Chest wall deformities can be divided into 2 main categories, congenital and acquired. Congenital chest wall deformities may present any time between birth and early adolescence. Acquired chest wall deformities typically follow prior chest surgery or a posterolateral diaphragmatic hernia repair (Bochdalek). The most common chest wall deformities are congenital pectus excavatum (88%) and pectus carinatum (5%). This article addresses the etiology, pathophysiology, clinical evaluation, diagnosis, and management of these deformities.

BACKGROUND: Pectus anomalies constitute 95% of chest anomalies. Pectus carinatum (PC) and excavatum (PE) are often asymptomatic in childhood. However, symptoms and signs such as chest pain, dyspnea, and mitral valve prolapse (MVP) can be seen in pectus anomalies. Demographic characteristics and accompanying cardiac signs in children with pectus deformity were investigated.
METHODS: In this study, the clinical findings for children with pectus deformity, and the incidence of MVP and other concomitant heart diseases detected in echocardiographic examinations were evaluated.
RESULTS: Eighty-two

INTRODUCTION: Pectus excavatum is a depression of the sternum. Pectus carinatum, in contrast, is the convexity of the sternum. The mixed form is an intermediate condition. Surgical intervention is the treatment of choice. The techniques most commonly used include the Ravitch and the Nuss procedures.
AIM: To assess the immediate and long-term results of the original modification of the surgical treatment for anterior chest wall deformation.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The modification is based on the Ravitch procedure. The difference is that the ends of the resected cartilages are shaped like a bla

We report a case of Trichorhinophalangeal syndrome type I (TRPS1) in a 16-year-old boy who was referred due to painless finger deformities over the last year. Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LGP) had been diagnosed at age 7 and required surgical treatment at age 12. Parents were healthy and non consanguineous; there was family history of pectus carinatum of maternal lineage. On examination the patient presented a bulbous nose, thin and sparse scalp hair; pectus carinatum; clinodactyly of the first and fifth fingers and hard painless swelling of all of the proximal interphalangeal joints; brachydac

PURPOSE: Shaded surface display (SSD) technology, with 3-dimensional computed tomography reconstruction, has been reported in a few small series of patients with congenital or acquired chest wall deformities. Shaded surface display images are visually attractive and educational, but many institutions are hesitant to use these secondary to cost and image data storage concerns. This study was designed to assess the true value of SSD to the patient, family, and operating surgeon, in the evaluation and management of these children.
METHODS: After institutional review board approval, we performed

In 88 patients with pectus deformities radiologic chest indices and routine pulmonary function tests were measured before and 1 to 20 years after corrective surgery. A combination of anteroposterior indices at the upper and lower level of the chest were investigated to quantitate and to discriminate the different pectus deformities. The study comprised four groups: pectus excavatum, pectus carinatum, pectus deformatum and pectus excavatum with scoliosis. These indices were also assessed in 250 healthy males and females. Generally, several indices showed significant and discriminative changes i

In most cases, correction of a pectus deformity is performed for cosmetic reasons. The main indication for corrective therapy is impaired body image and self-esteem due to the deformity. In these instances, patients suffer from a lower quality of life that is not correlated with the severity of the chest wall deformity. After correction of a pectus excavatum (PE) or pectus carinatum (PC) patients experience a significant improvement in body image and self-esteem. For many, corrective surgery is life changing as it leaves patients feeling satisfied with the appearance of their chest, and this i

Chest wall deformities are congenital disorders characterized by abnormal development and appearance of the thoracic wall. The most common form is the pectus excavatum deformity, known as shoemaker's chest. Pectus carinatum, known as pigeon chest, is the second most common deformity. In general, most patients are asymptomatic, but cardiopulmonary problems may accompany the disease. The indication for treatment is mostly cosmetic. Treating patients before they reach adulthood increases the chance of success. Surgical treatment can be open or minimally invasive.

Pectus excavatum (PE) and pectus carinatum (PC) are the most common anomalies of the thoracic cage and they have been recognized since ancient times [1-3]. The two conditions differ in their appearance, and their effect on lung function. There is no direct correlation between the appearance of the deformities and the clinical symptoms. Whether, and when these deformities should be corrected as well as with which method (surgical or conservative) remain controversial. The following article reviews the current concepts regarding the pathophysiology of both conditions as well as the advances in t

BackgroundPectus excavatum and carinatum are the most common anterior chest wall deformities in children and adolescents. With growing awareness and easy access to online resources, patients increasingly seek information about these conditions from artificial intelligence platforms.ObjectiveThe aim of this study is to evaluate the artificial intelligence model Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT) by analyzing its responses to frequently asked questions about pectus deformities and assessing their accuracy and comprehensiveness.MethodsWebsites frequently used by patients with pectu

Chest wall deformities such as pectus excavatum, pectus carinatum, and cleft sternum can be isolated malformations or dysmorphic features of genetic associations, monogenic disorders, and various numeric and structural chromosomal aberrations. In contrast to the most important syndromes such as Marfan syndrome or Noonan syndrome that can be associated with a chest wall deformity and for which the causative genes are known, etiology of isolated chest wall deformities is still a matter of research. Therefore, an interdisciplinary approach, particularly in patients with additional symptoms is str

BACKGROUND: Pectus excavatum and carinatum are two of the most commonly observed chest wall deformities in pediatrics. The standard diagnostic evaluation for these conditions includes either chest radiograph (CXR) or computed tomography (CT). Our research aims to develop a novel and reliable way of quantifying chest wall deformities in the clinic setting without radiation exposure.
METHODS: Using a handheld structured light scanner, we created three-dimensional (3D) models of patients with chest wall deformities through an IRB-approved protocol. Raters from a variety of backgrounds were then

Patients presenting for mammography are different ages and sizes and have varying body habitus; they include men, those who arrive on a stretcher or in a wheelchair, and those with very small breasts, large or wide breasts, pectus excavatum or pectus carinatum, a barrel chest, or kyphosis. The true professional must know how to image patients who deviate from the norm. In addition to competent positioning skills and anatomical knowledge, the mammographer needs a thorough knowledge of the various projections and the skills to modify any projection to meet the needs of individual patients.

Congenital chest wall deformities are considered to be anomalies in chest wall growth. These can be categorized as either rib cage overgrowth or deformities related to inadequate growth (aplasia or dysplasia). Rib cage overgrowth leads to depression of the sternum (pectus excavatum) or protuberance of the sternum (pectus carinatum) and accounts for greater than 90% of congenital chest wall deformities. The remaining deformities are a result of inadequate growth. Evolution in the management of congenital chest wall deformities has made significant progress over the past 25 years. This article w

We report on a family in which four relatives were affected with an autosomal dominant syndrome of unusual facial appearance, nasal abnormality, conductive deafness, pectus carinatum, and symphalangism. This appears to be only the second report of the WL symphalangism syndrome of Herrmann and the first studied in a Japanese family.
