Kinetic degradation of reactive dye RED 243 using potassium peroxymonosulfate with zero-valent iron particles.

The degradation of persistent organic pollutants reduces their harmful effects on the environment. Various treatment techniques are employed to remediate these pollutants, and among them, advanced oxidative processes are effective for breaking down recalcitrant compounds. This manuscript investigated the degradation of the dye RED 243 using PMS in combination with zero-valent iron particles of different sizes. The reduction in the dye's colorimetric intensity occurred rapidly, within a few seconds. The results indicated that the reduction in colorimetric intensity ranged from 62 to 83% by the

Immobilization of laccase on magnetic PEGDA-CS inverse opal hydrogel for enhancement of bisphenol A degradation in aqueous solution.

Endocrine disruptors such as bisphenol A (BPA) adversely affect the environment and human health. Laccases are used for the efficient biodegradation of various persistent organic pollutants in an environmentally safe manner. However, the direct application of free laccases is generally hindered by short enzyme lifetimes, non-reusability, and the high cost of a single use. In this study, laccases were immobilized on a novel magnetic three-dimensional poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA)-chitosan (CS) inverse opal hydrogel (LAC@MPEGDA@CS@IOH). The immobilized laccase showed significant impro

Polyacrylonitrile-derived functional carbon for selective degradation of electron-rich organic contaminants via persulfate activation.

Selective removal of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from aquatic environments remains challenging in conventional advanced oxidation processes due to the non-selective reactivity of radical species. Direct electron transfer (DET)-mediated persulfate activation is a promising approach for the selective removal of POPs. However, the sustainable synthesis of functionalized catalysts capable of strong persulfate adsorption and efficient interfacial electron transfer remains challenging. In this study, cobalt (Co)-incorporated polyacrylonitrile (PAN) was thermochemically treated under a CO2 a

Investigation of the sensing behavior of C4N3 for the detection of Benz[a]anthracene, chrysene, and chlorinated organic pollutants: A computational study.

Persistent organic compounds, also known as "forever chemicals", present serious risk to both the human and environmental health because of their enduring stability, bioaccumulation, and long-range mobility. This study evaluates the capability of C4N3 as a sensitive and selective detecting nanomaterial for the sensing of POPs, utilizing DFT (density functional theory). Adsorption energies of benz[a]anthracene (BA), chrysene (CR), 3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (TP), and 3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorodiphenyl ether (TD) on C4N3 were calculated, giving moderate values of -21.15, -7.0, -15.09, and -19.27 k

Mechanisms of micro- and nanoplastics on blood-brain barrier crossing and neurotoxicity: Current evidence and future perspectives.

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs), as emerging global pollutants, pose increasing threats to ecological environments and human health due to their widespread distribution and potential toxicity. Recent studies have demonstrated that MNPs not only enter the human body through multiple pathways but may also cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB), causing irreversible toxic damage to the central nervous system (CNS). This review summarizes the possible mechanisms of MNPs crossing the BBB, including the disruption of tight junctions and adherens juctions, paracellular transport, and endocytosis pathways

Toxic chemicals from uncontrolled e-waste recycling: Exposure, body burden, health impact.

Uncontrolled electronic-waste (e-waste) recycling processes have induced serious environmental pollution and human health impacts. This paper reviewed studies on the wide range of toxic chemicals through the use of primitive recycling techniques, their transfer to various ecological compartments, and subsequent health impacts. Results indicated that local food items were heavily polluted by the pollutants emitted, notably heavy metals in vegetables, rice, fish and seafood, and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in livestock. Dietary exposure is the most important exposure pathway. The associ

Prenatal exposure to environmental toxicants and their association with alterations in kidney development.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global public health problem whose susceptibility may originate during prenatal development. According to the developmental origins theory of health and disease, alterations during gestation can permanently affect kidney structure and function. The kidney is especially vulnerable during this period, as nephrogenesis occurs -exclusively before birth and determines the total nephron endowment. This review summarizes the epidemiological and experimental evidence linking prenatal exposure to environmental pollutants with alterations in kidney development. Heavy me

Assessment of neurotoxicity and oxidative stress induced by environmentally persistent pharmaceutical pollutants.

