Neural correlates of the divergence of instrumental probability distributions.

Flexible action selection requires knowledge about how alternative actions impact the environment: a "cognitive map" of instrumental contingencies. Reinforcement learning theories formalize this map as a set of stochastic relationships between actions and states, such that for any given action considered in a current state, a probability distribution is specified over possible outcome states. Here, we show that activity in the human inferior parietal lobule correlates with the divergence of such outcome distributions-a measure that reflects whether discrimination between alternative actions in

Experts and national consultants' recommendations regarding management of patients treated for migraine with comorbid depression. Epidemiology. Pathomechanism. Comorbidity. Part 1.

Coexistence of migraine and depression is a significant clinical problem. Health examination surveys indicate that patients who suffer from migraine are more likely to develop depression than the general population. The inverse relationship is also observed. The etiopathogenesis of both migraine and depression is not fully understood and is probably multifactorial and complex. Neurotransmission disorders, the immune system, and genetic predisposition are considered in the literature. The authors present etiopathogenetic theories of both diseases and their prevalence. They analyze data on the c

Isolated non-ascitic peritoneal carcinomatosis after robotic radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer: A case report.

Oncologic recurrence can occur after Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy. Prostate cancer metastasizes often in bones, however the peritoneum is infrequently targeted. Even more, peritoneal dissemination without any other organ involved especially the bones is very rare, only few cases are reported. Through the available literature we discuss about the presumed seeding theory leading to this atypical location for prostatic metastases. Here we report a case of isolated non-ascitic prostatic peritoneal metastases most probably due to iatrogenic spillage during surgery.

Optic nerve hypoplasia and colobomatous defects.

The case of a 21-year-old woman with an optic nerve head coloboma and optic pit in one eye, a hypoplastic optic nerve head in the second eye, and a small retinochoroidal coloboma in each eye is presented. The probable etiology is some unknown insult involving several ocular embryonic structures and occurring during the 11-mm to 20-mm stage of development. The occurrence of these multiple anomalies in the same patient lends further support to the theory that optic disc colobomas and optic nerve hypoplasia represent a spectrum of developmental anomalies of the optic nerve.

The ischium and hip extensor mechanism in human evolution.

Although it is commonly stated that the ischia of the late Pliocence-early Pleistocene hominid fossils are long and ape-like, new interpretations show this view to be falacious. An important new theory proposed by Robinson concludes that the gracile form of early hominid was an efficient biped, but the robust form was a less efficient biped and was adapted for tree climbing. Interpretation of the ischium is crucial to this idea. The present study shows that (1) the gracile and robust australopithecine ischia had similar relative lenths and (2) that the hamstring mechanism was probably very sim

Examination of the gamma equilibrium point hypothesis when applied to single degree of freedom movements performed with different inertial loads.

One of the theories of human motor control is the gamma Equilibrium Point Hypothesis. It is an attractive theory since it offers an easy control scheme where the planned trajectory shifts monotionically from an initial to a final equilibrium state. The feasibility of this model was tested by reconstructing the virtual trajectory and the stiffness profiles for movements performed with different inertial loads and examining them. Three types of movements were tested: passive movements, targeted movements, and repetitive movements. Each of the movements was performed with five different inertial

[Depression and inflammation in rheumatic diseases].

It is known that the prevalence of depression in rheumatologic patients is higher than in the general population. Socioeconomic factors are not a sufficient explanation of mood disorder in these patients. Symptoms reported by patients with chronic inflammatory diseases resemble changes defined as "sickness behavior". Mood disorders among somatic patients could be explained by disturbances of the immune system according to the monoaminergic theory of depression. Inflammatory factors such as IL-1 (interleukin-1), IL-2 (interleukin-2), IL-6 (interleukin-6), TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor α), and IF

Duane's retraction syndrome.

Duane's retraction syndrome (DRS) has been a recognized clinical entity for nearly a century. It is a clinically well described ocular disorder consisting of retraction of the globe with narrowing of the lid fissure in attempted adduction, frequent abduction deficiency with variable limitation to adduction, and upshoot and/or downshoot of the affected eye on adduction. Among strabismus patients the incidence of DRS is probably not more than 5%. Most cases are sporadic, but familial cases have been estimated at 10% by most authors. Numerous theories concerning the etiology and pathogenesis of D

Integrating social cognitive theory with machine learning to predict MSM-women sexual behavior: a multicenter random forest model development study in China.

Understanding and predicting sexual behavior patterns through the lens of Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) is essential for identifying behavioral bridges that facilitate HIV transmission. MSM who engage in sexual activity with women (MSM-W) represent a critical yet underexplored subgroup in China. However, existing studies lack theory-driven predictive frameworks that explicitly integrate psychological mechanisms with robust analytics. This study aimed to develop and validate an SCT-guided machine-learning model to predict MSM-W behavior and to evaluate its discriminatory and calibration perform

Statistics in Motion: Does the Infant Motor System Predict Actions Based on Their Transitional Probability?

