Perceived auditory dynamic range is enhanced with wrist-based tactile stimulation.

Tactile stimulation has been shown to increase auditory loudness judgments in listeners. This bias could be utilized to enhance perception for people with deficiencies in auditory intensity perception, such as cochlear implant users. However, several aspects of this enhancement remain uncertain. For instance, does the tactile stimulation need to be applied to the hand or body, or can it be applied to the wrist? Furthermore, can the tactile stimulation both amplify and attenuate the perceived auditory loudness? To address these questions, two loudness-matching experiments were conducted. Partic

Analgesic dorsal root ganglionic field stimulation blocks conduction of afferent impulse trains selectively in nociceptive sensory afferents.

Increased excitability of primary sensory neurons after peripheral nerve injury may cause hyperalgesia and allodynia. Dorsal root ganglion field stimulation (GFS) is effective in relieving clinical pain associated with nerve injury and neuropathic pain in animal models. However, its mechanism has not been determined. We examined effects of GFS on transmission of action potentials (APs) from the peripheral to central processes by in vivo single-unit recording from lumbar dorsal roots in sham injured rats and rats with tibial nerve injury (TNI) in fiber types defined by conduction velocity. Noninvasive Ultrasonic Neuromodulation in Freely Moving Mice.

Neuromodulation is a fundamental method for obtaining basic information about neuronal circuits for use in treatments for neurological and psychiatric disorders. Ultrasound stimulation has become a promising approach for noninvasively inducing neuromodulation in animals and humans. However, the previous investigations were subject to substantial limitations, due to most of them involving anesthetized and fixed small-animal models. Studies of awake and freely moving animals are needed, but the currently used ultrasound devices are too bulky to be applied to a freely moving animal. This study is

Representation of the body by single neurons in the dorsolateral striatum of the awake, unrestrained rat.

Single cell recordings in awake monkeys and cats have demonstrated that individual body parts are represented within striatal subregions receiving projections from somatic sensorimotor cortex. Literature indicating that the lateral striatum of the rat receives similar cortical inputs and subserves sensorimotor functions prompted a study of whether this subregion contains similar representations of the body. Single cell recordings were obtained from 923 neurons of 24 awake, unrestrained rats. Of 788 neurons categorized according to body part, 264 (34%) discharged in relation to active movement,

Touch Helps Hearing: Evidence From Continuous Audio-Tactile Stimulation.

OBJECTIVES: Identifying target sounds in challenging environments is crucial for daily experiences. It is important to note that it can be enhanced by nonauditory stimuli, for example, through lip-reading in an ongoing conversation. However, how tactile stimuli affect auditory processing is still relatively unclear. Recent studies have shown that brief tactile stimuli can reliably facilitate auditory perception, while studies using longer-lasting audio-tactile stimulation yielded conflicting results. This study aimed to investigate the impact of ongoing pulsating tactile stimulation on basic a

Nonpharmacological, somatic treatments of depression: electroconvulsive therapy and novel brain stimulation modalities.

Until recently, a review of nonpharmacological, somatic treatments of psychiatric disorders would have included only electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). This situation is now changing very substantially. Although ECT remains the only modality in widespread clinical use, several new techniques are under investigation. Their principal indication in the psychiatric context is the treatment of major depression, but other applications are also being studied. All the novel treatments involve brain stimulation, which is achieved by different technological methods. The treatment closest to the threshold

Stimulus-induced drop episodes in Coffin-Lowry syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Coffin-Lowry syndrome (CLS) is a rare disorder characterized by moderate to severe mental retardation, facial dysmorphism, tapering digits, and skeletal deformity. Paroxysmal drop attacks occur in patients with CLS, characterized by sudden loss of muscle tone induced by unexpected tactile or auditory stimuli. Our objective is to characterize these attacks better using neurophysiologic studies. METHODS: We report 2 teenage boys with CLS and stimulus-induced drop episodes (SIDEs). Simultaneous surface electromyogram (EMG) and video electroencephalogram were performed during SIDEs on

Opioidergic inhibition of flexor and extensor reflexes in the rabbit.

1. Recordings were made from gastrocnemius medialis (GM), semitendinosus (ST) and tibialis anterior/extensor digitorum longus (TA/EDL) motor nerves during mechanical and electrical stimulation of the skin of the foot in decerebrated and spinalized rabbits. 2. GM motoneurones were excited from the heel and not from the toes, whereas TA/EDL responded to stimulation at the toes but not at the heel. ST also responded to electrical and mechanical stimulation at the toes, but there was a disparity between the effects of the two types of stimuli when they were applied at the heel: ST motoneurones fir

[Reflex reaction in the abductor pollicis brevis muscle after mechanical and electrical stimulation in patients with central hemiparesis and Parkinsonism. Electromyographic study].

