Long-term shifts in pikeperch, Sander lucioperca, diet composition in a changing reservoir.

As a significant piscivorous predator, the pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) plays a critical role in regulating aquatic ecosystems. Understanding its size-related feeding behaviour is thus vital for assessing its impact. To evaluate its role in the ecosystem, stomach content analysis provides useful insights into predator-prey dynamics. This study investigated the stomach content and dietary patterns of pikeperch in the Lipno Reservoir, Czech Republic, across two distinct time periods: the 1966-1970 (19's) and the 2010-2022 (20's). We analysed the stomach contents of 875 pikeperch specimens and r

Feeding ecology and trophic interactions of the narrow-barred Spanish Mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) in the Central Taiwan Strait.

Understanding the foraging ecology of marine predators is essential for ecosystem-based fisheries management. This study examined the diet of the narrow-barred Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) in the Central Taiwan Strait using stomach content and stable isotope analyses integrated with an isotopic mixing model. A total of 1,733 specimens were collected between January 2017 and March 2022. Stomach content analysis revealed that 79.8% had empty stomachs, while the remainder mainly contained semi-digested fish remains. Among identifiable prey, composition varied by size and season. Sar

Males miss and females forgo: Auditory masking from vessel noise impairs foraging efficiency and success in killer whales.

Understanding how the environment mediates an organism's ability to meet basic survival requirements is a fundamental goal of ecology. Vessel noise is a global threat to marine ecosystems and is increasing in intensity and spatiotemporal extent due to growth in shipping coupled with physical changes to ocean soundscapes from ocean warming and acidification. Odontocetes rely on biosonar to forage, yet determining the consequences of vessel noise on foraging has been limited by the challenges of observing underwater foraging outcomes and measuring noise levels received by individuals. Risk Assessment and the Effects of Refuge Availability on the Defensive Behaviors of the Southern Unstriped Scorpion (Vaejovis carolinianus).

Selection should favor individuals that acquire, process, and act on relevant environmental signals to avoid predation. Studies have found that scorpions control their use of venom: both when it is released and the total volume expelled. However, this research has not included how a scorpion's awareness of environmental features influences these decisions. The current study tested 18 Vaejovis carolinianus scorpions (nine females and nine males) by placing them in circular arenas supplied with varying numbers (zero, two, or four) of square refuges and by tracking their movements overnight. The

Presence of Breeding Birds Improves Body Condition for a Crocodilian Nest Protector.

Ecological associations where one species enhances habitat for another nearby species (facilitations) shape fundamental community dynamics and can promote niche expansion, thereby influencing how and where species persist and coexist. For the many breeding birds facing high nest-predation pressure, enemy-free space can be gained by nesting near more formidable animals for physical protection. While the benefits to protected species seem well documented, very few studies have explored whether and how protector species are affected by nest protection associations. Long-legged wading birds (Pelec

Can Scat Analysis Describe the Feeding Habits of Big Cats? A Case Study with Jaguars (Panthera onca) in Southern Pantanal, Brazil.

Large cats feeding habits have been studied through two main methods: scat analysis and the carcasses of prey killed by monitored animals. From November 2001 to April 2004, we studied jaguar predation patterns using GPS telemetry location clusters on a cattle ranch in southern Pantanal. During this period, we recorded 431 carcasses of animals preyed upon by monitored jaguars. Concurrently, we collected 125 jaguar scats opportunistically. We compared the frequencies of prey found through each method. We also compared the prey communities using Bray-Curtis similarity coefficient. These compariso

Feast or flee: bioelectrical regulation of feeding and predator evasion behaviors in the planktonic alveolate Favella sp. (Spirotrichia).

