Coffee consumption and the risk of incident gastric cancer--A meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies.

As several epidemiological studies on the association of coffee consumption with gastric cancer risk have produced inconsistent results, this meta-analysis was designed to synthesize current evidence of this potential relationship. We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library up to September 2014 to retrieve relevant articles. Prospective cohort studies were included if the relative risks (RRs) or hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for gastric cancer according to coffee consumption were reported. Fixed- or random-effects models were used based on heterogeneity. The search

Body mass index and risk of knee osteoarthritis: systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies.

OBJECTIVES: Obesity is suggested to be a risk factor for knee osteoarthritis (OA). This meta-analysis aimed to examine the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and the risk of knee OA in published prospective studies. DESIGN: Meta-analysis. STUDIES REVIEWED: An extensive literature review was performed, and relevant studies published in English were retrieved from the computerised databases MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane. METHODS: The effect estimate (RR or HR) and its 95% CI are investigated on the basis of the evaluation of differences of knee OR risk in overweight or obesity versus t

Prospective cohort studies of association between family history of liver cancer and risk of liver cancer.

Uncertainty remains on the relationship between a family history of liver cancer and liver cancer risk in prospective cohort studies in a general population. Thus, we examined this association in 133,014 participants in the Shanghai Women's and Men's Health Studies. Family history of liver cancer was categorized through dichotomous and proportional score approaches. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were derived using the Cox proportional hazards models with adjustment for potential confounders. A meta-analysis of observational studies through December 2013 on liver cancer

Body mass index and biliary tract disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between body mass index (BMI, kg/m(2)) and incidence of biliary tract disease. METHODS: We performed a systematic review and a meta-analysis of prospective studies by searching the database of PubMed and EMBASE published up to December 31, 2013. Outcome of interest was disease of biliary tract system (gallbladder, extrahepatic bile duct and Ampullar of Vater). We used a random-effects model to combine the study-specific relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) from 22 prospective studies. We examined whether BMI was associated with a h

Orthostatic hypotension and the risk of congestive heart failure: a meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: Orthostatic hypotension (OH) has been related to the increased risk of future congestive heart failure (CHF) events. However, the overall quantitative estimate of predictive ability of OH for CHF has not been determined. We therefore performed a meta-analysis to investigate the association between OH and incident CHF. METHODS: Prospective cohort studies relevant to the aim of the study were identified by searching of Medline and Embase databases up to December 25, 2012 without restrictions and by reviewing the reference lists from retrieved articles. RESULTS: A total of 51270 sub

Factors associated with development of excessive fatness in children and adolescents: a review of prospective studies.

The purpose of this review was to examine the factors that predict the development of excessive fatness in children and adolescents. Medline, Web of Science and PubMed were searched to identify prospective cohort studies that evaluated the association between several variables (e.g. physical activity, sedentary behaviour, dietary intake and genetic, physiological, social cognitive, family and peer, school and community factors) and the development of excessive fatness in children and adolescents (5-18 years). Sixty-one studies met the eligibility criteria and were included. There is evidence t

Prospective studies of total and ionized serum calcium in relation to incident and fatal ovarian cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Biological markers that could aid in the detection of ovarian cancer are urgently needed. Many ovarian cancers express parathyroid hormone-related protein, which acts to raise calcium levels in serum. Thus, we hypothesized that high serum calcium levels might predict ovarian cancer. METHODS: We examined the associations between total and ionized serum calcium and ovarian cancer mortality in the Third National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES III) using Cox proportional hazard models. We then examined the associations of serum calcium with incident ovarian cancer in a second pros

Rotating night shift work and risk of type 2 diabetes: two prospective cohort studies in women.

BACKGROUND: Rotating night shift work disrupts circadian rhythms and has been associated with obesity, metabolic syndrome, and glucose dysregulation. However, its association with type 2 diabetes remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate this association in two cohorts of US women. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We followed 69,269 women aged 42-67 in Nurses' Health Study I (NHS I, 1988-2008), and 107,915 women aged 25-42 in NHS II (1989-2007) without diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer at baseline. Participants were asked how long they had worked rotating night shifts (defined as at le

Treatment of snakebite in Australia: the current evidence base and questions requiring collaborative multicentre prospective studies.

