Hyperkalemia has long been the focus of potassium (K + ) dysregulation in patients with CKD. However, although the risks of hyperkalemia are well known and clearly important, there is growing evidence that hypokalemia occurs at least as frequently in those with CKD and is associated with an increase in all-cause or cardiovascular mortality as well as a faster progression of renal disease and earlier requirement for KRT. This is a brief review of low K + intake and hypokalemia in patients with CKD.

Hypokalaemic rhabdomyolysis is unusual, but the association between hypokalaemia and rhabdomyolysis can be overlooked if intracellular potassium leakage normalizes serum potassium by the time of presentation. This report describes a patient who presented with severe pain due to non-traumatic rhabdomyolysis and was found to have serum potassium of 1.4 mmol/L; magnesium 0.40 mmol/L; phosphate 1.40 mmol/L; adjusted calcium 1.87 mmol/L and creatine kinase 6421 U/L. In this case, intervention occurred before rhabdomyolysis could progress to the stage at which serum potassium may have self-corrected

Gluten free (GF) diets are prone to mineral deficiency, thus effective monitoring of the elemental composition of GF products is important to ensure a balanced micronutrient diet. The objective of this study was to test the potential of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analysis combined with chemometrics for at-line monitoring of ash, potassium and magnesium content of GF flours: tapioca, potato, maize, buckwheat, brown rice and a GF flour mixture. Concentrations of ash, potassium and magnesium were determined with reference methods and LIBS. PCA analysis was performed and presented

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction was closely related to vitamin D (VD) deficiency, but the mechanism remained unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mechanism of VDdef on the function of cardiac ANS in rats.
METHODS: After 10 weeks of VD deficiency feeding, we successfully established a VD-deficient rat model. The body weight of rats was recorded, and the levels of calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), creatinine (CRE), triglyceride (TG), hemoglobin (HG), and 25(OH)VD3 in serum were detected by corresponding kits. Short-time frequ

Sudden unexplained death syndrome (SUDS) among young healthy Thai construction workers in Singapore has been given much publicity recently. From May 1982 to July 1990, 226 SUDS were reported among them. In this article we review and compare studies on SUDS in the United States and South-east Asia. So far, studies to identify the causal factors have been inconclusive and they cannot explain the male preponderance and occurrence of death during sleep. Current hypotheses about the cause of SUDS have included stress, genetic factors, dietary deficiency (particularly thiamine), potassium deficiency

A 15-year-old girl was admitted to emergency department with an acute flaccid tetraparesis with no other symptoms. A history of recurrent similar episodes with spontaneous recovery was reported and no family history was known. Laboratory tests revealed severe hypokalaemia and hypokaluria. Symptoms resolution occurred after potassium replacement. The diagnosis of hypokalaemic periodic paralysis (HPP) was confirmed by genetic testing, which revealed a not previously described mutation in CACNA1S gene (c.3715C>G p.Arg1239Gly). HPP is a rare neuromuscular disorder that causes episodic attacks of f

RATIONALE: The occurrence of hyperkalemia after esophagectomy is clinically rare. Patients who underwent esophagectomy often have a serum potassium level due to perioperative reduced intake, fluids loss, consumption and other reasons. These patients often require the artificial administration of potassium. Rapid fluid loss and physiological consumption lead to the deficiency of potassium, even hypokalemia. Patients often require the addition of a large amount of potassium after operation. The occurrence of hyperkalemia after esophagectomy is never been reported.
PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient

Carbonic anhydrase II deficiency is an extremely rare inborn error of metabolism that constitutes a triad osteopetrosis, renal tubular acidosis and intracerebral calcification. Unlike other subtypes of osteopetrosis, the presence of developmental delay and relative infrequency of skeletal fractures may not be a typical signs of symptoms indolent trajectory. This case report demonstrates a 11-year-old boy who had a bilateral midshaft tibial fracture despite low mechanism of injury. He was found to have severe respiratory distress with hypokalemia shortly after arriving to the emergency departme

Potassium iodide has demonstrated several therapeutic applications over time, being the choice for shielding the thyroid during radiation emergencies involving radioiodine release. Amidst the ongoing military conflict between Ukraine and Russia and the growing concern regarding the potential deployment of nuclear weapons, there has been a surge in the demand for potassium iodide across Europe. This work aimed to comprehensively review the current knowledge regarding the pharmacology, physiology, adverse effects, the protective role in reducing the risk of thyroid cancer and recommendations for