Alveolate (ciliates and dinoflagellates) grazers are integral components of the marine food web and must therefore be able to sense a range of mechanical and chemical signals produced by prey and predators, integrating them via signal transduction mechanisms to respond with effective prey capture and predator evasion behaviors. However, the sensory biology of alveolate grazers is poorly understood. Using novel techniques that combine electrophysiological measurements and high-speed videomicroscopy, we investigated the sensory biology of Favella sp., a model alveolate grazer, in the context of

Intraguild predation and feeding preferences in three species of phytoseiid mite used for biological control.

The ecological impact of introduced biological control agents on native species of arthropods is a matter of considerable debate. This study investigated the ability of the non-native predatory mite Neoseiulus californicus to feed on the native Typhlodromus pyri and vice versa, as both species now co-occur in UK orchards. Typhlodromips montdorensis is a candidate for introduction into the UK as a glasshouse biological control agent. The ability of T. montdorensis to feed on the widely used N. californicus was investigated to identify possible intraguild predation, which might influence the eff

Localization and electrical activity of the distance chemoreceptors that mediate predator avoidance behaviour in Acmaea limatula and Acmaea scutum (gastropoda, prosobranchia).

1. The marine gastropods Acmaea (Collisella) limatula and Acmaea (Notoacmea) scutum respond to distant predatory starfish (i.e. to starfish scent) by moving up a vertical surface. 2. The distance chemoreceptors that mediate this avoidance behaviour are located on the mantle margin. Heat cauterization of the limpets' mantle margin eliminates their responsiveness to Pisaster ochraceus scent, while a similar cauterization of the ctenidium and the osphradia does not diminish the avoidance behaviour. 3. Primary afferent electrical activity can be recorded from the chemoreceptors on the mantle margi

Eavesdropping Kairomone Markers of Interspecific Communication in Predatory and Parasitic Arthropods: A Review.

Interspecific chemical communication in insects is quintessential in mediating ecological interactions across trophic levels. Kairomones are semiochemicals emitted by one species (the emitter) and are inadvertently beneficial to another species (the receiver). These chemical markers are particularly critical in prey-predator or host-parasitoid relationships, such as host/prey location and selection. Host/prey bodies and their by-products emit pheromones, volatile and non-volatile cuticular compounds, and induce plant volatiles by oviposition, zoophytophagy, and herbivory, which are copious sou

Contrasting Starvation Strategies in Congeneric Pentatomids: A Predator (Arma chinensis) Versus a Pest (Halyomorpha halys).

Closely related insect species with different feeding habits may exhibit divergent physiological responses to starvation. Here, we compared the predatory Arma chinensis and the phytophagous pest Halyomorpha halys under identical starvation conditions. A. chinensis survived significantly longer than H. halys (females: 39 vs. 9 days; males: 29 vs. 7 days), with slower body weight decline. Starvation severely suppressed reproduction in both species, associated with arrested ovarian development and downregulation of vitellogenin (Vg) genes. In carbohydrate, lipid, and amino acid metabolism, A. chi

Predation, prey preference and switching behaviour of the soil predatory mite Blattisocius mali (Mesostigmata: Blattisociidae) on immature stages of Drosophila hydei.

Blattisocius mali is a soil predatory mite known to disperse phoretically on adult drosophilid fruit flies and feed ectoparasitically on them during transport. Despite this association, its behavioural and trophic interactions with immature drosophilid stages remain poorly understood. This study analysed B. mali's ability to prey on Drosophila hydei immature stages and examined the effects of prior rearing diet on predation, prey preference, and switching. Two types of predatory mite were compared: (1) fly-reared (FR) and (2) mite-reared (MR), raised on fruit flies or acarid mites, respectivel

Hunting ecology predicts eye arrangements in the modular visual system of spiders.

Vision is one of the most important senses used by animals and contributes to fundamental behaviors, including foraging, navigation, and mate detection and selection.1 Although much is known about how eye position and orientation correlate to ecology in the context of binocularity,2 animals with multipartite visual systems (more than two eyes) remain comparatively neglected. Spiders are highly successful predators that occupy a range of ecological niches and usually possess eight eyes. Here, we use three-dimensional geometric morphometrics and evolutionary modeling to test whether eye position

Evidence of predation events by marine mammals at offshore wind farms.

