An investigation of predictors of successful aging in the workplace among Hong Kong Chinese older workers.

BACKGROUND: We examined associations between successful aging in the workplace (adaptability and health, positive relationship, occupational growth, personal security, and continuous focus on goals) and two major factors of work stressors (work family conflict and discrimination against older workers) and coping resources (perceived organizational support, supportive human resource policies, and social support from friends and family) among Chinese older workers in Hong Kong. Furthermore, we also examined whether coping resources moderate the negative effect derived from work stressors on succ

Validation of the Detroit Area Study Discrimination Scale in a community sample of older African American adults: the Pittsburgh healthy heart project.

This study examined the construct validity of the Detroit Area Study Discrimination Questionnaire (DAS-DQ) in 49 healthy African American adults, with respect to its association with global measures and daily experiences of psychological demand. Daily experiences of psychological demand were obtained using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methods. Everyday Mistreatment, as measured by the DAS-DQ, was significantly related to global reports of perceived stress and depression but was unrelated to measures of hostility and social desirability. Everyday Mistreatment was significantly related

Alcohol and visual performance.

1. The authors examined the effect of acute alcohol consumption on a set of visual tasks: visual short term memory, depth perception, and attention. 2. In a repeated measurement design, thirteen subjects performed the tasks once sober and once intoxicated with 0.8 g/kg body weight pure ethanol in orange juice (33% alcohol). Subjects underwent a neuropsychological (Benton test) and a psychophysical test (vernier discrimination) both assessing visual short term memory, the test d2 as a measure of attention and concentration, and a psychophysical depth perception task. 3. Subjects demonstrated si

LGBT communities and substance use in Queensland, Australia: Perceptions of young people and community stakeholders.

Sexual minority young people use licit and illicit substances at disproportionate levels. However, little is known about the perceptions of substance use among members of LGBT communities. This paper reports the results of a content analysis of 45 semi-structured interviews about substance use in LGBT communities with sexual minority young people (n = 31) and community stakeholders (n = 14). Results indicated both sexual minority youth and community stakeholders perceived the use and acceptance of substances to be higher in LGBT communities compared to the general population. Participants iden

Addressing stigma and discrimination through ethical community-based TB policies.

Tuberculosis (TB) control is not only an issue for clinical intervention but also considered as one that requires ethics and community-responsive practices to reduce stigma and discrimination. In this research by using mixed methods, we will analyse how stigma affects patient's engagement with tuberculosis services and assesses whether policies that are applied in communities uphold principles of dignity, autonomy, and confidentiality. Quantitative survey data from 120 TB patients included four domains of stigma: self-stigma, perceived stigma, enacted discrimination and structural discriminati

Psychosocial burdens in early- versus late-onset dementia: analysis of discrimination, stress, and loneliness in the All of Us Research Program.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Early-onset dementia (EOD, onset before age 65) is relatively rare but often devastating for patients and families. Individuals with dementia face stigma and psychosocial burdens; however, it is unclear whether those with EOD experience worse psychosocial outcomes than those with late-onset dementia (LOD) or no dementia. This study examined differences in psychosocial outcomes across EOD, LOD, and no-dementia groups. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from the All of Us Research Program surveys and linked electronic health records (EHR

Weight discrimination and up-to-date breast and cervical cancer screening in US women.

OBJECTIVE: Little research has investigated whether people's experiences with weight-related discrimination serve as a barrier to cancer screening. This study examined the association between weight discrimination and receipt of up to date (UTD) cervical and breast cancer screening in a demographically diverse sample of US women with representation across the body mass index (BMI) spectrum. METHODS: In 2021, women aged 25-64 years completed an online survey. Multivariable logistic regression assessed the association between perceived weight discrimination (as measured by the Stigmatizing Situ

Discrimination among adults with craniofacial conditions.

The primary goal of this study was to establish the level of perceived discrimination experienced by adults with congenital craniofacial conditions in Australia and to examine predictors of discrimination. Specifically, this study tested whether social support mediates the relationship between discrimination and health. Adults (n = 93) who had been treated at the Australian Craniofacial Unit, Women's and Children's Hospital, Adelaide for congenital craniofacial conditions (not including cleft lip and/or palate) completed questionnaires examining satisfaction with life, quality of life, anxiety

Neighborhood experience and hoarding disorder.

Hoarding disorder is a relatively common psychiatric condition with a variety of adverse social and individual consequences. People with hoarding report high rates of loneliness and interpersonal dysfunction; however, little is known about how people with hoarding experience and function within their broader social systems (e.g., neighborhoods and communities). Neighborhood experience mediates the effects of one's environment on mental health outcomes, suggesting that it may be relevant to psychiatric disorders such as hoarding disorder that are accompanied by social dysfunction. Sources of Stigma and its Relation to Internalized Stigma in Women with Borderline Personality Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) has a high prevalence, presenting with self-injurious behaviors, suicide attempts and other psychiatric comorbidities. This condition is accompanied by high levels of stigma and self-stigma, driving to deleterious effects on prognosis. The present study aimed to compare demographic and clinical characteristics of women diagnosed with BPD with low and high internalized stigma and to address internalized stigma dimensions severity (disclosure, positive aspects, and discrimination) between the source of perceived stigma. METHODS: A total of 106 w

Factors Associated with Planned Future Use of PrEP in the Next 3 Months and Likelihood to Use PrEP Among Black Cisgender HIV-negative Women in Texas.

