In silico designing and characterization of outer membrane protein (OmpC) gene from Salmonella enterica and its expression in Nicotiana tabacum for developing a plant-based vaccine against salmonellosis.

Salmonella, a gram-negative bacteria, is the leading cause of foodborne illness globally. Two serovars of Salmonella, S. enteritidis and S. typhimurium are responsible for the majority of human salmonellosis. Prolonged salmonellosis caused by Salmonella species leads to the development of colon cancer, which is 3rd most common cancer in the world. Porins in the outer membrane of Salmonella can be used to elicit immune response. The production of plant-based vaccine against salmonellosis and the subsequent colon cancer using outer membrane proteins can be helpful for the people of developing co

Development of quality control parameters for two Bhutanese medicinal plants (Aster flaccidus Bunge and Aster diplostephioides (DC.) Benth. ex C.B.Clarke) using traditional and modern pharmacognostical platforms.

Bhutan's scholarly traditional medical system is called Bhutanese Sowa Rigpa medicine (BSM). It was integrated with the modern healthcare system in 1967. Over 200 medicinal plants are used to produce more than 100 poly-ingredient medicinal formulations. Although BSM is supported by well-documented principles, pharmacopoeias, diagnostic procedures, treatment regimens, and traditional quality assurance systems, modern quality control parameters have become essential to distinguish closely related species and prevent contamination from exogenous impurities. This study aims to establish reliable a

Expression profile, transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of genes involved in hydrogen sulphide metabolism connecting the balance between development and stress adaptation in plants: a data-mining bioinformatics approach.

Recent research focused on novel aspects of sulphur and sulphur-containing molecules in fundamental plant processes has highlighted the importance of these compounds. Currently, the focus has shifted to the efficacy of hydrogen sulphide (H2 S) as signalling compounds that regulate different development and stress mitigation in plants. Accordingly, we used an in silico approach to study the differential expression patterns of H2 S metabolic genes at different growth/development stages and their tissue-specific expression patterns under a range of abiotic stresses. Moreover, to understand the mu

Relative growth rate (RGR) and other confounded variables: mathematical problems and biological solutions.

BACKGROUND: Relative growth rate (RGR) has a long history of use in biology. In its logged form, RGR = ln[(M + ΔM)/M], where M is size of the organism at the commencement of the study, and ΔM is new growth over time interval Δt. It illustrates the general problem of comparing non-independent (confounded) variables, e.g. (X + Y) vs. X. Thus, RGR depends on what starting M(X) is used even within the same growth phase. Equally, RGR lacks independence from its derived components, net assimilation rate (NAR) and leaf mass ratio (LMR), as RGR = NAR × LMR, so that they cannot legitimately be compared

Balancing defense and growth: antagonist of systemin receptor.

Systemin mediates systemic defense against pathogens and herbivores in solanaceous plants. However, constitutive activation of systemin-mediated defense can adversely impact plant growth. Recently, Wang et al. revealed their discovery of antiSYS, which functions as a system receptor antagonist and is instrumental in striking a balance between defense and growth.

Hierarchical global plant biophysical regions as potential analysis units.

Regional and global vegetation simulations can be problematic when analysis units to which parameters are assigned do not align with plant productivity and phenology. Having a suite of predefined biophysical regions at a variety of scales that correspond to differences in plant productivity and phenology would allow analysts to select a set of analysis units at the scale needed. In other cases, environmental or social responses may be hypothesized to be related to differences in plant dynamics. One may compare the discrimination in such data that biophysical regions at different scales provide

Morphogenesis of multicellular glandular trichomes in plants.

As the outermost epidermal structures, trichomes mediate plant-environment interactions and play critical roles in plant adaptation and stress responses. Beyond providing physical protection, many trichomes develop specialized glandular structures capable of biosynthesizing a diverse array of secondary metabolites with defensive functions. In addition, these compounds derived from glandular trichomes (GTs) also possess substantial economic value. Elucidating the regulatory mechanisms governing GT development is therefore essential for improving plant stress tolerance and for harnessing synthet

Nickel Toxicity in Plants.

