Externalizing Problem Behaviors Among Chinese Early Adolescents in Poverty: Profiles and Longitudinal Change.

Children's externalizing problem behavior is one of the most explored topics among parents, educators, and research scholars. The purpose of this study is to examine the developmental changes of externalizing problem behavior in the early years of poor children and adolescents and the influence of family factors such as family functioning and parental marital quality on the developmental changes. Seven hundred and seventy-eight early adolescents (Mage = 13.7, SD = 2.53) from poor families were studied longitudinally for 14 months. The results showed that three potential characteristics of exte

Intergenerational trauma, parenting, and child behavior among African American families living in poverty.

OBJECTIVE: Limited research has documented the continuity of trauma exposure between parents and young children and the relation between intergenerational trauma and maternal parenting and child outcomes. This study examined intergenerational trauma among African American families from low-income backgrounds and its relation to parenting processes and children's behavior. METHOD: Participants represent a subsample of 157 African American mothers and their 4- to 7-year-old children in an urban prekindergarten program. Researchers collected data on maternal and child exposure to trauma, demogra

Pediatric RISE: Development of a Poverty-Targeted Cash Support Intervention for Pediatric Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Poverty is independently associated with relapse and death in childhood cancer despite highly standardized treatment. Prior data show that direct cash support interventions are feasible and improve child outcomes; however, no such interventions exist within pediatric oncology. To address this, we aimed to pilot and refine Pediatric RISE (Resource Intervention to Support Equity), a novel, direct cash support intervention in pediatric oncology. PROCEDURE: This was a single-arm pilot study among low-income children with cancer at a single center. Participants received twice-monthly c

Demographic and socioeconomic factors affecting relative poverty level of older adults in Türkiye.

BACKGROUND: As Türkiye’s older adult population grows rapidly, poverty among older adults has become a pressing social issue. This study aims to guide policymakers by examining the sociodemographic and economic factors influencing poverty levels among older adults. METHODS: Data from the Income and Living Conditions Survey (ILCS) of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) were utilized in this study. Poverty thresholds were set at 40% and 50% of median household income, categorizing households into three distinct poverty levels. Accordingly, a generalized ordered logistic regression analy

Brain morphometry and chronic inflammation in Bangladeshi children growing up in extreme poverty.

Over three hundred million children live in environments of extreme poverty, and the biological and psychosocial hazards endemic to these environments often expose these children to infection, disease, and inflammatory responses. Chronic inflammation in early childhood has been associated with diminished cognitive outcomes, and despite this established relationship, the mechanisms explaining how inflammation affects brain development are not well known. Importantly, the prevalence of chronic inflammation in areas of extreme poverty raises the possibility that it may also serve as a mechanism e

Cruel optimism, affective governmentality and frontline poverty governance: 'You can promise the world'.

Cruel Optimism' (Berlant, 2011) sustains neoliberalism by promising freedom and autonomy through adherence to and performance of competitive behaviours. As Brown (2003) observes, neoliberalism is a discourse which operates, not through repression or restriction, but through promising self-fulfilment and happiness. The role of emotion-management in poverty governance has been widely acknowledged. However, this has focused on cultivation of population-level punitive, negative emotions (such as shame, stigma, or resentment). It is widely acknowledged that welfare provision has been specifically t

Measuring Disability Inclusion: Feasibility of Using Existing Multidimensional Poverty Data in South Africa.

This paper presents a framework for measuring disability inclusion in order to examine the associations between disability severity and levels of inclusion, provides an example of its operationalization, and assesses the feasibility of using an existing dataset to measure disability inclusion using this framework. Inclusion here refers to the extent to which people with disabilities are accepted and recognized as individuals with authority, enjoy personal relationships, participate in recreation and social activities, have appropriate living conditions, are able to make productive contribution

Examining gender inequalities in factors associated with income poverty in Mexican rural households.

According to 2016 official estimates, almost 60% of the rural population in Mexico (16.9 million people) had income levels below the poverty line, and approximately 29.2% (8.3 million) could not even afford the basic food basket. Whereas most poverty research disregards gender and exclusively analyzes average income or the expected probability of being poor, we depart from these approaches by examining the effect of potential risk factors on two of the lowest quantiles of income-to-poverty ratio distribution, namely the corresponding to poor and extremely poor families. Focusing on identifying

Association between early childhood caries and poverty in low and middle income countries.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between early childhood caries (ECC) in 3-5-year-old children, seven indicators of poverty and the indicator of monetary poverty in low- and middle-income countries (LICs, MICs). METHODS: This ecologic study utilized 2007 to 2017 country-level data for LICs and MICs. Explanatory variables were seven indicators of poverty namely food, water, sanitation, health, shelter, access to information, education; and monetary poverty. The outcome variable was the percentage of 3-5-year-old children with ECC. A series of univariate general

Shame and ("managed") resentment: Emotion and entitlement among Israeli mothers living in poverty.

Of the range of negative emotional states, shame is commonly found to characterize experiences of people living in poverty. However, relatively little attention has been directed toward exploring other emotions that accompany the shame. Not exploring other emotions, the possibility that working-class mothers go through a struggling emotional experience in relation to their experiences of how authorities validate their belonging, is left out of scope. Exploring the notion of resentment creates a conceptual space for considering this possibility, as it flags the importance of belonging and entit

Predicting Pathways into Criminal Behavior: The Intersection of Race, Gender, Poverty, Psychological Factors.