The study aimed to examine the possible impact of environmentally persistent pharmaceutical pollutants at environmentally relevant concentrations. Intriguingly, the Novel Tank Behavior Test did not reveal significant differences in anxiety-related behaviors. However, the Social Interaction Test unveiled a substantial reduction in social interaction, particularly notable in zebrafish treated with carbamazepine (CBZ). Furthermore, the Mirror Biting Behavior Test illustrated a complex picture, with CBZ inducing heightened aggression while Metformin (MET) treatment resulted in reduced aggression.

Spatial distribution characteristics of polycyclic musks as a chemical marker in river water and sediment compared with other typical pollutants.

Polycyclic musks (PMs), widely used in the cosmetic and perfume industries, are gaining attention as a new type of persistent organic pollutant (POP). The related contamination in developing countries, such as China, where the use of these compounds is increasing, needs to be closely monitored. This work systematically studied the distribution profile (water-suspended particulate-sediment-porewater) of PMs in Haihe River, China. The average concentrations of PMs were comparable to those of the traditional POPs. The typical PMs (galaxolide and tonalide) exhibited different environmental behavio

The relationship between levels of PCBs and pesticides in human hair and blood: preliminary result.

Human hair as a biologic measure of exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) has some advantages over the more commonly used blood and adipose tissue samples. However, one of the primary limitations is the difficulty in distinguishing between exogenous and endogenous contamination. In addition, there are currently no standardized methods for hair sample collection, washing, and chemical analysis. There is also very limited information describing the correlation between levels of organic contaminants in hair and other body compartments. To explore levels of POPs in blood and hair, sampl

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances Can Induce Immunotoxicity via Direct Intestinal Lymphatic Absorption.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent organic pollutants with immunotoxicity as a primary health concern. Their in vivo fate has long been interpreted within a blood-centric toxicokinetic framework, whereas the lymphatic system, a key immune surveillance hub, has been overlooked as an exposure compartment. Given their structural similarity to long-chain fatty acids, PFAS may be absorbed via intestinal lymphatics, directly exposing resident immune cells, a hypothesis never experimentally verified. Here, using rat models with mesenteric lymph duct and jugular vein cannulation

Sequential treatment of tannery wastewater using microalgae and microwave-prepared anodes.

The high concentration of heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants in tannery wastewater poses a serious threat to human health and environmental safety. These pollutants are difficult to remove through conventional treatment methods. This study investigates an alternative treatment approach that uses a sequential process that combines a biological stage with electrochemical treatment for improved efficiency. In the initial stage, a microalga isolated from local tannery effluent, identified as Chlorella sorokiniana, was used to remove heavy metals, achieving up to 78.43 % removal of chro

Tracing environmental contaminants in magellanic penguins: Legacy POPs and metabolic clearance of PAHs.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are widespread contaminants that bioaccumulate in the food web, posing risks to wildlife, especially top predators. This study investigates the occurrence of POPs in liver tissues of 23 Magellanic Penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) stranded along the Brazilian coast from June to September 2017. We analyzed concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (DDTs, Drins, mirex, endosulfans), and hexachlorobenzene (HCB). POPs were detected in all samples. PCBs and DDTs showed the highest concentrations, with PCBs ranging from < LOD

Multidrug efflux transporters limit accumulation of inorganic, but not organic, mercury in sea urchin embryos.

Mercuric compounds are persistent global pollutants that accumulate in marine organisms and in humans who consume them. While the chemical cycles and speciation of mercury in the oceans are relatively well described, the cellular mechanisms that govern which forms of mercury accumulate in cells and why they persist are less understood. In this study we examined the role of multidrug efflux transport in the differential accumulation of inorganic (HgCl(2)) and organic (CH(3)HgCl) mercury in sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus) embryos. We found that inhibition of MRP/ABCC-type transporters

Pesticides, soft-tissue sarcoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma--historical aspects on the precautionary principle in cancer prevention.

BACKGROUND: After the 2(nd) World War a long range of chemical agents have been introduced on the market, both in Sweden and most other countries. From the 1950's several pesticides gained increasing use in agriculture and forestry. In the 1970's public concern increased in Sweden especially regarding use of phenoxy herbicides to combat deciduous wood, although statements from different authorities were reassuring of the safety. MATERIALS AND METHODS: At the end of the 1970's the author and his colleagues published the first scientific evidence of an association between exposure to phenoxyace
