Variable sequencing is actively maintained in a well learned motor skill.

Variation in sequencing of actions occurs in many natural behaviors, yet how such variation is maintained is poorly understood. We investigated maintenance of sequence variation in adult Bengalese finch song, a learned skill with rendition-to-rendition variation in the sequencing of discrete syllables (i.e., syllable "b" might transition to "c" with 70% probability and to "d" with 30% probability). We found that probabilities of transitions ordinarily remain stable but could be modified by delivering aversive noise bursts following one transition (e.g., "b→c") but not the alternative (e.g., "b

Uncertainty-aware deep learning in healthcare: A scoping review.

Mistrust is a major barrier to implementing deep learning in healthcare settings. Entrustment could be earned by conveying model certainty, or the probability that a given model output is accurate, but the use of uncertainty estimation for deep learning entrustment is largely unexplored, and there is no consensus regarding optimal methods for quantifying uncertainty. Our purpose is to critically evaluate methods for quantifying uncertainty in deep learning for healthcare applications and propose a conceptual framework for specifying certainty of deep learning predictions. An Automatic Method for Locating Positions and their Colors Important for Classifying Genders in Retinal Fundus Images by Deep Learning Models.

This paper proposes an automatic method to identify important positions and their color features in retinal fundus images for gender classification using deep learning. The proposed method consists of MALCC (Model Analysis by Local Color Characteristics) and U-test. By partitioning each YCbCr image in the dataset into blocks and randomly masking them, the deep learning model predicts gender probabilities. Multiple regression analysis for the probabilities and masked blocks identifies significant blocks and colors, which are visualized in a Total Colormap. The Cr and Cb values of these blocks a

Genetic Algorithm-Optimized support vector machine for MRI-based multiple sclerosis diagnosis from white matter lesion features.

This study evaluates a genetic algorithm-assisted support vector machine (GA-SVM) framework for multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis using a publicly available dataset (n=709; 370 MS, 339 controls) comprising five pre-extracted white matter lesion features. Model performance was assessed using repeated nested stratified 10×5 cross-validation, with hyperparameter optimization confined to inner training folds and results reported from aggregated out-of-fold predictions. The tuned RBF-SVM achieved AUC=0.993, accuracy=0.987, sensitivity=1.000, specificity=0.973, precision=0.976, and F1-score=0.988 at

Intrusion Detection System Using Deep Neural Network for In-Vehicle Network Security.

A novel intrusion detection system (IDS) using a deep neural network (DNN) is proposed to enhance the security of in-vehicular network. The parameters building the DNN structure are trained with probability-based feature vectors that are extracted from the in-vehicular network packets. For a given packet, the DNN provides the probability of each class discriminating normal and attack packets, and, thus the sensor can identify any malicious attack to the vehicle. As compared to the traditional artificial neural network applied to the IDS, the proposed technique adopts recent advances in deep le

Deep survival modeling to predict future cognitive impairment in unimpaired adults.

BACKGROUND: Predicting Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related cognitive impairment (CI) among cognitively normal (CN) adults enables meaningful disease modification through early intervention and enrichment of clinical trials. METHODS: A deep survival model is trained to predict CI conversion risk in 1415 CN adults from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center. Converters' (N = 212) and non-converters' (N = 1203) baseline clinical measures and magnetic resonance images are used to estimate their conversion probability up to 22 years after baseline observation. RESULTS: After 20-fold cross-vali

Neural correlates of the divergence of instrumental probability distributions.

Flexible action selection requires knowledge about how alternative actions impact the environment: a "cognitive map" of instrumental contingencies. Reinforcement learning theories formalize this map as a set of stochastic relationships between actions and states, such that for any given action considered in a current state, a probability distribution is specified over possible outcome states. Here, we show that activity in the human inferior parietal lobule correlates with the divergence of such outcome distributions-a measure that reflects whether discrimination between alternative actions in

Probability Distortion Depends on Choice Sequence in Rhesus Monkeys.

Humans and other primates share many decision biases, among them our subjective distortion of objective probabilities. When making choices between uncertain rewards we typically treat probabilities nonlinearly: overvaluing low probabilities of reward and undervaluing high ones. A growing body of evidence, however, points to a more flexible pattern of distortion than the classical inverse-S one, highlighting the effect of experimental conditions in shifting the weight assigned to probabilities, such as task feedback, learning, and attention. Here we investigated the role of sequence structure (

Research on Teaching Resource Recommendation Algorithm Based on Deep Learning and Cognitive Diagnosis.

