[Contribution of simulated nitrogen deposition to forest soil acidification in area with high sulfur deposition].

The impacts of nitrogen deposition on a typical acidified soil under a masson pine (Pinus massoniana) forest at Tieshanping, Chongqing in Southwest China was studied through field experiments. The changes of soil water chemistry in different layers within one year after the spray of NH4NO3 and NaNO3 solution respectively [with the same nitrogen dose of 40 kg x (hm2 x a)(-1)] indicated that although the pH value decreased a little (treated by NH4NO3) or even increased somewhat (treated by NaNO3), the concentration of base cations, i.e. Ca2+ and Mg2+, and Al3+ increased remarkably, with the Al3+

Dendroremediation of trinitrotoluene (TNT). Part 1: Literature overview and research concept.

BACKGROUND, AIM AND SCOPE: For decades, very large areas of former military sites have been contaminated diffusely with the persistent nitroaromatic explosive 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). The recalcitrance of the environmental hazard TNT is to a great extent due to its particulate soil existence, which leads to slow but continuous leaching processes. Although improper handling during the manufacture of TNT seems to be a problem of the past in developed countries, environmental deposition of TNT and other explosives is still going on unfortunately, resulting from thousands of unexploded ordnanc

Pycnogenol ameliorates depression-like behavior in repeated corticosterone-induced depression mice model.

Oxidative stress is considered to be a mechanism of major depression. Pycnogenol (PYC) is a natural plant extract from the bark of Pinus pinaster Aiton and has potent antioxidant activities. We studied the ameliorative effect of PYC on depression-like behavior in chronic corticosterone- (CORT-) treated mice for 20 days. After the end of the CORT treatment period, PYC (0.2 mg/mL) was orally administered in normal drinking water. Depression-like behavior was investigated by the forced swimming test. Immobility time was significantly longer by CORT exposure. When the CORT-treated mice were supple

Synergistic Effects of Rotenone and Abamectin on Physiological Suppression, Population Inhibition, and Ion Disruption of Bursaphelenchus xylophilus.

Pine wilt disease, which is induced by pine wood nematode (PWN, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus), has caused huge economic and ecological losses. To overcome the drawbacks of chemical control against PWN, twenty compounds were screened, and a synergistic botanical-chemical combination was identified. A proportion of abamectin to rotenone of 7:3 (5.73 and 1.78 mg/L, respectively) achieved the highest co-toxicity coefficient of 231.09 with a median lethal concentration of 3.18 mg/L. It revealed 0% mortality in Pinus massoniana seedlings at 60 days post-treatment when applied at 400 times the synergis

In silico analysis of koranimine, a cyclic imine compound from Peribacillus frigoritolerans reveals potential nematicidal activity.

Pine wilt disease (PWD) is a destructive vector-borne forest disease caused by the nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus. To date, several options are available for the management of pine wilt disease; however constant development and search for natural products with potential nematicidal activity are imperative to diversify management options and to cope with the possible future emergence of resistance in parasitic nematodes. Here, a combined metabolomics and genomics approach was employed to investigate the chemical repertoire and biosynthetic potential of the bacterial endophyte Peribacillus

Investigation of the biochemical controls on mercury uptake and mobility in trees.

Atmospheric elemental mercury (Hg(0)) enters plant stomata, becomes oxidized, and is then transferred to annual growth rings providing an archive of air Hg(0) concentrations. To better understand the processes of Hg accumulation and translocation, the foliage of quaking aspen and Austrian pine were exposed to Hg(0), and methylmercury (MeHg) or Me198Hg via roots, in controlled exposures during the summer. Isotopic measurements demonstrated, in a laboratory setting, that the natural mass-dependent fractionation observed was the same as that measured in field studies, with the lighter isotopes be

Phytotoxicity of short-term exposure to excess zinc or copper in Scots pine seedlings in relation to growth, water status, nutrient balance, and antioxidative activity.

The toxic effects of heavy metals pose a significant threat to the productivity and stability of forest ecosystems. Changes in the agrochemical properties of polluted forest soils due to global climate changes can increase the bioavailability of previously immobilized heavy metals. To test this hypothesis, we studied the effects of short-term shock exposure to ZnSO4 (50, 150, 300 μM) or CuSO4 (2.5, 5, 10 μM) in hydroculture on 4- to 6-week-old seedlings of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) with well-developed root systems. The effects of the excess heavy metals on mineral nutrients and the func

Biological invasions Erode China's forest carbon stocks: Spatiotemporal expansion and edge preferences of Pine Wilt Disease.

Pine Wilt Disease (PWD), a devastating epidemic, poses a severe threat to the carbon sink function and stability of China's forest ecosystems. However, accurate long-term quantification of carbon loss remains challenging due to historical data gaps and scale mismatches between macro-statistics and micro-ecological processes. To accurately quantify the forest carbon loss caused by PWD, this study integrates multi-source remote sensing products with national monitoring data across China. Methodologically, we proposed an innovative ensemble learning-based "stand-to-tree" scale conversion strategy

A neprilysin effector from the pinewood nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus targets pine caffeic acid O-methyltransferase and inhibits lignin biosynthesis.

