BACKGROUND: Phobic anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent psychiatric disorders and are burdensome in terms of loss of quality of life and work productivity. Evidence-based treatments are relatively successful in the majority of patients, especially exposure therapy. However, a substantial subset of patients fails to achieve or stay in remission. Preclinical and genetic research have yielded evidence that the cannabinoid system is involved in the extinction of fear, presumed to underlie the beneficial effects of exposure therapy in phobic disorders. A cannabinoid constituent that may e

Nervous-psychic status by criteria of the V. P. Serbsky Center of Mental Health (Moscow) was assessed in 107 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (n = 54), osteoarthritis deformans (n = 35), gout (n = 11), ankylosing spondyloarthritis (n = 7). Autonomic and psychosomatic, asthenic, affective, hypochondriac, phobic, hysteric disorders were detected in 24.3, 15.9, 8.4, 7.5, 4.6 and 2.8% of examinees, respectively. These disorders correlated with the form and duration of the underlying disease, age of the patients, severity of anemia and joint dysfunction. Such social factors as invalidity, family

The point prevalence of phobic anxiety disorders was determined in 107 asthmatic outpatients through a standardized psychiatric interview and DSM-III-R diagnostic criteria. Agoraphobia and panic disorder were more prevalent (13.1% and 6.5%, respectively) than in the general population. Contributing factors and the clinical implications of this association are discussed. The recognition of specific anxiety syndromes enhances the efficacy of the treatment of anxious asthmatic patients.

This study investigated threat-related attention biases using a new visual search paradigm with eye tracking, which allows for measuring attentional disengagement in isolation. This is crucial as previous studies have been unable to distinguish between engagement, disengagement, and behavioral freezing. Thirty-three participants (Mage = 28.75 years, SD = 8.98; 21 women) with self-reported specific phobia (spiders, snakes, and pointed objects) and their matched controls (Mage = 28.38 years, SD = 8.66; 21 women) took part in the experiment. The participants were instructed to initially focus on

Anxiety is common in children with ASD; however, the burden of specific anxiety disorders for adults with ASD is under-researched. Using the Stockholm Youth Cohort, we compared anxiety disorder diagnoses among autistic adults (n = 4049), with or without intellectual disability, and population controls (n = 217,645). We conducted additional sibling analyses. Anxiety disorders were diagnosed in 20.1% of adults with ASD compared with 8.7% of controls (RR = 2.62 [95% CI 2.47-2.79]), with greatest risk for autistic people without intellectual disability. Rates of almost all individual anxiety disor

Biased processing of threat-relevant information is a central construct among contemporary theories of anxiety. However, biases in attentional and memory processes have not been systematically investigated in blood-injection-injury (BII) phobia. Theory has suggested that disgust rather than fear characterizes BII phobia and may mediate processing biases differently. We investigated the effects of a disgust mood induction on attention and memory in BII phobic and nonphobic participants. The Stroop task failed to demonstrate an attentional bias toward medical and disgust words, even under condit

The Fear Survey Schedule (FSS) has been widely used in clinical settings for the assessment of anxiety disorders yet its reliability and validity is still in doubt. This paper reports the factor structure and the validity of the FSS using 130 agoraphobics with panic attacks, 98 phobics and 108 non-patient controls. The results show that a clear 6-factor solution can be derived from the FSS and this accounts for 46% of the variance. The 6 factors are (1) agoraphobia, (2) fear of small animals, (3) social anxiety, (4) negative social evaluation fears, (5) fear of bodily harm and (6) injury and f

BACKGROUND: The current US official position, since DSM-III, is that panic attacks represent the hallmark of panic disorder and play a major role in the development of the agoraphobic syndrome. The more favoured view in the European tradition is that neurotic personality and/or prodromal features such as mild depression and excessive worries precede the illness.
METHOD: We studied 126 consecutive cases of panic disorder with or without agoraphobia by DSM-III-R criteria, evaluated by relevant structured and semi-structured interviews.
RESULTS: We provide evidence that characterological and pr

The current investigation focused on attentional processes in spider phobia. Twenty phobics and 20 controls performed a dot-probe task while event-related potentials were recorded. In each trial they viewed a picture pair (a spider or a generally disgust eliciting picture that was paired with a neutral picture) for either 100 or 1500 ms. After the offset a visual probe (a dot) was presented either at the previous position of the emotionally relevant or the neutral slide and participants were asked to indicate with a button press whether the dot had been presented on the left or the right side

