Potassium and ammonium recovery in treated urine by zeolite based mixed matrix membranes.

Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are essential for crop growth, which are abundant in urine. Although numerous studies have developed techniques to recover ammonium and phosphorus from urine, limited research made efforts on the recovery of potassium, which is a non-renewable resource with uneven global distribution. In this study, we explored the possibility of zeolite based mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) to selectively recover ammonium and potassium from urine, with minimal detention of sodium. The findings demonstrated that upon the pre-treatment of zeolites with sodium chloride solution,

Synthesis of phospholipids in microstructures, prepared by the interaction of ammonium thiocyanate, minerals, calcium acetate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, and formaldehyde.

The photochemically formed microstructures, synthesized in sterilized aqueous mixture containing ammonium thiocyanate and formaldehyde in appropriate mineral environment in the presence of ferric chloride, on exposure to sunlight revealed the presence of phospholipids. The microsturctures synthesized in the unexposed mixture showed a less degree of synthesis. The microstructures showed the formation of amino acids, peptides, organic acids, and sugars as well.

Effect of potassium magnesium citrate on thiazide-induced hypokalemia and magnesium loss.

The study was performed to ascertain the value of potassium magnesium citrate, magnesium citrate, and potassium citrate in overcoming thiazide-induced hypokalemia and magnesium loss. Sixty-two healthy subjects were first administered hydrochlorothiazide, 50 mg/d. After 3 weeks of thiazide treatment (or earlier for potassium level </=3.5 mEq/L), they were randomized to receive one of three drugs while continuing to receive thiazide: potassium magnesium citrate (49 mEq of potassium, 24.5 mEq of magnesium), magnesium citrate (24.5 mEq/d of magnesium), or potassium citrate (49 mEq/d of potassium).

Bioinorganic Markers of a Loss of the Crystalline Lens Capsule Barrier Properties and Consequent Age-Related Cataract Development.

The age-related cataract development consequent upon a loss of the lens capsule barrier properties proved to be associated with accumulation of sodium, calcium, phosphorus and potassium. For the first time the use of spatial cluster and correlation analyses showed that the physical light scattering in the crystalline lens volume depends on changes in the lens matter elemental composition. The fields of elevated concentrations of sodium, calcium, phosphorus, potassium and chlorine conformed to the lens capsule geometry and their clustering was similar to that of opacity fields in the lens body.

Novel Fluorinated Phosphorus-Sulfur Heteroatom Compounds: Synthesis and Characterization of Ferrocenyl- and Aryl-Phosphonofluorodithioic Salts, Adducts, and Esters.

A series of novel ferrocenyl- and aryl-phosphonofluorodithioic salts, adducts, and esters has been prepared. The reaction of 2,4-diferrocenyl-1,3,2,4-diathiadiphosphetane 2,4-disulfide {[FcP(μ-S)S]2, FcLR} with dry KF or tetrabutylammonium fluoride (TBAF) led to the corresponding potassium and tetrabutylammonium salts of ferrocenyldithiofluorophosphinic acids. Treating potassium ferrocenyldithiofluorophosphinic acid with an equimolar amount of tetraphenylphosphonium chloride readily yielded the corresponding organic adducts, and with mono- and di-halogenated alkanes generated a series of the c

Bis[bis(trimethylsilyl)amino]silylene, an unstable divalent silicon compound.

The title compound, [(Me3Si)2N]2Si: (1), was prepared by the reduction of [(Me3Si)2N]2SiBr2 (2) with potassium graphite at -78 degrees C. Unlike the corresponding germanium and tin compounds, 1 is unstable, but it can be studied in solution at low temperatures. The 29Si NMR chemical shift of 1 measured at -20 degrees C was 223.9 ppm, in good agreement with a value obtained from model calculations of 233 ppm. Reaction of solutions of 1 with methanol or phenol gave the trapping products expected for the silylene, [(Me3Si)2N]2Si(H)OR (R = CH3, C6H5).

Concurrent Gitelman Syndrome and Hyperthyroidism: Diagnostic Challenges in a 51-Year-Old Patient.

