Nonhuman primate models of menopause workshop.

The Nonhuman Primate Models of Menopause Workshop was held on the National Institutes of Health campus in January 2001. The purpose of this workshop, sponsored by the National Institute on Aging, was to review what is known about the female reproductive aging process in various species of monkeys (particularly rhesus, baboons, cynomolgus, and chimpanzees), including hormone profiles during the menopausal transition, occurrence of hot flashes, extent of age-related and menopause-associated changes in hormone levels on metabolism, bone loss, and impaired cardiovascular and cognitive function. Photodynamic endometrial ablation in the nonhuman primate.

OBJECTIVE: To test the effectiveness of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA)-induced photodynamic endometrial ablation in the rhesus monkey under varying conditions of light delivery (fractionated versus continuous) and steroid priming. METHODS: Photodynamic endometrial ablation was carried out in 17 rhesus monkeys that were either postmenopausal or in the early proliferative phase. Four hours after intralumenal injection of ALA (250 mg in 1 mL hyskon), a quartz fiber with a diffusing tip was inserted. A KTP tunable dye laser delivered 300 mW of light (635 nm) for 60 minutes in either continuous or fr

Auditory processing in primate cerebral cortex.

Auditory information is relayed from the ventral nucleus of the medial geniculate complex to a core of three primary or primary-like areas of auditory cortex that are cochleotopically organized and highly responsive to pure tones. Auditory information is then distributed from the core areas to a surrounding belt of about seven areas that are less precisely cochleotopic and generally more responsive to complex stimuli than tones. Recent studies indicate that the belt areas relay to the rostral and caudal divisions of a parabelt region at a third level of processing in the cortex lateral to the

Tolerance in a concordant nonhuman primate model.

BACKGROUND: We have previously demonstrated that induction of mixed lymphohematopoietic chimerism resulted in donor specific renal allograft tolerance without the need for chronic immunosuppression in nonhuman primates. Here we have tested whether tolerance can be similarly induced for baboon to cynomolgus renal xenografts. METHODS: After preconditioning with anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG), nonlethal total body irradiation, and thymic irradiation, cynomolgus monkeys underwent splenectomy, native nephrectomies, and baboon marrow and renal transplants. Postoperative cyclosporine was given for 28

Development of a nonhuman primate model for fetoscopy.

Twenty-four fetoscopy procedures were performed on 22 monkeys (19 Macaca mulatta, one M. fascicularis, two Erythrocebus patas) with gestational ages ranging from 66 to 145 days. Insertion of the fetoscope without ultrasound guidance was easy in 14 and difficult in ten procedures. Amniotic fluid exchange with normal saline, to improve visualization, was successful in eight of 13 procedures. Fetal blood sampling was successful in four of nine attempts. Nine monkeys aborted within 17 days of the fetoscopy, the remaining 13 went to term or were used in other research protocols. Major complications

Primate experiments on mandibular growth direction.

Induced oral respiration in eight growing monkeys led to a lowering of the chin, a steeper mandibular plane angle, and an increase in the gonial angle as compared with eight control animals. The posterior border of the mandible maintained its normal inclination relative to the skull. The mandible underwent a posterior rotation in the experimental animals and an anterior rotation in the controls. The findings suggest that the position of the chin and the inclination of the mandibular plane are controlled by the balance between the suprahyoid and the orofacial muscles. Since the posterior border

Naloxone-induced electrographic seizures in the primate.

Electrographic seizure activity was recorded shortly following naxolone injections in artificially ventilated, methadone-treated stump-tailed macaques. Plasma-methadone concentrations prior to seizure activity were many times higher than those that have produced respiratory depression and death in nonventilated monkeys. The duration of seizure activity was clearly related to the dose of naloxone. Naloxone was without epileptogenic properties in animals that had not been pretreated with methadone. The results suggest that methadone and naloxone have additive epileptogenic properties when high b

Primate model of sprue-like syndrome.

An experimental model resembling so-called tropical sprue has been produced in young, growing rhesus monkeys kept on a protein-deficient diet. At a 2% level of protein intake, the animals became frankly diseased after two months, but at a 5% protein intake the symptoms appeared after five months. The animals lost weight, their skin became brittle, the fur lost luster, and facial edema appeared. The hematocrit, and serum folate, protein and albumin were significantly decreased, and intestinal absorption of fat, D-xylose, radioactive vitamin B12 and folic acid showed marked depression. The jejun

The primate hyolaryngeal apparatus and herbivorous modifications.

The predominantly herbivorous diet of the howler and baboon is responsible for modification in the configuration of the hyolaryngeal apparatus. In a herbivorous primate the air sac located in the concavity of the body of the hyoid bone takes on a resonating function. There is definite correlation between : (1) the presence of a large epiglottis with a convex superior surface, (2) close apposition of the soft palate with the epiglottis, (3) presence of high aryepiglottic and lateral epiglottic folds, (4) presence of air sacs and (5) concavity of the posterior surface of the body of the hyoid bo

Perinatal primate parathyroid hormone metabolism.