Normal Mg metabolism has been reviewed. The most expeditious method of identifying disorders of Mg deficiency or excess is to order a serum Mg determination. In our opinion, routine serum Mg would significantly enhance the clinician's ability to identify disorders of Mg metabolism. Refractory K repletion can be avoided by identifying co-existing hypomagnesemia in hypokalemic patients; as a result, prompting the clinician to institute simultaneous repletion of Mg as well as K. While oral Mg is the preferred route of repletion in critically ill patients, intravenous administration of Mg is recom

Isolated nerve fibres of the median nerve of normal baboons and baboons kept on diets deficient in vitamin B12, and supplemented with potassium cyanide and potassium thiocyanate injections, were examined by the teased-fibre technique. Regression lines of internodal length on fibre diameter were obtained. Small differences between the groups were apparent but were of uncertain significance. There was occasional evidence of segmental demyelination and Wallerian degeneration but this was not characteristic of any particular group.

Serum and muscle electrolytes were determined in a case of primary aldosteronism before and after potassium and magnesium infusions as well as spironolactone treatment and following surgery. Repeated potassium infusions resulted in a transient normalization of the muscle potassium (K/m), followed within 3-4 days by a return to the previously low K/m. Magnesium infusions did not give any increase in muscle magnesium (Mg/m). On the contrary, there was a decrease in Mg/m concomitant with a decrease in K/m. Treatment with spironolactone for one month was followed by a normalization of both serum a

Clearance experiments were carried out in pair-fed rats to examine the long-term effects of adrenalectomy and selective adrenal corticosteroid replacement in physiological amounts on renal potassium transport. To this end, clearance studies were conducted in rats that were sham operated, or adrenalectomized (ADX). ADX animals were given either vehicle, aldosterone (0.5 microgram/100 g body wt per day), dexamethasone (1.2 micrograms/100 g body wt per day), or aldosterone and dexamethasone, by osmotic minipump for 7-9 d whereupon clearance experiments were conducted. After chronic hormone treatm

The many causes of clinical magnesium deficiency can be placed into 2 categories: diminished intake of magnesium, and enhanced losses of magnesium, either through the gastrointestinal tract or through the kidneys. Examples of the first category include alcoholism, starvation, anorexia due to neoplastic disease and/or chemotherapy. Examples of the second category include severe diarrhoeal states, gastrointestinal fistulae, malabsorption, diuretic therapy and gentamicin therapy. Estimates of the prevalence of clinical hypomagnesaemia range from 6 to 11% in hospitalised patients. Serum predictors

The margatoxin-sensitive Kv1.3 is the major potassium channel in the plasma membrane of T lymphocytes. Electron microscopy, patch clamp, and immunological studies identified the potassium channel Kv1.3, thought to be localized exclusively in the cell membrane, in the inner mitochondrial membrane of T lymphocytes. Patch clamp of mitoplasts and mitochondrial membrane potential measurements disclose the functional expression of a mitochondrial margatoxin-sensitive potassium channel. To identify unambiguously the mitochondrial localization of Kv1.3, we employed a genetic model and stably transfect

The excretion of potassium (K+) decreased by 50% (30 v 63 mEq/d, P < .01) when subjects consumed a diet that was low in K+ for 3 days. Although part of this conservation of K+ was achieved in part by suppressing the release of aldosterone, nevertheless providing exogenous mineralocorticoids did not lead to a large kaliuresis when there was a modest degree of K+ depletion. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to evaluate possible mechanisms for this antikaliuretic response to mineralocorticoids. The renal handling of K+ was examined by independent analysis of the two factors that influenc

Seventeen elderly patients are described, who showed minor changes in the e.c.g. recovery phase. Serum potassium levels appeared to be normal, but red-blood-cell potassium was found to be more or less markedly reduced. Restoration of the latter to normal values, which followed treatment with potassium salts was also associated with normalization of the e.c.g. pattern. These observations demonstrate that electrolyte disorders, and particularly hypokalaemia, may determine 'minor' alterations of repolarization much more frequently than is usually thought, and that determination of serum potassium