With the increasing abundance of network teaching resources, the recommendation technology based on network is becoming more and more mature. There are differences in the effect of recommendation, which leads to great differences in the effect of recommendation algorithms for teaching resources. The existing teaching resource recommendation algorithm either takes insufficient consideration of the students' personality characteristics, cannot well distinguish the students' users through the students' personality, and pushes the same teaching resources or considers the student user personality n

Multi-Scale Time-Series Kernel-Based Learning Method for Brain Disease Diagnosis.

The functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a noninvasive technique for studying brain activity, such as brain network analysis, neural disease automated diagnosis and so on. However, many existing methods have some drawbacks, such as limitations of graph theory, lack of global topology characteristic, local sensitivity of functional connectivity, and absence of temporal or context information. In addition to many numerical features, fMRI time series data also cover specific contextual knowledge and global fluctuation information. Here, we propose multi-scale time-series kernel-based l

Dual-channel hard negative sample generation for graph contrastive learning.

Graph Contrastive Learning (GCL) has demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in representation learning for graph-structured data. However, most existing GCL methods have two issues regarding the low-quality of negative samples. Firstly, most simple negative samples are semantically invalid and fail to provide discriminative signals. Secondly, false negative samples, which are caused by indiscriminate processing methods, may degrade the overall performance of the model. To this end, we propose a novel method called Dual-Channel Hard Negative Sample Generation for Graph Contrastive Learning (DCGC

The Effects of Individualized Arousal on Recognition Memory of Words.

Emotional information often modulates recognition memory, but the relative roles of arousal and valence remain debated, partly because many studies rely on normative emotion categories rather than individualized affective experience. This study examined whether post-test individualized arousal and valence ratings were associated with recognition-confidence responses to emotional Chinese words and whether the learning task influenced later recognition. Forty participants studied neutral, positive, and negative words under semantic-judgment and recognition-judgment learning conditions. After a 2

Rats bred for helplessness exhibit positive reinforcement learning deficits which are not alleviated by an antidepressant dose of the MAO-B inhibitor deprenyl.

Principles of negative reinforcement learning may play a critical role in the etiology and treatment of depression. We examined the integrity of positive reinforcement learning in congenitally helpless (cH) rats, an animal model of depression, using a random ratio schedule and a devaluation-extinction procedure. Furthermore, we tested whether an antidepressant dose of the monoamine oxidase (MAO)-B inhibitor deprenyl would reverse any deficits in positive reinforcement learning. We found that cH rats (n=9) were impaired in the acquisition of even simple operant contingencies, such as a fixed in

Dietary micronutrients, whole food patterns, and restless legs syndrome in coronary heart disease: A dual dietary profiling machine learning analysis using NHANES data.

BACKGROUND: The relationships between dietary patterns and restless legs syndrome (RLS) risk in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) are poorly understood. This study aimed to identify dietary factors associated with RLS risk in this specific population. METHODS: We analyzed NHANES data (2005-2018) using two complementary dietary representations: micronutrient profiles and food-group profiles derived from the MyPyramid Equivalents Database linked to NHANES dietary recalls. Six machine-learning models were developed using Boruta for feature selection and SMOTE to address class imbalance.

Limitations of the UNAIDS 90-90-90 metrics: a simulation-based comparison of cross-sectional and longitudinal metrics for the HIV care continuum.

OBJECTIVES: The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) 90-90-90 and other cross-sectional metrics can lead to potentially counterintuitive conclusions when used to evaluate health systems' performance. This study demonstrates how time and population dynamics impact UNAIDS 90-90-90 metrics in comparison with a longitudinal analogue. DESIGN: A simplified simulation representing a hypothetical population was used to estimate and compare inference from UNAIDS 90-90-90 metrics and longitudinal metrics based on Kaplan-Meier-estimated 2-year probability of transition between stages. Sensitivity to reward and punishment in major depressive disorder: effects of rumination and of single versus multiple experiences.

In the current study, we examined the postulation that rumination makes it difficult for depressed individuals to learn the exact probability that different stimuli will be associated with punishment. To do so, we induced rumination or distraction in depressed and never-depressed participants and then measured punishment and reward sensitivity with a probabilistic selection task. In this task, participants first learn the probability that different stimuli will be associated with reward and punishment. During a subsequent test phase in which novel combinations of stimuli are presented, partici