BACKGROUND Gitelman syndrome (GS) is an uncommon autosomal recessive inherited disease caused by inactivating mutations in the SLC12A3 gene located on chromosome 16q13, resulting in distal tubular dysfunction. Most cases are detected during routine examinations in adulthood, due to hypokalemia and alkalosis. GS needs to be distinguished from diseases that cause hypokalemia, such as Classic Bartter syndrome and hyperthyroidism. In individual cases, GS and hyperthyroidism occur simultaneously, which is prone to misdiagnosis. CASE REPORT A 51-year-old woman with intermittent palpitations and lowe

Thermal Treatment of Chromium(III) Oxide with Carbonates Analyzed by Far-Infrared Spectroscopy.

The chemical state of thermochemically treated chromium(III) oxide (Cr2O3) with various carbonates was analyzed by far-infrared (far-IR) spectroscopy (spectral region 700-25 cm(-1)). Non-toxic Cr2O3 was oxidized with potassium, sodium, and calcium carbonate, respectively, to toxic Cr(VI) and Cr(V) compounds during thermal treatment at 1000 °C. In reverse, thermochemical treatment of Cr2O3 with magnesium carbonate lead to the formation of the Cr(III) compound MgCr2O4. Higher temperatures (>1200 °C) or reducing atmospheric conditions prevent the formation of Cr(VI)/Cr(V) compounds, too. Addition

New and future drug development for gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Medical therapy remains the most popular treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Whilst interest in drug development for GERD has declined over the last few years primarily due to the conversion of most proton pump inhibitor (PPI)'s to generic and over the counter compounds, there are still numerous areas of unmet needs in GERD. Drug development has been focused on potent histamine type 2 receptor antagonist's, extended release PPI's, PPI combination, potassium-competitive acid blockers, transient lower esophageal sphincter relaxation reducers, prokinetics, mucosal protectants an

Boron reduces the damage of copper toxicity to Citrus sinensis cell wall structure and function via maintaining copper, calcium, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus homeostasis in subcellular fractions.

Commercial citrus trees are predominantly grown in acidic soils with low boron (B) and high copper (Cu) concentrations. There are limited data on how B-Cu treatments affect the concentrations and distributions of nutrients in leaf and root subcellular fractions. Citrus sinensis seedlings were exposed to 2.5 (B2.5) or 25 (B25) μM H3BO3 × 0.5 (Cu0.5) or 350 (Cu350) μM CuCl2 for 24 weeks. Thereafter, we assayed the concentrations of Cu, calcium, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus in leaf and root cell wall (CW) fraction, organelle fraction and soluble fraction, as well as the expression levels o

Preponderance of hypokalaemia as a cause of acute onset quadriparesis in northern India/southern Nepal.

Of 68 patients who were admitted with acute quadriparesis to a hospital in northern India, over 70% were found to be hypokalaemic. The most common cause of hypokalaemia was that associated with gastroenteritis (54%). These patients had all received intravenous fluids previously. It is likely that their hypokalaemia was caused by gastrointestinal loss compounded by parenteral fluid replacement. The next most common group of hypokalaemia-associated quadriparesis had no obvious cause for hypokalaemia (38%). Hypokalaemia-induced quadriparesis is a potentially life-threatening illness which can be

Primary Aldosteronism: Small Molecule Antagonists of Mutant KCNJ5 Potassium Channels.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in the KCNJ5 (potassium inwardly rectifying channel subfamily J member 5) gene, encoding an inwardly rectifying potassium channel, can drive aldosterone overproduction in a subset of aldosterone-producing adenomas and in familial hyperaldosteronism type III. Our objective was to identify small molecule compounds that specifically antagonize mutant KCNJ5 channels. METHODS: Virtual screening of over 6 million small molecules identified compounds that putatively bind to KCNJ5 channels. The effect of 108 of these candidates was evaluated in vitro in human adrenocortical cell

Molecular basis for the dopamine reuptake and inhibition mechanism of human dopamine transporter.

Dopamine (DA) is a key neurotransmitter that regulates neuropsychological behaviors, including movement, emotion, motivation, and cognition. Dysregulation of dopaminergic signaling is linked to psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson's disease, depression, and schizophrenia. The dopamine transporter (DAT) controls DA levels by facilitating its reuptake from the synaptic cleft, terminating dopaminergic signaling. Here, we report structures of full-length human DAT (hDAT) in its apo state and in complexes with substrates and antidepressant compounds. The antidepressant c