Nickel (Ni) is a ubiquitous trace metal and an essential ultra micronutrient. It is a constituent of several enzymes and is currently known to be involved in a number of physiological processes in plants, including nitrogen metabolism, growth and seed germination. However, at elevated concentrations, Ni exerts multiple toxic effects on various physiological processes, which leads to impaired plant growth and morphogenesis, and reduced productivity. This review summarizes the current knowledge of the mechanisms of Ni toxicity, analyzing its effects on enzyme activity, membrane structure and fun

Lipid transfer proteins involved in plant-pathogen interactions and their molecular mechanisms.

Nonspecific lipid transfer proteins (LTPs) are small, cysteine-rich proteins that play numerous functional roles in plant growth and development, including cutin wax formation, pollen tube adhesion, cell expansion, seed development, germination, and adaptation to changing environmental conditions. LTPs contain eight conserved cysteine residues and a hydrophobic cavity that provides a wide variety of lipid-binding specificities. As members of the pathogenesis-related protein 14 family (PR14), many LTPs inhibit fungal or bacterial growth, and act as positive regulators in plant disease resistanc

Isolation and characterization of a newly discovered plant growth-promoting endophytic fungal strain from the genus Talaromyces.

In the Kandi zone of Punjab, India, root and rhizospheric soil samples were collected from the local vegetation near the Shivalik mountain foothills. Fifteen fungal colonies exhibiting distinct cultural morphology on Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) plates were selected for plant-microbe interaction studies. Among these, the isolate HNB9 was identified as a nonpathogenic root colonizer. Morphological and molecular analyses confirmed HNB9 as Talaromyces albobiverticillius, characterized by the secretion of a red pigment as a secondary metabolite. Plants colonized with T. albobiverticillius HNB9 exhib

Slow growth as a strategy for plant longevity.

Ecological theories predict a fundamental trade-off between fast growth and the probability of achieving longevity, with far-reaching consequences for ecosystem resilience and carbon residence time. Tree-ring studies have revealed a globally consistent negative relationship between growth rate and lifespan, yet comparable large-scale evidence for such trade-offs beyond trees remains scarce, largely due to methodological limitations. Here, we exploit annual growth rings formed by secondary thickening in perennial herbaceous plants to test whether the growth-longevity trade-off represents a wide

Prospecting potential of endophytes for modulation of biosynthesis of therapeutic bioactive secondary metabolites and plant growth promotion of medicinal and aromatic plants.

Medicinal and aromatic plants possess pharmacological properties (antidiabetes, anticancer, antihypertension, anticardiovascular, antileprosy, etc.) because of their potential to synthesize a wide range of therapeutic bioactive secondary metabolites. The concentration of bioactive secondry metabolites depends on plant species, local environment, soil type and internal microbiome. The internal microbiome of medicinal plants plays the crucial role in the production of bioactive secondary metabolites, namely alkaloids, steroids, terpenoids, peptides, polyketones, flavonoids, quinols and phenols.

Global plant trait relationships extend to the climatic extremes of the tundra biome.

The majority of variation in six traits critical to the growth, survival and reproduction of plant species is thought to be organised along just two dimensions, corresponding to strategies of plant size and resource acquisition. However, it is unknown whether global plant trait relationships extend to climatic extremes, and if these interspecific relationships are confounded by trait variation within species. We test whether trait relationships extend to the cold extremes of life on Earth using the largest database of tundra plant traits yet compiled. We show that tundra plants demonstrate rem

Targeted use of LEDs in improvement of production efficiency through phytochemical enrichment.

Based on available literature, ecology and economy of light emitting diode (LED) lights in plant foods production were assessed and compared to high pressure sodium (HPS) and compact fluorescent light (CFL) lamps. The assessment summarises that LEDs are superior compared to other lamp types. LEDs are ideal in luminous efficiency, life span and electricity usage. Mercury, carbon dioxide and heat emissions are also lowest in comparison to HPS and CFL lamps. This indicates that LEDs are indeed economic and eco-friendly lighting devices. The present review indicates also that LEDs have many practi