Motor theories of action prediction propose that our neural motor system combines prior knowledge about action outcomes with current sensory input to predict other people's behavior. This knowledge can be acquired through observational experience, more specifically statistical learning. Recently, it has been shown that infants can detect in a stream of actions two actions that follow each other deterministically and that their motor system uses this knowledge to predict upcoming actions. However, real-life actions are more complex: actions rarely follow one another with 100% probability, certa

Evidence for vascular and enzymatic events in the pathophysiology of acute laminitis: which pathway is responsible for initiation of this process in horses?

To date, there is a substantial amount of data to support the hypotheses that vascular and enzymatic changes are ongoing in experimental laminitis. Furthermore, there is substantial in vitro evidence that the enzymatic changes weaken the dermo-epidermal attachments leading to mechanical failure of the hoof-bone interface of the equine digit. However, investigators of both the vascular and enzymatic theories have, to date, been unable to substantiate the effects of these pathophysiological changes in vivo on laminar tissues of horses afflicted with experimentally induced or naturally acquired l

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms in COVID-19 Survivors 6 Months After Hospital Discharge: An Application of the Conservation of Resource Theory.

COVID-19 survivors who had acute respiratory symptoms might experience prolonged post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to further rehabilitation, somatic symptoms and related distress. The conservation of resource (COR) theory is a well-developed theory to understand how people develop PTSD symptoms in traumatic events. The current study aimed to examine the potential factors of PTSD symptoms and interrelationships among this factors among COVID-19 survivors based on the COR theory. This cross-sectional telephone survey enrolled 199 COVID-19 patients (Mean age = 42.7; 53.3% females) 6 mont

Etiological relationships between choledochal cyst and anomalous junction of the pancreaticobiliary ductal system.

The etiology of choledochal cyst has been investigated by clinicians and pathologists primarily of Germany, Austria, United States, United Kingdom, and Japan from the end of the last century, but Japanese investigators contributed greatly to the study of the relationship between choledochal cyst and anomalous junction of the pancreaticobiliary ductal system. Heid (1893) is considered to be the first to document choledochal cyst associated with anomalous pancreaticobiliary junction, but it was probably Kozumi et al. (1916) that first evaluated anomalous junction in relation to the etiology of c

Information geometry aided UAV cluster cooperative positioning method with LEO satellite system.

Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites are characterized by high received signal power and high signal propagation rate, and their pseudorange accuracy far exceeds traditional navigation constellations. However, the current LEO satellite's beam coverage is small, resulting in a single UAV only able to receive 1-2 satellite beams, rendering positioning impossible. To address this issue, this paper proposes a cooperative positioning method for UAV clusters. This method uses the ranging information between UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) clusters for pseudorange shifting. Considering the asynchronous inf

Modularity limits the spatial propagation of disturbance in experimental seagrass networks.

Understanding how habitat structure affects disturbance dynamics among connected patches is a central issue in ecology. Network theory predicts that a modular arrangement of habitat patches can limit the spread of local perturbations, reducing the probability of large-scale impacts. We performed a field experiment to test whether modular networks were more resistant to the spread of algal turfs compared to random networks within meadows of the seagrass Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile. Networks were created by manipulating the canopy of P. oceanica to promote the vegetative propagation of algal

Describing reasons for loneliness among older people in Nigeria.

The rural-urban migration of family members often leads to a higher probability of older people living alone, and minimizes family/social networks, which increases old age loneliness. In this study, we describe the existence of loneliness among older adults in Nigeria and its factors, aiming to inform the development of interventions for reducing old age loneliness. We adopted a descriptive phenomenological approach to the qualitative design, purposefully selecting and conducting face-to-face interviews with 12 older adults aged 58-88. We analyzed the data using a Thematic Analysis. Results of

A fuzzy-classifier system to distinguish respiratory patterns evolving after diaphragm paralysis in the cat.

We applied the fuzzy "k-nearest neighbor" (k-NN) classifier of the pattern recognition theory to fathom the abnormal way of breathing resulting from diaphragm paralysis and to distinguish the dominant component, tidal or frequency, of the breathing pattern on which ventilatory compensation relies in such a pathological state. We addressed this issue in the experimental model of diaphragm paralysis as a result of bilateral phrenicotomy in anesthetized, spontaneously breathing cats. Of several variables recorded, we selected two features, minute ventilation and arterial CO(2) tension, that were

Disclosure of traumas and psychosomatic processes.

Results from a series of studies are summarized in support of a general theory of inhibition and psychosomatics. According to this view, to inhibit thoughts, feelings, or behaviors is associated with physiological work. In the short term, inhibition results in increased autonomic nervous system activity. Over time, inhibition serves as a cumulative stressor that increases the probability of psychosomatic disease. Actively avoiding thoughts and feelings surrounding a trauma and/or not discussing a trauma is a particularly insidious form of inhibition. The results from recent surveys and experim

Single-trace fragility theory of memory dynamics.

In single-trace fragility theory, forgetting is produced by two factors, time and interference. Memory traces are assumed to have two partially coupled dynamic properties, strength and fragility. Strength determines the probability of correct recall and recognition, while fragility determines the susceptibility of the trace to the time-decay process but not to the interference process. Consolidation is assumed to be a continual reduction in the fragility of the memory trace rather than any change in strength or availability. Decreasing fragility accounts for the continually decreasing forgetti
