An Assessment of the Spatial and Temporal Variability of Biological Responses to Municipal Wastewater Effluent in Rainbow Darter (Etheostoma caeruleum) Collected along an Urban Gradient.

Municipal wastewater effluent (MWWE) and its constituents, such as chemicals of emerging concern, pose a potential threat to the sustainability of fish populations by disrupting key endocrine functions in aquatic organisms. While studies have demonstrated changes in biological markers of exposure of aquatic organisms to groups of chemicals of emerging concern, the variability of these markers over time has not been sufficiently described in wild fish species. The aim of this study was to assess the spatial and temporal variability of biological markers in response to MWWE exposure and to test

The protection afforded by the outer layer to procercoids of Schistocephalus solidus during passage through the stomach lumen of their vertebrate host (Gasterosteus aculeatus).

Intestinal cestodes with complex life cycles have to pass through the acid stomach lumen of their vertebrate host(s) in order to reach their preferred site of development. The cestode's tegument is the only organ in constant contact with this hostile environment. Procercoids of Schistocephalus solidus (order Diphyllobothriidea) lose their outer layer on passing through the acidic stomach of their second intermediate host (Gasterosteus aculeatus). We wanted to investigate if the outer layer is an adaptation that enables passage through this hostile environment. We used fish bile to force the pr

Live triatomine bug, vector of Trypanosoma cruzi , found engorged in Lisbon hotel room: A first for Portugal and for Europe.

Triatomine bugs are blood feeding insects that transmit the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, causative agent of Chagas disease. The bugs are found primarily in the Americas with a few species in Asia and Africa. Here, we report the first case of a live triatomine bug in Europe, found in a Lisbon hotel room. In August 2025 the hotel room occupants discovered a triatomine bug perched on the headboard of their bed. Upon capture, bright red blood emerged from the bug; the occupants suspected that it had bitten them during the night. The bug was identified morphologically as triatomine species Hospesneo

Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida: an integrated view of a bacterial fish pathogen.

Pasteurellosis, or pseudotuberculosis, is a bacterial septicaemia caused by the halophilic bacterium Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida (formerly Pasteurella piscicida). Although this disease was first described in wild populations of white perch and striped bass, currently the natural hosts of the pathogen are a wide variety of marine fish. The disease has great economic impact both in Japan, where it affects mainly yellowtail cultures, and in the Mediterranean area, due to the losses it causes in seabream and seabass farms. This microorganism serves as a perfect model to study a bacter

Entomopathogenic fungi in flies associated with pastured cattle in Denmark.

Cattle flies, including Musca autumnalis, Haematobia irritans, and Hydrotaea irritans, are pests of pastured cattle. A 2-year study of the natural occurrence of entomopathogenic fungi in adult cattle flies and other flies associated with pastures showed that the four species included in the Entomophthora muscae species complex (E. muscae sensu lato) caused high infection levels in several species of flies. However, only a few specimens of cattle flies were infected by E. muscae sensu stricto despite the fact that cattle flies were observed to perch on spear thistles, which acted as transmissio

Biomechanical and morphological determinants of maximal jumping performance in callitrichine monkeys.

Jumping is a crucial behavior in fitness-critical activities including locomotion, resource acquisition, courtship displays and predator avoidance. In primates, paleontological evidence suggests selection for enhanced jumping ability during their early evolution. However, our interpretation of the fossil record remains limited, as no studies have explicitly linked levels of jumping performance with interspecific skeletal variation. We used force platform analyses to generate biomechanical data on maximal jumping performance in three genera of callitrichine monkeys falling along a continuum of

Analysis of a complex vertical copulatory-courtship display in the yellow fever vector Sabethes chloropterus.

Sabethes chloropterus (Von Humboldt) (Diptera: Culicidae), an arboreal mosquito vector of the yellow fever virus, perches on vertical surfaces, where airborne males patrol for potential mates and mating occurs. Laboratory analysis of 26 virgin mating pairs partly confirms and greatly extends an earlier description suggesting that males perform a courtship ritual. A male approaches a female by hovering behind her, moving toward her from one side, reaching toward her and occasionally touching her with his closest midleg, and eventually seizing her wing with that midleg and inverting beneath her,

Temporal influence on foraging strategies, territoriality and nomadic tendencies of snail kite, Rosthramus sociabilis (Viellot, 1817) in an urban Neotropical wetland.

The foraging, territoriality and displacement of the Snail Kite were studied over 232 hours of observations in an urban lake during the dry and wet seasons. The temperature and rainfall variations were used to correlate with predation rates and the correlation coefficients were 0,39 and 0,34, respectively. Snail Kites spent more time foraging during the wet than the dry season when perching is more frequently recorded. The higher predation in the wet season can be explained by the higher abundance of apple snails and the energy demand for reproduction. In the wet season, the territories were s

Pathogen-induced rapid evolution in a vertebrate life-history trait.

Anthropogenic factors, including climate warming, are increasing the incidence and prevalence of infectious diseases worldwide. Infectious diseases caused by pathogenic parasites can have severe impacts on host survival, thereby altering the selection regime and inducing evolutionary responses in their hosts. Knowledge about such evolutionary consequences in natural populations is critical to mitigate potential ecological and economic effects. However, studies on pathogen-induced trait changes are scarce and the pace of evolutionary change is largely unknown, particularly in vertebrates. Here,

Vexillifera expectata sp. n. and other non-encysting amoebae isolated from organs of freshwater fish.

