continuous Focus Vision (CFV) lens in cataract patients at RSCM Kirana.

BACKGROUND: The primary goal of cataract surgery has evolved beyond visual restoration toward comprehensive refractive outcomes. In aging yet functionally active populations such as Indonesia, access to premium multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) remains limited, creating demand for cost-effective extended-depth-of-focus (EDOF) alternatives. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate visual performance, contrast sensitivity, defocus profile, IOL stability, and patient-reported outcomes following implantation of the Aurovue Vivid Continuous Focus Vision (CFV) IOL. METHODS: This prospective interventional case s

Predictive potential of optical coherence tomography parameters for the prognosis of decreased visual acuity after trabeculectomy in open-angle glaucoma patients with good vision.

BACKGROUND: Trabeculectomy (trab) is the most effective surgical procedure for lowering IOP and preventing glaucoma progression. However, decline in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) is one of the most serious postoperative complications of trab. Here, we investigated methods to predict decreased BCVA after trab in glaucoma patients with good preoperative BCVA. METHODS: This study included 35 eyes of 35 open-angle glaucoma (OAG) patients (male / female: 21 / 14, age: 64.0 ± 9.7 years old, preoperative intraocular pressure: 15.9 ± 5.4 mmHg, mean deviation: -18.1 ± 5.6 dB) with preoperative B

Validation of electronic visual acuity (EVA) measurement against standardised ETDRS charts in patients with visual field loss from inherited retinal degenerations.

BACKGROUND: With the increase in clinical trials testing therapy for retinal disease, there is a need to ensure that outcome measures are both accurate and standardised. The US Food and Drug Administration favours the use of visual acuity measured using ETDRS logMAR charts. The loss of visual field can interfere with visual tracking across the charts, leading to increased variability of measurements. Electronic visual acuity (EVA) presents the optotype on the centre of a screen, thereby removing the tracking element of the task, and may provide a more precise measurement. METHODS: Visual acui

Association among Blink Rate, Changes in Ocular Surface Temperature, Tear Film Stability, and Functional Visual Acuity in Patients after Cataract Surgery.

PURPOSE: To investigate the association among the ocular surface temperature (OST), tear film stability, functional visual acuity (FVA), and blink rate in patients after cataract surgery. METHODS: We recruited 98 eyes of 69 patients (mean age, 73.7 ± 5.2 years) 1 month after phacoemulsification with implantation of acrylic intraocular lenses and assessed slit-lamp microscopy, corrected distance VA, FVA, noninvasive tear breakup time (NIBUT), and OST. We defined the changes in the OST from 0 to 10 seconds after eye opening as the ΔOST. We measured the FVA and blink rate using the FVA measureme