Identifying and then addressing barriers and leveraging facilitators is important to help increase pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use among Black women vulnerable to HIV acquisition. The present cross-sectional study examined what factors were associated with future plans to use PrEP, and general likelihood to use it among a convenience sample of 152 adult, Black cisgender women from three metropolitan areas in Texas. The final multivariable logistic regression model revealed that relationship status (aOR = 0.20, 95% CI: 0.05-0.73, p < 0.05), PrEP anticipated stigma (aOR = 0.29, 95% CI: 0.10-

Cognitive-Affective-Behavioral Pathways Linking Adversity and Discrimination to Daily Pain in African-American Adults.

The tendency to ruminate, magnify, and experience helplessness in the face of pain - known as pain catastrophizing - is a strong predictor of pain outcomes and is associated with adversity. The ability to maintain functioning despite adversity - referred to as resilience - also influences pain outcomes. Understanding the extent to which pain catastrophizing and resilience influence relations between adversity and daily pain in healthy African-American adults could improve pain risk assessment and mitigate racial disparities in the transition from acute to chronic pain. This study included 160

Mental health of the non-heterosexual population of England.

BACKGROUND: There has been little research into the prevalence of mental health problems in lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people in the UK with most work conducted in the USA. AIMS: To relate the prevalence of mental disorder, self-harm and suicide attempts to sexual orientation in England, and to test whether psychiatric problems were associated with discrimination on grounds of sexuality. METHOD: The Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey 2007 (n = 7403) was representative of the population living in private UK households. Standardised questions provided demographic information. Multiple marginalization, discrimination, and disordered eating among youth aged 10-11.

OBJECTIVE: Although rates of weight discrimination are on-par with racial, ethnic, and gender discrimination, comparatively less work has examined impacts of weight-based discrimination in youth, including on disordered eating. Knowing whether experiences of weight-based discrimination, including in youth with multiply-marginalized identities, are associated with disordered eating could identify vulnerable youth and inform intervention efforts. METHOD: Youth (N = 11,875) ages 10-11 were recruited through the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. Logistic regressions using cross

Moderating the link between discrimination and adverse mental health outcomes: Examining the protective effects of cognitive flexibility and emotion regulation.

Discrimination is associated with mental health problems. While prior research has demonstrated the significance of emotion regulation in explaining the onset and development of discrimination-related anxiety, few studies investigated this dynamic with cognitive flexibility among sexual and/or racial minority individuals. The current study incorporated cognitive flexibility to investigate its potential buffering effects on discrimination-related anxiety. 221 individuals, 37.6% of whom (n = 83) identified as sexual and/or racial minorities, responded to an online questionnaire about their level

HIV and intersectional stigma among people living with HIV and healthcare workers and antiretroviral therapy adherence in the Dominican Republic.

BACKGROUND: HIV-related stigma, discrimination, and social marginalization undermines optimal HIV care outcomes. More research examining the impact of HIV-related stigma, discrimination, other interlocking forms of oppression, and antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence is needed to optimize HIV treatment programming. This study uses data from two clinics in the Dominican Republic to examine client and healthcare worker (HCW) perceptions of HIV and intersectional stigmas among people living with HIV. METHODS: Surveys exploring demographics, HIV-related stigma, various dimensions of discriminat

The impact of civil union legislation on minority stress, depression, and hazardous drinking in a diverse sample of sexual-minority women: A quasi-natural experiment.

RATIONALE: A small but growing body of research documents associations between structural forms of stigma (e.g., same-sex marriage bans) and sexual minority health. These studies, however, have focused on a limited number of outcomes and have not examined whether sociodemographic characteristics, such as race/ethnicity and education, influence the relationship between policy change and health among sexual minorities. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of civil union legalization on sexual minority women's perceived discrimination, stigma consciousness, depressive symptoms, and four indicators

Discrimination Fully Mediates the Effects of Incarceration History on Depressive Symptoms and Psychological Distress Among African American Men.

AIM: Using a nationally representative sample of African American men, this study investigated the associations between lifetime history of incarceration, discrimination, and mental health (e.g., depressive symptoms and psychological distress). We hypothesized that discrimination would fully mediate the association between incarceration history and mental health outcomes among African American men. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design, our analysis included 1271 African American men who participated in the National Survey of American Life (NSAL), 2001-2003. Incarceration history was the ma

Pathways from Childhood Adversity to Prescription Drug Misuse Among Young Adult African Immigrants.

PURPOSE: African immigrants remain underrepresented in research on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and substance misuse. This study examined the relationship between ACEs and non-medical prescription drug use (NMPDU) among young adult African immigrants in the United States and explored whether mental health distress, perceived discrimination, and self-esteem mediated this relationship. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were drawn from a cross-sectional survey of 599 African immigrants in the United States; analyses focused on a subsample of 297 young adults ages 18-25.