OBJECTIVE: We examined the existence of nonfat-phobic anorexia nervosa (NFP-AN) and fat-phobic AN, with no evidence of distortions related to body shape and weight (AN-NED), in a Japanese sample and studied eating disorder pathology and psychopathology in NFP-AN and AN-NED.
METHOD: The study participants were 200 (52.2%) women with typical AN, 86 (22.5%) women with NFP-AN, and 97 (25.3%) women with AN-NED. Diagnosis of the three types of AN was made by structured clinical interviews. The Eating Attitudes Test (EAT) and the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI) were administered to all the participa

BACKGROUND: Understanding and improving outcomes for people with anxiety or depression often requires large sample sizes. To increase participation and reduce costs, such research is typically unable to utilise "gold-standard" methods to ascertain diagnoses, instead relying on remote, self-report measures.
AIMS: Assess the comparability of remote diagnostic methods for anxiety and depression disorders commonly used in research.
METHOD: Participants from the UK-based GLAD and COPING NBR cohorts (N = 58,400) completed an online questionnaire between 2018 and 2020. Responses to detailed symptom

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Survivors of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) often develop psychiatric and epilepsy problems. When arrest occurs with trauma, hypoxic-ischemic, and injury-related insults may heighten risks vs. nontraumatic OHCA.
OBJECTIVES: To estimate 5-year risks of psychiatric disorders and epilepsy after traumatic vs. nontraumatic OHCA, and to examine whether early pharmacologic treatment relates to outcomes.
DESIGN, SETTINGS, AND PARTICIPANTS: Retrospective cohort using deidentified records from the TriNetX U.S. Collaborative Network (January 2010-June 2023). Adults wit

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of implementing anxiety disorders guidelines on guideline adherence and patient outcomes in specialized mental health care.
METHOD: A treatment setting in which guidelines were implemented (intervention condition) was compared with one in which guidelines were only disseminated (control condition).
RESULTS: Of 61.7% of 81 intervention-condition patients received treatment according to the guidelines vs. 40.6% of 69 control-condition patients (P = 0.01). At 1-year follow-up, intervention-condition patients showed a greater decrease in anxiety symptoms (d = 0.4

OBJECTIVE: Methadone maintenance outcome as a function of detoxification phobia was examined.
METHOD: Opiate addicts (N = 271) in a 1983 random sample of methadone maintenance patients from three diverse populations were studied. Subjects from an individually assessed follow-up sample (N = 102) were compared on detoxification phobia. Logistic regression analysis yielded best predictors of the phobia.
RESULTS: Phobic patients were more likely to be white, female, and abstinent; to have had fewer detoxification attempts and longer periods on maintenance; to show persistence of the phobia; to m

Paruresis manifests in an inability to urinate in public restrooms followed by a considerable avoidance behavior. According to DSM-IV TR this disorder is classified as social phobia. A sample of N = 226 subjects completed different questionnaires concerning paruresis, social phobic symptoms, lower urinary tract symptoms and depressive symptoms. These individuals were divided into four groups: no symptoms, suffering primarily from paruresis, non-generalized social phobia and generalized social phobia. The paruretic group differs significantly in all symptom variables from both the non-generaliz

This study was meant to investigate the psychometric properties and clinical utility of the Lehrer Woolfolk Anxiety Symptom Questionnaire (LWASQ), an instrument for assessment of somatic, behavioral and cognitive aspects of anxiety. Confirmatory factor analysis on data from social phobics (n = 108), normal adults (n = 103) and normal adolescents (n = 650) showed that the three original factors were strongly replicated in each sample. The three subscales appeared to have high internal consistency, while data on convergent and divergent validity were satisfactory. In addition, the subscales did

We have seen six patients, over the past two years, who had developed intense fear of standing or walking as a result of accidental falls. None of these patients showed any evidence of neuromuscular impairment that might account for their inability to walk. However, the results of psychological evaluations of all these patients revealed high degrees of focal anxiety that was phobic in nature and related to standing or walking. Personality assessments of these patients showed little or no evidence of psychopathology of a generalized nature or of personality trait disturbance. The phobic reactio

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Specific phobias are prevalent and often disabling anxiety disorders. The present review examines relevant investigations that have been published during the last 2 years on major aspects of this group of disorders.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies have come mainly from epidemiology, brain imagery and cognitive-behavioral therapy, including virtual reality exposure therapy.
SUMMARY: Studies published in the last 2 years confirm the high prevalence of specific phobias in the general population and provide new insights into the mechanisms underlying the fear reaction after ex

Using the clinico-catamnestic method the authors examined residual neurotic states in 36 patients with a history of obsessional neurosis. The residual neurotic disorders manifested psychopathologically in the form of isolated rudiments of the obsessive-phobic syndrome combined frequently with some effaced vegetative, asthenic, and affective disturbances. Despite their inertness and many-year persistence the residual neurotic disorders showed a tendency to subsidence. Clinical differentiation between the residual states on the one hand, and neurotic development, slowly-progressing schizophrenia