The reflex responses in the abductor pollicis brevis muscle were examined in 22 patients with mild central hemiparesis and in nine patients with Parkinson's disease. In the group of patients with central hemiparesis there were 15 subjects with a spastic and seven subjects with a flaccid type of affection. The reflex responses in the abductor pollicis brevis muscle were evoked during isometric contraction. The recorded muscular potentials were unidirectionally rectified and averaged. The reflex responses were then identified as excitatory and inhibitory modulations of basal activity of the musc

Inhibition of jaw-closing muscle activity by tactile air-jet stimulation of peri- and intra-oral sites in man.

There were two distinct periods of suppression in electromyograms of masseter and temporalis muscles in 8 subjects after light tactile stimulation (a puff of air) of the peri-oral zone; the latencies were 16 and 60 ms, respectively. These effects were similar to those induced by painful electrical stimulation. A single period of suppression with a latency of 50 ms, was evoked by tactile stimulation of the mucosa of the hard palate or of the tongue. Threshold for suppression was lower in mucosa than skin. Low-threshold and fast-adapting receptors are likely to be involved in this reflex inhibit

Physiological Properties of neurons in different parts of the cat trigeminal sensory complex.

The following points emerge from a systematic investigation of the 4 divisions of the cat trigeminal sensory complex. (1) The subnucleus oralis receives a large representation from the oral cavity, a region also represented in the 3 other divisions of the trigeminal sensory complex. (2) Nucleus principalis cells project heavily to the contralateral and to the ipsilateral ventroposterior thalamus. Ipsilateral projections are only from the oral cavity representation. (3) Units responding to noxious mechanical stimulation have been found at two different loci: the subnucleus caudalis for the enti

[Cerebral Function Monitor and responses to stimuli].

Sudden changes in cerebral activity occurring in response to controlled stimuli or resulting from surgery were recorded with the Monitor of Cerebral Function in an appreciable number of cases. The fluctuations in activity that were observed lasted for various lengths of time and consisted mainly of an elevation of the trace associated with cortical excitation. These fluctuations occurred in various different clinical situations such as under general anaesthesia or under er the effect of barbiturate poisoning. Once we eliminate the possibility that the fluctuations are simply recording artiefac

Sleep Quality, Depression, and Quality of Life After Bilateral Anodal Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in Patients with Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND Sleep dysfunctions impose a large burden on quality of life for patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Several studies on PD reported potential therapeutic effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on motor and non-motor functions, but not related to sleep quality. Therefore, the present study examined sleep quality, depression perception, and quality of life changes after bilateral anodal tDCS in patients with PD. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-one patients (n=21) with PD underwent 10 sessions (20 min each, 5 per week) of bilateral anodal tDCS stimulation applied simu

[Novel brain stimulation techniques: therapeutic perspectives in psychiatry].

Recent advances have allowed the development of new physical techniques in neurology and psychiatry, such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS), and Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). These techniques are already recognized as therapeutic approaches in several late stage refractory neurological disorders (Parkinson's disease, tremor, epilepsy), and currently investigated in psychiatric conditions, refractory to medical treatment (obsessive-compulsive disorder, resistant major depression). In Paralell, these new techniques offer a new window to understand the neur

A comprehensive review of the psychological effects of brainwave entrainment.

OBJECTIVE: Brainwave entrainment (BWE), which uses rhythmic stimuli to alter brainwave frequency and thus brain states, has been investigated and used since the late 1800s, yet many clinicians and scientists are unaware of its existence. We aim to raise awareness and discuss its potential by presenting a systematic review of the literature from peer-reviewed journals on the psychological effects of BWE. DATA SOURCES: Terms used to describe BWE and psychological outcomes were used to search English language studies from OVID Medline (1950-2007), PsychInfo (1806-2007), and Scopus. STUDY SELECT

Reduction of cerebral oxidative stress following environmental enrichment in mice with Alzheimer-like pathology.

Oxidative stress is a key feature during progression of chronic neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease. In aging humans and animals, voluntary exercise lowers oxidative stress reactions. Additionally, recent work in our lab demonstrated that cognitive and physical stimulation (termed environmental enrichment) counteracts amyloid beta pathology, neurovascular dysfunction and behavioral symptoms in mice with Alzheimer-like disease. Based on these facts, we hypothesized that cognitive and physical activity can also protect against oxidative stress in Alzheimer-diseased brain. We

Vibration tailored to jawbone density with near-infrared light expedites orthodontic tooth movement.

Malocclusion, a prevalent oral health issue, requires prolonged orthodontic treatment due to inefficiency of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). Non-invasive physical stimulation has been increasingly applied to accelerate OTM. This study investigated how age-related variations in jawbone density affect the efficacy of vibration and near-infrared (NIR) light in accelerating OTM. Human computed tomography (CT) data and rat models revealed higher jawbone density in young adults than in adolescents. A ten-channel vibration-light integrated platform (VLIP) was developed to precisely control the stim
