Planners of sexual health promotion interventions for adolescents and young adults confront many challenges. Multiple factors are associated with high-risk sexual behavior, and its amelioration is complex. Sexual health promotion involves more than just targeted, short-term disease prevention efforts. Primary prevention programs must be well designed, long term, and research based. The article presents suggestions for primary prevention activities in light of current social cognitive theories and research-delineated risk factors.

This study evaluated the incidence and outcome of serious brain injury from traffic-related causes in 695 patients admitted to the Department of Neurosurgery at Karolinska Hospital during 1981-1992. A total of 37.3% of patients were car occupants, 28.1% pedestrians, 12.9% bicyclists, 12.2% car-bicycle/car-moped and 9.5% motorcycle riders. We surveyed 1,500 primary care physicians in Massachusetts regarding their current attitudes and practices, as well as their interests and preferences in regard to a continuing education course, in cancer prevention and screening. Until now, it was assumed that primary prevention of congenital toxoplasmosis was possible by means of specific hygienic measures. A prospective survey of pregnant women was made at a hospital in Brussels over the period 1979-1986 to assess the impact of such a prevention program. This statement is an update of the 1970 Inter-Society Commission for Heart Disease Resources ( ICHD ) report, "Primary Prevention of the Atherosclerotic Diseases." The charge to the Study Group was to assess relevant new data and, where the evidence is less than definitive, to formulate conclusions and recommendations based on best judgment. Current developments are reviewed, and issues raised in response to the earlier recommendations are considered. Recommendations are intended to serve as a guide for individual behavior, physician practice, and the formulation of public health policy.

BACKGROUND: Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) synthesize high-quality information to support evidence-based clinical practice. In primary care, numerous CPGs must be integrated to address the needs of patients with multiple risks and conditions. The BETTER program aims to improve prevention and screening for cancer and chronic disease in primary care by synthesizing CPGs into integrated, actionable recommendations. Patients with cirrhosis develop varices at a rate of 5% per year, and a third of patients with high-risk varices will bleed. The mortality associated with variceal haemorrhage is typically 20%, and still exceeds that of myocardial infarction. Current options to prevent the first variceal bleed include noncardioselective beta-blockers or variceal band ligation. INTRODUCTION: Parastomal hernia is a well known clinical problem, and up to 50% of all patients having a stoma will eventually develop a parastomal hernia. There are many surgical options available for the repair of a parastomal hernia, but the prevention of hernia development has only recently received scientific attention. The most encouraging results have included the use of a mesh inserted at the primary operation. We have, therefore, chosen to review the literature regarding the results of operative techniques, including mesh placement, for the prevention of a parastomal hernia.

Photoreceptor cell death in inherited retinal degeneration is accompanied by over-activation of histone deacetylases (HDAC).
