Transition to retirement: The lived experiences of adults with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Adults with intellectual disabilities are living longer and experiencing retirement. However, research about retirement experiences is limited. METHOD: This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews with 10 retired/retiring U.S. adults with intellectual disabilities and an ally of their choice. RESULTS: Participants described factors that pushed or pulled them into retirement, such as health issues or wanting to spend more time with family. Individuals in community work settings described greater self-determination in their decision to retire. Regardless of reasons for re

Prevalence and incidence of health problems in people with intellectual disability.

The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and incidence of the most frequent chronic health problems in relation to age in people with intellectual disabilities living in residential facilities in the Netherlands. A prospective cohort study was done with four data collections, each with an interval of one year. Data were collected by means of questionnaires which were completed by each person's physician. Striking results included the reported high prevalence and incidence of visual and hearing impairment, which was even more pronounced in people with Down's syndrome than in

Psychoeducational assessment of students with intellectual disability: professional-action framework analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD) is a distinct type of SNHL that is characterized by the presence of otoacoustic emissions and/or cochlear microphonics. Cochlear implantation was initially not recommended for ANSD children, later studies showed variable outcomes among ANSD. CI is currently the intervention option of choice for many children with ANSD who are unable to obtain benefit from conventional amplification. AIM AND OBJECTIVES: To review experiences with some of the preoperative and postoperative findings in a child who was diagnosed with auditory neuropathy a

Perceptions of self-determination by special education and rehabilitation practitioners based on viewing a self-directed IEP versus an external-directed IEP meeting.

This study investigated perception of self-determination by special education and rehabilitation practitioners following their exposure to a videotaped simulation of a self-directed IEP meeting and an external-directed IEP meeting involving an adolescent with mild mental retardation. Groups of special education practitioners and rehabilitation practitioners did not differ from each other in their perceptions of self-determination before or after viewing either the self-directed or external-directed IEP meeting simulation. However, both groups of respondents had higher perceptions of the self-d

Effectiveness of video displays versus traditional flashcards for global word learning in students with moderate-severe cognitive disabilities.

Literacy is crucial for developing communication competence in students with complex communication needs (CCN). Existing technologies often inadequately support literacy strategies for these children. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is a promising approach, and video visual scene display (VVSD) has emerged as a motivational feature for AAC intervention. This study examined the effectiveness of Smart-Glove, which combines VVSD and flashcards to teach global words to Hebrew-speaking students with moderate-severe intellectual disabilities (ID) and CCN. Using an adapted alternatin

Sexuality in subjects with intellectual disability: an educational intervention proposal for parents and counselors in developing countries.

In developing countries, the study of intellectual disability has enormous knowledge gaps, especially in the areas of intervention, utilization of services and legislation. This article provides information not only for aiding in the potential development of sexuality in individuals with intellectual disability, but also for fostering their social integration. In Mexico and the region, in order to develop educational interventions for promoting sexual health, it is necessary to consider the following priorities: a) mental health professionals should have the knowledge or receive training for c

An exploration of clinical psychology's response to parental bereavement in adults with intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: The dearth of literature regarding how or when to intervene when an adult with intellectual disability is bereaved may impede clinical practice; this study therefore aimed to explore the current clinical psychology response, so as to enhance understanding of the role of the profession in supporting grief within this population. METHOD: A collective case study design was used. Data for six persons with intellectual disability, including interviews with parentally bereaved persons and involved staff members, were integrated into individual case stories for cross-case synthesis. Solomon Judges Medea: Experiences of Mothers With Intellectual Disabilities Whose Children Were Removed.

BACKGROUND: This paper explores experiences of mothers with intellectual disabilities, with an emphasis on oppressive circumstances and stereotypes that contribute to poorer antenatal and social outcomes for mothers and their children, potentially leading to child removal. Drawing parallels to archetypical figures of Solomon and Medea, we explore how society treats these mothers differently. The research question is: what social, institutional, and personal circumstances lead to the loss of parental rights for mothers with intellectual disabilities? METHOD: We conducted a small qualitative st

Adapting a virtual manipulative-based instructional sequence to target maintenance.

The ability to maintain mathematical skills learned is critical for students to successfully engage in advanced mathematics and promote independence in daily living skills. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a graduated manipulative sequence consisting of virtual, representational, abstract, and an extended abstract phase (VRAEa) to teach various types of mathematical problems to three students with autism and mild intellectual disability using a multiple probe across behavior single case design. This study extended previous research on the virtual, representational

Day to day care of Rett syndrome children.

Girls with Rett syndrome are profoundly handicapped and are incapable of an independent life. The basic living skills of feeding, toileting, dressing, mobilising and communication are examined and advice as to how these girls can best be helped in these areas is suggested. The changing impact of the diagnosis on parents, as the condition becomes more widely know, is mentioned, and the physicians' attention is directed to the parental and family stresses caused through the presence of a profoundly handicapped child in a family so that he or she may be careful in not adding to this stress by mak

Olfactive short-term habituation in children and young people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Despite its importance for learning, the existence of the habituation process and its characteristics in people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD) remains understudied. Habituation is, however, considered the simplest form of learning, and a significant neuroadaptive mechanism. Even though habituation occurs in all sensory modalities, the olfactory system is where it manifests itself very visibly. AIM: This study explores the olfactory short-term habituation abilities of children and young people with PIMD. METHOD: Twenty children and young people with PI

Smoking cessation interventions for U.S. adults with disabilities: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: People with disabilities disproportionately use tobacco products. However, little is known about cessation interventions tailored for people with disabilities. The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review of smoking cessation interventions for adults with disabilities. METHODS: Six electronic databases (Cochrane, CINAHL Plus [EBSCOhost], Embase [Ovid], Medline [Ovid], PsycINFO [Ovid], and Web of Science) were searched to identify eligible interventions for people with disabilities (e.g., vision, hearing, mobility, communication, cognition, self-care) through Ju

An integrated practical placement programme for students with disability: A pilot study.

Supported work internship programmes for young adults with disability are an evidence-based model, leading to greater employment outcomes. This mixed methods pilot study evaluated the experiences of students, supervisors and a project coordinator, who participated in an Integrated Practical Placement (IPP) programme for students with disability in Australia. Intervention students (n = 10) completed 3, 9-week rotations, and accessed personal placement support and employment coaches. Comparison students (n = 38) completed 3, 2-week placements without additional support. Intervention students per

Elevating Equity and Inclusion for People With Intellectual Disabilities: A Nursing Student Sexual Health Promotion Project.

Organic solvents can cause hearing loss themselves or promote noise-induced hearing loss. The objective of this study was to review the literature on the effects of low-level exposure to trichloroethylene on the auditory system and consider its relevance for the occupational settings. Both human and animal investigations were evaluated only for realistic exposure concentrations based on the Quebec permissible exposure limits: 50 ppm 8-h time-weighed average exposure value (TWAEV) and 200 ppm short-term exposure value (STEV). In humans, the upper limit for considering ototoxicity data relevant

Prognostic factors of infantile spasms from the etiological viewpoint.

We investigated the prognostic factors for mental and physical development and seizure control by dividing the subjects into various etiologic groups in 200 patients with infantile spasms, all of whom (except 48 who died) were aged six years or older. The results were as follows: 1) Intermediate (4-12 mos) onset was found to be a favorable prognostic factor for seizure control in cryptogenic cases, although there was no relation between the age of onset and prognosis in other etiologic groups. 2) There was a significant correlation between the treatment lag and long-term prognosis for mental a