Near-term fetal and neonatal parathyroid gland function has been studied in the Rhesus monkey. Fetal serum ionized calcium (Ca++) levels are significantly greater than simultaneously obtained maternal levels. Fetal serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) was undetectable both in the basal state and in association with EDTA-induced fetal hypocalcemia. Induced maternal hypocalcemia was associated with increased maternal serum PTH levels and no change in fetal basal serum Ca++ or PTH levels. Only a minimal decrease in simian neonatal serum Ca++ occurred over the first 48 h of life. Normal adult levels of

PALEOGENESIS AND PALEO-EPIDEMIOLOGY OF PRIMATE MALARIA.

The Haemosporidia, which comprise the malaria parasites, have probably evolved from Coccidia of the intestinal epithelium of the vertebrate host by adaptation first to some tissues of the internal organs and then to life in the circulating cells of the blood. The present opinion is that, among the malaria parasites of primates, the genus Hepatocystis and the "quartan group" of plasmodia are the most ancestral, followed by the "tertian group"; from the evolutionary viewpoint the subgenus Laverania is probably the most recent.Studies recently completed and research in hand on malaria parasites of

The Primate Welfare INdicators project (PWIN): For an objective and standardised welfare assessment of non-human primates used in research.

Considering the welfare of animals used in research is crucial for both the validity of the results obtained and for the social acceptance of animal research. In Europe, the majority of the 5,784 primates currently used for scientific purposes are macaques (Macaca fascicularis and M. mulatta). Inadequate housing conditions can lead to various physiological and behavioural alterations that indicate poor welfare and can impact upon the quality of the data collected. Although there are a number of documents that summarise scientific knowledge on welfare issues and describe the basic needs of maca

Seroprevalence of West Nile virus in nonhuman primates as related to mosquito abundance at two national primate research centers.

West Nile virus (WNV) surfaced as an emerging infectious disease in the northeastern United States in 1999, gradually spread across the continent, and is now endemic throughout North America. Outdoor-housed nonhuman primates at the Tulane National Primate Research Center (TNPRC) in Louisiana were documented with a relatively high prevalence (36%) of antibodies to West Nile virus. We examined the prevalence of antibodies to WNV in a nonhuman primate population housed in outdoor colonies at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center Field Station located near Atlanta, Georgia. We screened rhesu

Investigating primate densities and human-primate conflict in Tembaro Community Conserved Forest, Omo River Basin, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Human-primate conflict is a global conservation challenge, particularly in densely populated, low-income countries like Ethiopia. The Omo River Valley forest belt, spanning across the Omo River in Ethiopia to Lake Turkana in Kenya, harbors a diverse array of African primate species. An investigation on non-human primate population density and human primate conflict was carried out from January 2022 to December 2023 in the Tembaro Community Conserved Forest, Omo River basin, South Central Ethiopia. The population density of non-human primates was estimated using distance sampling me

Accidental injuries associated with nonhuman primate exposure at two regional primate research centers (USA): 1988-1993.

Although occupationally acquired zoonoses of nonhuman primates have been well documented, the epidemiology of work-related injuries associated with occupational exposure to nonhuman primates has not been studied. To investigate such injuries, we retrospectively reviewed injury records at one regional primate research center and distributed a self-administered, anonymous questionnaire to at-risk personnel at two centers. Records of bite, animal-inflicted scratch, needlestick, cut, and mucous membrane exposure injuries were reviewed at one center for the 5-year period 1988 to 1993 to determine i

The Visual Umwelt of primates and Hippocampal Representations of Space.

Evolution sculpts the brain's sensory adaptations. Because these adaptations differ markedly across species, it is challenging for humans to fully comprehend how other animals perceive the world. For a nocturnal mouse, the subjective sensory world-its Umwelt-is dominated by odors, sounds, and textures, with visual input playing a secondary role. In contrast, the Umwelt of a diurnal primate is primarily visual, composed of colors, shapes, and hues, with less emphasis on olfaction, audition, or tactile cues. In mice and rats, hippocampal place cells are activated when the animal occupies specifi

Allometry and Evolution of Neurocranial Narrowness Across Nonhuman Anthropoid Primates.

OBJECTIVES: Among anthropoid primates, small-bodied platyrrhines exhibit striking mediolateral narrowness of the neurocranium relative to larger-bodied platyrrhines. Body size allometry has been hypothesized to explain variation in neurocranial narrowness. However, interspecific catarrhine variation appears inconsistent with the proposed platyrrhine allometry. This study tested the relationship between body size and neurocranial narrowness across anthropoids to identify whether clade-specific allometries have evolved. We further estimated neurocranial narrowness in anthropoid ancestors to dete