Four strains of non-encysting amoebae were isolated from organs of freshwater fishes and characterized using light and electron microscope. Morphology of three clonal strains was consistent with amoebae which had already been described from water habitats. Two strains, one isolated from kidney tissue of common goldfish, Carassius auratus (Linnaeus, 1758), and the second one from brain of chub, Leuciscus cephalus Linnaeus, 1758, were identified with Vannella platypodia (Gläser, 1912) Page, 1976. Both strains were identical, except for the length of glycostyles. The strain isolated from the live

Reduction of traumatic unilateral locked facet of the subaxial cervical spine: what predicts successful closed skeletal traction, and is anterior or posterior surgery superior after unsuccessful closed reduction?

OBJECTIVE: Closed skeletal traction (CST) to reduce unilateral locked facets in the subaxial cervical spine can expedite spinal realignment prior to definitive surgery but is not always successful. What predicts successful closed reduction is not completely understood. In addition, whether open anterior or posterior surgery is superior for achieving successful reduction after failed closed skeletal traction has not been investigated. The authors sought to assess predictors of successful closed reduction with skeletal traction and to compare the efficacy of anterior versus posterior surgery aft

Factors predicting mortality in hospitalised HIV-negative children with lower-chest-wall indrawing pneumonia and implications for management.

INTRODUCTION: In 2012, the World Health Organization revised treatment guidelines for childhood pneumonia with lower chest wall indrawing (LCWI) but no 'danger signs', to recommend home-based treatment. We analysed data from children hospitalized with LCWI pneumonia in the Pneumonia Etiology Research for Child Health (PERCH) study to identify sub-groups with high odds of mortality, who might continue to benefit from hospital management but may not be admitted by staff implementing the 2012 guidelines. We compare the proportion of deaths identified using the criteria in the 2012 guidelines, and

The influence of a submerged meadow on uptake and trophic transfer of legacy mercury from contaminated sediment in the food web in a brackish Norwegian fjord.

There are contradicting results on the importance of legacy mercury (Hg) contaminated sediments to Hg fish tissue concentrations. Still, sediment remediation actions often aim at minimizing ecosystem exposure and human risk caused by the consumption of fish and seafood. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible influence of a permanently submerged meadow on the availability and transfer of Hg from sediment to biota, three decades after the Hg discharges was halted and the previous biota survey was carried out, in the severely contaminated brackish fjord Gunneklevfjorden in southern

Whole organism responses and intersex severity in rainbow darter (Etheostoma caeruleum) following exposures to municipal wastewater in the Grand River basin, ON, Canada. Part A.

Municipal wastewater effluents (MWWEs) contain anthropogenic substances that can exhibit endocrine-disrupting activity. These complex mixtures have been observed to exert adverse effects on fish. Rainbow darter (Etheostoma caeruleum, RBD) is a small benthic fish that is widespread throughout the Grand River, Ontario, Canada, and has been previously shown to be adversely affected by MWWE exposure in this watershed. The objectives of this study were to quantify biological responses in this sentinel species and intersex severity in male fish, in relation to the area of urbanization. It focused on

Characterization and expression of a myosin heavy-chain isoform in juvenile walleye Sander vitreus.

In this study, myosin, the major component of myofibrillar protein in the skeletal muscle, was characterized and its expression was monitored during growth in juvenile walleye Sander vitreus. First, the coding region of myosin heavy chain (MyHC) from the fast skeletal muscle of walleye was amplified by long-distance PCR using a full-length cDNA. Phylogenetic analysis was used to determine the evolutionary relationship of this S. vitreus myosin sequence to other vertebrate myosin sequences. Next, it was established that the myosin isoform was most prevalent in the white muscle, compared with th

The Frog in Space (FRIS) experiment onboard Space Station Mir: final report and follow-on studies.

The "Frog in Space" (FRIS) experiment marked a major step for Japanese space life science, on the occasion of the first space flight of a Japanese cosmonaut. At the core of FRIS were six Japanese tree frogs, Hyla japonica, flown on Space Station Mir for 8 days in 1990. The behavior of these frogs was observed and recorded under microgravity. The frogs took up a "parachuting" posture when drifting in a free volume on Mir. When perched on surfaces, they typically sat with their heads bent backward. Such a peculiar posture, after long exposure to microgravity, is discussed in light of motion sick

The incidence of vertebral artery injury after midcervical spine fracture or subluxation.

Twenty-six patients with blunt trauma of the cervical spine, producing a subluxation from a "locked" or "perched" facet, facet destruction with evidence of instability, or a fracture involving the foramen transversarium, underwent preoperative vertebral angiography to determine the incidence of vertebral artery injury. The cervical spine injury in all the patients was deemed unstable and in need of surgical stabilization. Spinal cord injury was present in one-half of the patients studied. Vertebral artery injury was identified angiographically in 12 patients (46%). Occlusion of the vertebral a

Novel GABA responses from rod-driven retinal horizontal cells.

gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Two classes of GABA receptors (GABAA and GABAB) have been identified. GABAA receptors are ligand-gated chloride channels that are competitively antagonized by bicuculline, noncompetitively blocked by picrotoxin, and often allosterically modulated by barbiturates and benzodiazepines. GABAB receptors regulate potassium and calcium channels through G-protein and intracellular second-messenger pathways, are selectively activated by baclofen, and are antagonized by phaclofen and 2-hydroxysaclofen.