BACKGROUND: Pine wilt disease caused by Bursaphelenchus xylophilus can devastate the pine forest ecosystem. Lignification is a vital strategy to help hosts resist pathogens, but how B. xylophilus effectors regulate the lignin biosynthesis of pine trees are unknown. RESULTS: In this study, we identified a B. xylophilus neprilysin effector BxNEP1, which rose in the three B. xylophilus transcriptomes of different infection stages. We demonstrated that BxNEP1 is required for B. xylophilus reproduction and virulence during parasitic stages. Silencing of the BxNEP1 gene resulted in the upregulation

Botanical origin discrimination of Greek honeys: physicochemical parameters versus Raman spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: The authenticity of honey is of high importance since it affects its commercial value. The discrimination of the origin of honey is of prime importance to reinforce consumer trust. In this study, four chemometric models were developed based on the physicochemical parameters according to European and Greek legislation and one using Raman spectroscopy to discriminate Greek honey samples from three commercial monofloral botanical sources. RESULTS: The results of physicochemical (glucose, fructose, electrical activity) parameters chemometric models showed that the percentage of correc

Incidental Fungi in Host Trees Disrupt the Development of Sirex noctilio (Hymenoptera: Siricidae) Symbiotic Fungus and Larvae.

The woodwasp, Sirex noctilio Fabricius, is an exotic pest of Pinus L. in the southern hemisphere and North America, and it is an emerging threat in northeastern China. Adult woodwasps have numerous insect competitors for oviposition substrates, and developing larvae must compete for resources with other subcortical invaders. Its mutualistic fungus Amylostereum areolatum (Fr.) Boidon, is less competitive than many other fungal colonists present in pine ecosystems. This study investigated the effects of incidental, host-colonizing fungi on the growth and development of woodwasp larvae and A. are

Mistletoe Versus Host Pine: Does Increased Parasite Load Alter the Host Chemical Profile?

Stress caused by parasitic plants, e.g. mistletoes, alters certain host-plant traits as a response. While several physical implications of the parasite-host relation have been well studied, shifts in the host chemical profile remain poorly understood. Here we compare the chemical profiles of mistletoe (Viscum album subsp. austriacum) leaves and host pine (Pinus nigra subsp. salzmannii) needles and we investigate chemical changes in host needles of trees with different parasite loads (control, low, medium, and high). Our results reveal that despite the intimate contact between mistletoe and hos

Production and diversity of volatile terpenes from plants on calcareous and siliceous soils: effect of soil nutrients.

Fertilizer effects on terpene production have been noted in numerous reports. In contrast, only a few studies have studied the response of leaf terpene content to naturally different soil fertility levels. Terpene content, as determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry/flame ionization detector, and growth of Pinus halepensis, Rosmarinus officinalis, and Cistus albidus were studied on calcareous and siliceous soils under field conditions. The effect of nitrogen (N) and extractable phosphorus (P(E)) from these soils on terpenes was also investigated since calcareous soils mainly differ f

Linking increasing drought stress to Scots pine mortality and bark beetle infestations.

In the dry Swiss Rhone Valley, Scots pine forests have experienced increased mortality in recent years. It has commonly been assumed that drought events and bark beetles fostered the decline, however, whether bark beetle outbreaks increased in recent years and whether they can be linked to drought stress or increasing temperature has never been studied. In our study, we correlated time series of drought indices from long-term climate stations, 11-year mortality trends from a long-term research plot, and mortality probabilities modeled from tree rings (as an indicator of tree vitality) with doc

Effect of long-term forest fertilization on Scots pine xylem quality and wood borer performance.

We tested whether changes in long-term nutrient availability would affect the xylem quality and characteristics of Scots pine trees as a food source for the larvae of the xylophagous wood borer Hylotrupes bajulus L. (Cerambycidae). We looked for an effect of host plant growth and xylem structural traits on H. bajulus larval performance, and looked for delayed effects of long-term forest fertilization on xylem chemical quality. In general, larval performance was dependent on larval developmental stage. However, the growth of larvae also varied with host plant quality (increases in the concentra

Allergy to pine nut.

BACKGROUND: food allergy is highly prevalent in our environment, especially among atopic patients. Pinus pinea is common in our region and its fruit, the pine nut, is allergologically important. Several cases have been reported in the literature that demonstrate the existence of common antigenic bands between pine nut and almond. In this study we try to assess this finding and the possible existence of common allergens by in vitro techniques. METHODS AND RESULTS: we present a 10-year-old boy, previously diagnosed of seasonal rhinoconjunctivitis with sensitisation to grass and olive pollen, wh