Despite the wealth of anecdotes and case reports there are fundamental questions of management of snakebite in Australia that remain unresolved or for which the current evidence is limited. The efficacy in the field, potential limitations and possibility of improvements in pressure immobilisation first aid need objective studies in humans. Optimal bandage sizes, stretch and pressure for different sized limbs need further evaluation, as does the use of pressure pads. Better definitions of specific clinical envenoming syndromes attributable to individual snake species are required, including elu

[Defibrination syndrome during acute pancreatitis: 6 cases. Prospective studies of coagulation in 41 patients (author's transl)].

Studies of coagulation were performed prospectively in 41 patients with mild to moderately severe acute pancreatitis. Six patients (15%) presented with coagulation data suggestive of defibrination; two of them had clinical signs of bleeding. No other cause than pancreatitis was found in these 6 patients to account for coagulation abnormalities. Comparing the patients who presented defibrination to those who did not, no difference was observed in clinical course and admission values of serum amylase, fibrinogen, urea, calcium, glucose, transaminase levels, white blood cell count and arterial pa

Prospective study on immune function in renal transplant patients during perioperative period: A prospective cohort study.

Delayed graft function (DGF) is a type of acute renal failure that is closely linked to the immune system. The objective of this study is to investigate immune trends during the perioperative period of renal transplantation and compare the variations between patients with DGF and immediate graft function (IGF). A total of 48 kidney transplant patients were enrolled. Parameters including stimulated adenosine triphosphatase concentrations (sATP), nonstimulated ATP concentrations, white blood cells, and lymphocyte count were assessed. Patients were categorized into the DGF or IGF group. Clinical

[Clinical and sonographic study of the infant hip. A prospective study].

In 1985 a clinical and sonographic study in 693 children was done. The instability and the limitation of the abduction of the hip joint proved to be the most important clinical signs. The weight of the newborn and the time of birth had no influence on the hip configuration. The importance of the sonographic and clinical examination was demonstrated in the follow up. In the ultrasonic examination qualitative signs rather than quantitative measurements were preferred in routine diagnosis.

Handgrip strength-a risk indicator for future fractures in the general population: findings from a prospective study and meta-analysis of 19 prospective cohort studies.

Evolving debate suggests that handgrip strength, a measure of muscular strength, might be associated with the risk of fractures; however, the evidence is conflicting. We aimed to assess the association of handgrip strength with the risk of fracture in the general population. Handgrip strength, measured using a dynamometer, was assessed at baseline in a population-based sample of 853 men and women aged 61-73 years in the Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease prospective cohort. Hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated for incident fractures. Incident fractures (hip, humera

Harmonization, data management, and statistical issues related to prospective multicenter studies in Ankylosing spondylitis (AS): Experience from the Prospective Study Of Ankylosing Spondylitis (PSOAS) cohort.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is characterized by inflammation of the spine and sacroiliac joints causing pain and stiffness and, in some patients, ultimately new bone formation, and progressive joint ankyloses. The classical definition of AS is based on the modified New York (mNY) criteria. Limited data have been reported regarding data quality assurance procedure for multicenter or multisite prospective cohort of patients with AS. Since 2002, 1272 qualified AS patients have been enrolled from five sites (4 US sites and 1 Australian site) in the Prospective Study Of Ankylosing Spondylitis (PSOA

[Etiological study of gynecomastia: results of a prospective study and recommendations].

BACKGROUND: Gynecomastia can be physiological or pathological. A limited study of gynecomastia is recommended during puberty and in the elderly, ages in which gynecomastia is usually considered physiological. Other authors suggest that this condition should be studied when it is painful, rapidly growing, of recent onset, when its diameter is more than 4 cm and when is associated to testicular masses. AIM: To investigate the causes of gynecomastia and to evaluate the above mentioned criteria to exclude pathological conditions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Prospective study of 117 patients aged 10 to

Subclinical atherosclerosis and sarcopenia: A prospective study.

The relationship between subclinical carotid artery atherosclerosis and sarcopenia has not been clarified in many respects. In this study, the possible relationship between composite clinical sarcopenia indices and various levels of subclinical atherosclerosis parameters was revisited. The Ishii score (Ishii-max and Ishii-average) was used to determine sarcopenia in 257 prospectively recruited healthy controls and patients with neurological diseases (age: 65 ± 10 years, 50% female). Carotid artery distensibility indices (stress, strain, modulus, stiffness, and distensibility), intima-media thi