Women's incarceration rates have increased dramatically over recent years; with Black women's rates disproportionately and significantly higher than other races. Researchers have attempted to understand this criminal justice involvement disparity, and have suggested two major theoretical pathways Differential Involvement and Differential Selection Theories to explain these racial differences. We use the Differential Involvement Theory as a framework to discuss how the objective experience of economic disadvantage as measured by indicators of structural hardship including educational and employ

Disparities in TKA Outcomes: Census Tract Data Show Interactions Between Race and Poverty.

BACKGROUND: Race is an important predictor of TKA outcomes in the United States; however, analyses of race can be confounded by socioeconomic factors, which can result in difficulty determining the root cause of disparate outcomes after TKA. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We asked: (1) Are race and socioeconomic factors at the individual level associated with patient-reported pain and function 2 years after TKA? (2) What is the interaction between race and community poverty and patient-reported pain and function 2 years after TKA? METHODS: We identified all patients undergoing TKA enrolled in a hospita

Interplay between environment, agriculture and infectious diseases of poverty: case studies in China.

Changes in the natural environment and agricultural systems induced by economic and industrial development, including population dynamics (growth, urbanization, migration), are major causes resulting in the persistence, emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases in developing countries. In the face of rapid demographic, economic and social transformations, the People's Republic of China (P.R. China) is undergoing unprecedented environmental and agricultural change. We review emerging and re-emerging diseases such as schistosomiasis, dengue, avian influenza, angiostrongyliasis and soil-t

2006 Harben Lecture. World poverty and population health: the need for sustainable change.

Despite important recent initiatives to improve the health of the most disadvantaged in the world (the Millennium Development Goals, debt cancellation campaigns), poverty and preventable diseases still plague many parts of the globe. Sub-Saharan Africa remains one of the most severely affected. It is the only region in the world where life expectancy has not seen much improvement. Some countries have employed strategies of investment in public services, such as education, with positive results (e.g. the 'tiger economies'). Others have tried to follow prescribed strategies from global instituti

Terminal HIV disease and extreme poverty: a review of 307 home care files.

This retrospective study of 307 patients with advanced HIV disease residing in downtown Montreal was carried out to examine the nature and consequences of the services they received according to their degree of poverty. The findings showed that, between 1 April 1991 and 31 March 1997, patients living in extreme poverty were more likely to complain of uncontrolled pain during the final week of home visits and were more likely to die in hospital than were their more financially secure counterparts. This held true even though the poorer group had a similar clinical profile at diagnosis and were p

Associations between county-level poverty and firearm injury health encounters in Maryland, USA.

OBJECTIVE: Firearm injuries are among the four leading causes of injury deaths in the United States. Prior studies have shown the association between poverty and firearm injuries on the national level, but more focused data at the state level has yet to be studied. The objective of this study was to examine the association between county-level poverty and firearm injury health encounters in Maryland, USA. STUDY DESIGN: This was an ecological study conducted on counties in Maryland from July 2015-July 2020. METHODS: This study consisted of residents of all ages with firearm injuries who prese

Rural E-commerce policy and environmental pollution: Evidence from China's poverty-stricken counties.

Eradicating extreme poverty and protecting the environment are two significant tasks in the historical development of humanity. However, poverty alleviation policies may also lead to environmental pollution while generating economic benefits. This paper examines the influence of the "Rural E-commerce Comprehensive Demonstration" (RECD) project on the air quality of pilot poverty counties through the staggered difference in differences (DID) model with propensity score matching (PSM) method. The results show that RECD project significantly increased air pollution in the pilot counties, despite

The prevalence of cardiovascular disease risk factors among adults living in extreme poverty.

Evidence on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor prevalence among adults living below the World Bank's international line for extreme poverty (those with income <$1.90 per day) globally is sparse. Here we pooled individual-level data from 105 nationally representative household surveys across 78 countries, representing 85% of people living in extreme poverty globally, and sorted individuals by country-specific measures of household income or wealth to identify those in extreme poverty. CVD risk factors (hypertension, diabetes, smoking, obesity and dyslipidaemia) were present among 17.5% (9

Machine learning study using 2020 SDHS data to determine poverty determinants in Somalia.

Extensive research has been conducted on poverty in developing countries using conventional regression analysis, which has limited prediction capability. This study aims to address this gap by applying advanced machine learning (ML) methods to predict poverty in Somalia. Utilizing data from the first-ever 2020 Somalia Demographic and Health Survey (SDHS), a cross-sectional study design is considered. ML methods, including random forest (RF), decision tree (DT), support vector machine (SVM), and logistic regression, are tested and applied using R software version 4.1.2, while conventional metho

Persistent poverty disparities in incidence and outcomes among oral and pharynx cancer patients.

PURPOSE: Disparities in oral cavity and pharyngeal cancer based on race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status have been reported, but the impact of living within areas that are persistently poor at the time of diagnosis and outcome is unknown. This study aimed to investigate whether the incidence, 5-year relative survival, stage at diagnosis, and mortality among patients with oral cavity and pharyngeal cancers varied by persistent poverty. METHODS: Data were drawn from the SEER database (2006-2017) and included individuals diagnosed with oral cavity and pharyngeal cancers. Persistent poverty (at
