Using a digital platform to establish odontometric variation based on race, gender and Angle classification.

UNLABELLED: Orthodontists often encounter significant clinical challenges in the finishing stages of treatment due to a disproportion in interarch tooth size relationships. Despite the increasing presence of digital technology and concomitant focus on customized treatment approaches, there is a gap in the knowledge of how generating tooth size data using digital versus traditional methods may impact our treatment regime. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the prevalence of tooth size discrepancies using digital models and a digitally based cast analysis in our cohort based on (i) Angle's

Food Insecurity Among Older Adults with a History of Incarceration.

We examined the association between history of incarceration (HOI) and food insecurity (FI) among older adults using pooled data from 12,702 respondents aged 51+ who participated in the 2012 and 2014 waves of the Health and Retirement Study. In our sample, 12.8% of participants reported FI. Those with a HOI had an increased odds of FI (OR 1.83; 95% CI 1.52-2.21). Race/ethnicity moderated the association between HOI and FI. The positive and statistically significant association was concentrated among Non-Hispanic Black and Non-Hispanic White participants. No statistically significant associatio

The potential of multilayer green roofs for stormwater management in urban area under semi-arid Mediterranean climate conditions.

Different low impact development measures have been proposed to make cities more flood-resilient, and recent literature is paying great attention to the evaluation of their direct benefits in terms of flood risk mitigation and the numerous co-benefits that they may offer. This study describes an experimental prototype of a technologically advanced multilayer green roof installed in a Mediterranean urban area (i.e., Palermo, Italy) and explores the results of an analysis of data collected over a one-year monitoring period by a complex sensors network. Multilayer green roofs, or "blue-green" roo

Re-examining the utility and validity of benign ethnic neutropenia: A narrative literature review.

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a narrative literature review of published evidence documenting racial differences in white blood cells (WBCs) resulting in the legitimization of benign ethnic neutropenia (BEN) as a diagnosis. METHOD: A search of English-language U.S.-based articles was undertaken using the following electronic databases: Medline (1860 to 1990); PsycINFO (1860 to 1990); and EMBASE (1860 to 1990), which resulted in a total of eight studies. A narrative literature review of the eight studies was conducted to assess how race was utilized in the study methods. RESULTS: Of the eight studies

UV Exposure and the Risk of Keratinocyte Carcinoma in Skin of Color: A Systematic Review.

IMPORTANCE: Ultraviolet radiation exposure is an important modifiable risk factor for keratinocyte carcinoma (KC) in fair-skinned non-Hispanic White populations; however, the evidence for this relationship in darker-skinned populations is less certain. OBJECTIVE: To assess and synthesize the published data concerning the association between UV exposure and the risk of KC in individuals with skin of color. EVIDENCE REVIEW: PubMed, Cochrane, and Web of Science databases were searched from database origin through January 2022. Studies deemed eligible included UV exposure as a risk factor for KC

Ethnic Differences in the Smoking-related Risk of Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The association between smoking and inflammatory bowel disease [IBD] relies on old meta-analyses including exclusively non-Jewish White populations. Uncertainty persists regarding the role of smoking in other ethnicities. METHODS: We systematically searched Medline/PubMed, Embase, and Scopus for studies examining tobacco smoking and the risk of developing IBD, ie, Crohn's disease [CD] or ulcerative colitis [UC]. Two authors independently extracted study data and assessed each study's risk of bias. We examined heterogeneity and small-study effect, and calculated summary es

Applying the risk principle to optimize accuracy and equity in correctional risk assessment: Results From a Simulation.

As the use of risk assessments for correctional populations has grown, so has concern that these instruments exacerbate existing racial and ethnic disparities. While much of the attention arising from this concern has focused on how algorithms are designed, relatively little consideration has been given to how risk assessments are used. To this end, the present study tests whether application of the risk principle would help preserve predictive accuracy while, at the same time, mitigate disparities. Using a sample of 9,529 inmates released from Minnesota prisons who had been assessed multiple

Pushing Back Against the Microaggression Pushback in Academic Psychology: Reflections on a Concept-Creep Paradox.

Echoing the 1960s, the 2020s opened with racial tensions boiling. The Black Lives Matter movement is energized, issuing pleas to listen to Black voices regarding day-to-day discrimination and expressing frustrations over the slow progress of social justice. However, psychological scientists have published only several opinion pieces on racial microaggressions, primarily objections, and strikingly little empirical data. Here I document three trends in psychology that coincide with the academic pushback against microaggressions: concept-creep concerns, especially those regarding expanded notions

Ecology-driven stereotypes override race stereotypes.

Why do race stereotypes take the forms they do? Life history theory posits that features of the ecology shape individuals' behavior. Harsh and unpredictable ("desperate") ecologies induce fast strategy behaviors such as impulsivity, whereas resource-sufficient and predictable ("hopeful") ecologies induce slow strategy behaviors such as future focus. We suggest that individuals possess a lay understanding of ecology's influence on behavior, resulting in ecology-driven stereotypes. Importantly, because race is confounded with ecology in the United States, we propose that Americans' stereotypes a

Clinical manifestations of taeniasis in Taiwan aborigines.

From 1974 to 1989, a total of 24,500 aborigines at 67 villages in ten mountainous districts/towns in Taiwan were examined for the Taiwan Taenia infection and 12% were found to be infected. In order to define the clinical manifestations of taeniasis caused by the Taiwan Taenia, 1661 aborigines in ten mountainous districts were surveyed. The overall clinical rate was 76%. The clinical rate was highest among Atayal aborigines (81%), followed by Bunun (66%) and Yami (61%) aborgines and lowest among Ami aborigines (40%). Among 1153 infected people, 10% had passed gravid segments in the faeces for l

Racial disparities in gun violence: current evidence, an integrated cascading perspective, knowledge gaps, policy prescriptions.

At the intersection of public health and violence is the glaring disparity surrounding racial disparities in gun violence. This mini-review summarizes what is known about racial disparities in gun violence, identifies some of the key theoretical frameworks advanced to explain the disparities and located them in an integrated cascading perspective, identifies several research gaps, and concludes by outlining a series of future research issues.

MicroRNAs and Cancer Racial Disparities.

Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Despite various efforts to reduce cancer mortality, such as decreasing tobacco use, improving early detection and prevention methods, and enhancing cancer care and treatments, certain racial and ethnic groups continue to experience higher cancer incidence and mortality rates, along with shorter survival compared to other groups. Several factors, including socioeconomic status, environmental influences, diet, and behavior, contribute to these racial disparities. More importantly, scientists have identified a genetic basis for these ob

A Systematic Review of Race or Ethnicity and Risk of Death in Spina Bifida in the United States.

ObjectiveWe performed a systematic review of studies of mortality risk in spina bifida by race or ethnicity to determine if risks were relatively greater in Black or in Hispanic people with spina bifida than in White people in most studies.MethodsWe included studies of myelomeningocele that were peer-reviewed, recently published (1983-2022), and from the United States. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, and Scopus. We used PRISMA 2020 Guidelines and Cochrane Handbook for Interventions GRADE "confidence in certainty of quality of evidence" to evaluate studies. We assessed duplication of data sources