Anthropogenic structures in the marine environment alter the availability and distribution of food for marine animals with potential consequences for individual fitness, population and community dynamics. Knowledge of how marine mammals' behaviour or foraging activities are influence by existing wind farms is essential to predict the effect of future large-scale renewable energy development on local or regional populations. During acoustic tracking of demersal gadoid fish at two offshore wind farms in Scotland, six Atlantic cod were predated by a marine mammal close to or in the vicinity of tu

Social learning in predators: Indirect effects let novel prey exclude familiar prey.

Predation is a fundamental ecological process. Social learning by predators is ubiquitous. However, social learning is not incorporated into most ecological theories of predator-prey dynamics. We report how social learning changes results of classic one-predator, two-prey models. In our study, one prey (familiar) can be innately exploited by any predator. The other prey (novel) can only be exploited by predators that have learned how to consume it (i.e., informed predators). Social learning converts naïve predators into informed predators via mass action. This governs exploitation of the novel

Megaraptoridae: a gracile model of large predators? insights from a multiproxy approach.

Megaraptora constitute a distinctive clade of Cretaceous theropods that evolved long and powerful arms, long and unsculptured skull and, particularly, highly pneumatized and slender skeletons in comparison to their relatives (e.g., tyrannosaurs). Furthermore, younger and late branching megaraptorans become progressively bigger and more pneumatic, which has been related with the extinction of carcharodontosaurids in the Cenomanian-Turonian limit and the niche shifting of megaraptorans as top predators of their ecosystems. Notwithstanding, the progressive increment of the pneumaticity and body m

Direct evidence of trophic interaction between a crocodyliform and a large terror bird in the Middle Miocene of La Venta, Colombia.

Direct evidence of predation and other trophic relationships provide valuable information about trophic interactions between species in palaeo-communities. Data on ecological interactions amongst extant apex predators open a unique opportunity to better understand how sympatric apex predators coexisted or interacted with each other in the past. Here, we describe direct evidence of a predation or scavenging event in which we hypothesize that a medium-sized caiman (possibly Purussaurus neivensis) consumed (either through scavenging or through direct predation) a large terror bird. The distal par

Defence Against Desiccation and Predation in Lophyohylini Casque-Headed Tree Frogs.

Casque-headed tree frogs (Lophyohylini) can have a very large and distinctive head characterised by hyperossification of their cranial skin. This type of skull was primarily associated with phragmosis, a behaviour in which the frog enters holes backwards and seals them with its head to prevent water loss in challenging environments. Further investigations revealed that hyperossification also gives rise to bony spines interspersed with skin poison glands. These peculiar anatomical features of the head make it challenging for predators to prey on the frogs in phragmosis. When bitten on the head,

Predators hide against similarly coloured species to camouflage on the move.

Many predators aim to approach prey without being detected or identified. Ambush predators often achieve this through camouflage, such as background matching. This strategy is thought to be ineffective for actively moving predators, as motion typically breaks camouflage. However, if animals could select and remain close to similarly coloured moving objects, then camouflage could be achieved on the move. Using detailed natural observations, we demonstrate that colour polymorphic trumpetfish (Aulostomus maculatus) selectively choose to 'shadow'-swim closely alongside-other fishes of similar colo

Ctenophores are a highly impactful predatory guild in open oceanic ecosystems.

The emergence of optical plankton sampling techniques has revealed that gelatinous zooplankton predators are considerably more numerous than previously observed.1,2 This recognition of the widespread presence of gelatinous zooplankton challenges our understanding of oceanic food-web dynamics because gelatinous zooplankton have traditionally been viewed as only minor players in oceanic biogeochemical cycles, which are critical in regulating atmospheric carbon dioxide.3,4,5,6,7,8 Ctenophores (commonly called comb jellies) can be numerically dominant predators in these gelatinous communities but
