Development of computer-based environment for simulating the voluntary upper-limb movements of persons with disability.

Upper-limb orthotic systems have been designed for restoring the upper-limb functions of individuals with disabilities resulting from spinal cord injury (SCI), stroke and muscular dystrophy. These systems employ either functional electrical stimulation or external power. It is proposed that, instead of time-consuming and complicated monitoring using sensors and motion analysis, a software simulator with both angular displacement and acceleration parameters can facilitate the design of a control strategy for an orthosis. Reaching movements of three cervical SCI subjects are used to verify the s

The psychosocial impact of disability and stigma among persons affected by leprosy and lymphatic filariasis in India.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), such as leprosy and lymphatic filariasis (LF), can cause disabilities despite available treatment. Both diseases disproportionately affect India's poorest populations, with high numbers in Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh. Those affected experience severe psychosocial consequences, including participation restrictions, depression, and poor mental health. This study investigates the extent to which stigma affects social participation and mental wellbeing among persons with leprosy- and LF-related disabilities in two Indian states. In a cross-sectional design in Bo

Comparing remote versus in-person assessment of learning skills in children with specific learning disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Interactive telemedicine applications have been progressively introduced in the assessment of cognitive and literacy skills. However, there is still a lack of research focusing on the validity of this methodology for the neuropsychological assessment of children with Specific Learning Disorder (SLD). METHODS: Seventy-nine children including 40 typically developing children (18 males, age 11.5 ± 1.06) and 39 children with SLD (24 males, age 12.3 ± 1.28) were recruited. Each participant underwent the same neuropsychological battery assessing reading accuracy, speed, and comprehensio

Understanding the participation outcomes for persons with disability when partnered with assistance dogs: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Assistance dogs are trained to support persons living with disability and mitigate limitations that hinder their participation in everyday activities. Despite participation being a frequent challenge for people with disabilities, evidence linking assistance dog provision to improved participation outcomes is underdeveloped. This scoping review aimed to improve understanding by mapping the participation outcomes claimed in research on assistance dogs using the International Classification of Functioning (ICF), Disability and Health framework. METHODS: Using the Arksey and O'Malle

Personal factors understood through the Ecological-Enactive Model of Disability and implications for rehabilitation research.

The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) recognizes that disability arises from the interaction between an individual with a medical condition and the context in which they are embedded. Context in the ICF is comprised of environmental and personal factors. Personal factors, the background life and lifestyle of an individual, are poorly understood in rehabilitation. There is limited knowledge about how personal and environmental factors interact to shape the contextual conditions critical for explaining functioning and disability. In this paper, we explore h

The Shifting Risk of Homelessness among Persons with a Disability: Insights from a National Policy Intervention.

Persons with a disability are at a far higher risk of homelessness than those without. The economic, social and health challenges faced by disabled people are addressed, in Australia, by the recently implemented National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Using nationally representative, longitudinal household panel data, we construct the Index of Relative Homelessness Risk (IRHR) to track how the risk of homelessness for disabled persons has changed since the introduction of the NDIS. We find that, overall, fewer persons with a disability face moderate risk of homelessness but that many more

Sense of Coherence and the Association with Sociodemographics and Disability Related Factors in Persons with Late Effects of Polio.

BACKGROUND: Sense of Coherence (SOC) is important for successful adaptation in persons with life-long disabilities. A previous study has shown that persons with Late Effects of Polio (LEoP) have a level of SOC indicating that they generally have the ability to understand, handle, and have the motivation to deal with stressful events and problems arising in their lives. However, no study has explored the associations between SOC, sociodemographics, and disability-related factors in persons with LEoP. OBJECTIVE: To explore the associations between SOC, sociodemographics, and disability-related

Fatigue and physical fitness of mildly disabled persons with multiple sclerosis: a cross-sectional study.

Fatigue is frequent and disabling in persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) with mild neurological disability. These patients also have impaired physical fitness. Whether mildly disabled pwMS are deconditioned, and this deconditioning is linked to fatigue, remains unknown. Our aim is to determine the physical fitness of mildly disabled patients with multiple sclerosis and study its relationship with perceived fatigue and to link perceived fatigue with other parameters. Twenty patients (14 women; mean age: 45.5 years) with mild disability (Expanded Disability Status Scale 0-4) underwent a 2-min

[What Psychiatrists Should Know about the Medical Documentation They Issue: Admission for Medical Care and Protection, Medical Treatment for Persons with Disabilities, Mental Health Disability Certification, etc].

Psychiatrists issue a wide variety of documentation, among which are torms such as Registration of Admission for Medical Care and Protection, Periodic Report of Condition, Certification of Medical Treatment for Persons with Disabilities, and Mental Health Disability Certification, which are required under laws such as the Act on Mental Health and Welfare for the Mentally Disabled. These documents are important in that they are related to protecting the human rights of people with mental disorders, as well as securing appropriate medical and welfare services for them. However, in the course of

Laterality in persons with intellectual disability. I--do patients with trisomy 21 and Williams-Beuren syndrome differ from typically developing persons?

Persons with trisomy 21 (T21) and Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) have different brain abnormalities which may affect manual laterality. We assessed 45 persons with T21 and 34 with WBS (mean age 13) and 81 typically developing children (TD). Manual laterality was assessed with a fifteen-item task administered two times, and Bishop's card-reaching task. We found more left-handers in the T21 group compared to the other two groups. Inconsistent laterality was higher in the two groups with genetic diseases than in the TD group. For Bishop's test, both T21 and WBS participants were less right-orient

Is there a sexual difference in the relationship between sociodemographic information and the unmet dental care needs of disabled adults? An analysis from a national survey on persons with disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Health status and health care utilization in people with disabilities are more likely to be poorer than those without disabilities. Previous studies showed that there were gaps in health-related conditions by sociodemographic information and gender but the association between these factors was not explained. This study aims to analyze the relationship between sociodemographic information and the unmet dental care needs of people with disabilities and explore the effect of sex within this relationship. METHODS: The 2014 national survey on persons with disabilities was used, which s
