Perception and action in 'visual form agnosia'.

A single case study of a patient with 'visual form agnosia' is presented. A severe visual recognition deficit was accompanied by impairments in discriminating shape, reflectance, and orientation, although visual acuity and colour vision, along with tactile recognition and intelligence, were largely preserved. Neuropsychological and behavioural investigations have indicated that the patient is able to utilize visual pattern information surprisingly well for the control of hand movements during reaching, and can even read many whole words, despite being unable to make simple discriminative judge

[Prosopagnosia. A rare disorder of visual perception].

Prosopagnosia is a rare neurological sign, characterized by disturbance of recognition of faces. It is important to remember that prosopagnosia can appear as a result of a brain injury, and as such may be a major disability to the patient. We report a case of a nine year old boy with prosopagnosia due to brain injury at the age of 18 months. The main injury was localized to the boy's left hemisphere, but his right hemisphere was probably also affected. Most post mortem examinations of patients suffering from prosopagnosia show bilateral or right-sided parietal, temporal and occipetal pathologi

Voice perception deficits: neuroanatomical correlates of phonagnosia.

Voice perception (recognition of familiar voices and discrimination of unfamiliar voices) was studied in brain-damaged patients and normal controls. Left- and right-brain-damaged subjects were tested on familiar voices (25 famous males) and 26 pairs of unfamiliar voices. Deficits in recognizing familiar voices were significantly correlated with right-hemisphere damage; discrimination of unfamiliar voices was worse in both clinical groups than in normal controls. Computerized tomographic scans indicated that an intact right parietal-lobe was present in all cases of normal voice recognition, whi

Perception of aperiodicities in synthetically generated voices.

The purpose of this study was to investigate univariate relationships between perceived dysphonia and variation in pitch perturbation, amplitude perturbation, and additive noise. A time-domain, pitch-synchronous synthesis technique was used to generate sustained vowels varying in each of the three acoustic dimensions. A panel of trained listeners provided direct magnitude estimates of roughness in the case of the stimuli varying in pitch and amplitude perturbation, and breathiness in the case of the stimuli varying in additive noise. Very strong relationships were found between perceived rough

Hemispheric lateralization for speech perception in stutterers.

Sixteen adult, right-handed, moderate-to-severe atutterers (12 males, 4 females) and 20 nonstuttering controls (10 males, 10 females) were given a dichotic nonsense-syllable test to determine hemispheric lateralization for speech. Both male and female stutterers evidenced right-ear advantages in syllable identification similar in magnitude to those found for normals. These data confirm other reports of no difference in cerebral speech lateralization for stutterers and nonstutterers and, therefore, lend no support to theories that relate stuttering to abnormalities in cerebral lateralization. Social Priming in L1 Japanese Speech Perception.

Research on social priming in speech perception has focused on Western contexts and typically examined aggregate effects rather than temporal dynamics. To address these gaps, we investigated how social primes modulate L1 Japanese speech perception over time using a visual matched-guise transcription-in-noise task. University students in the Tokyo area transcribed native Japanese sentences while viewing one of four visual primes: an East Asian face, a Southeast Asian face, a Black face, or an East Asian face with a Chinese name. Results revealed nonlinear learning trajectories, with accuracy im

Gaze perception under vertical asymmetries in illumination.

Strong lighting from above is common in everyday environments and this statistical regularity has shaped the function of the human visual system. Here we investigate the influence of vertical asymmetries in illumination on the perception of gaze direction, a ubiquitous social cue that we derive from the appearance of another person's face and which provides an important input to social cognition by conveying the focus of that person's attention. We find that changes in the appearance of the human face that result from changes in vertical lighting direction cause a systematic shift in the appar

Reconsidering the role of imagery in perception.

How much of what we see is imagined? Perception is a constructive process, supplementing the information available in sensory inputs to build representations of the world, as when one perceives a cat behind a chain-link fence as a whole, intact object, though it produces only a fragmented image on the eye. A recent movement in cognitive science and the philosophy of mind argues that mental imagery supplies much of the material for constructing perceptual representations-filling in the missing parts of the cat, for instance. On this "Constitutive View" of imagery's role in perception, perceptua

The computational dynamics of shape orientation perception.

How does the brain transform retinal information into representations of oriented objects? The most comprehensive computational explanation to date - the coordinate-system hypothesis of orientation representation - proposes that this transformation relies on the computation of four parameters that jointly define the relationship between a shape and its environment: axis correspondence, polarity correspondence, tilt direction, and tilt magnitude. The goal of this research was to investigate whether these parameters are computed in parallel or serially and, if so, in which order. To do so, we co

Spectral-Adaptive Modulation Networks for Visual Perception.

Recent studies have shown that 2D convolution and self-attention exhibit distinct spectral behaviors, and optimizing their spectral properties can enhance vision model performance. However, theoretical analyses remain limited in explaining why 2D convolution is more effective in high-pass filtering than self-attention and why larger kernels favor shape bias, akin to self-attention. In this paper, we employ graph spectral analysis to theoretically simulate and compare the frequency responses of 2D convolution and self-attention within a unified framework. Our results corroborate previous empiri

Cortical representation of pitch perception in mice.

Pitch perception is fundamental to speech and music, yet the neural representation of pitch in auditory cortex remains poorly understood. We hypothesized that mice rely on temporal cues for pitch perception because of their wide auditory filters and high-frequency hearing. To investigate, we developed a mouse auditory filter bank model that estimates the temporal pitch salience of complex tones. We then trained mice to discriminate low vs. high fundamental frequencies (F0s) in complex tones and found that modeled temporal pitch salience was highly correlated with behavioral discrimination sens

Public Perception of Robot-Assisted Spine Surgery.

Background/Objectives: The potential advantages of robotic assistance in spinal procedures are a growing area of interest, and patient perception plays a key role in its broader acceptance. However, public perception of robotic surgery in spinal operations remains unexplored. This study aims to assess the general public's perceptions, expectations, and concerns regarding robot-assisted spine surgery. Methods: In the fall of 2024, a questionnaire was distributed to attendees at a public open day at the Neurocenter of Southern Switzerland, where the Globus ExcelsiusGPS™ spine surgery robot was d

Electronic Cigarette Perception in Baltimore High Schools.

BACKGROUND: Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use among adolescents is a growing public health concern, particularly in low-income and Black communities. However, little is known about how social determinants of health shape e-cigarette perceptions in this population. AIMS: This study examined social determinants associated with perceptions of e-cigarette safety among Baltimore high school students. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey (CEASE Youth: School Survey) was conducted with 604 Baltimore high school students aged 14-20. Participants completed a questionnaire assessing perceptions of e

Spectral peak picking improves tactile speech perception.

Individual differences in speech perception often arise from disparities in access to acoustic-phonetic cues, particularly among those with hearing loss. Haptic hearing aids, which convey speech information through the sense of touch, offer a complementary pathway to improve speech understanding. However, effectively transmitting critical speech features through vibrotactile stimulation remains challenging. To address this challenge, we introduce a tactile spectral peak picking (tSPP) approach, integrated into a vocoder-based audio-to-tactile conversion algorithm to enhance vibrotactile phoneme
