Knowledge of outdoor workers on the effects of natural UV radiation and methods of protection against exposure.

The most important but influenceable risk factor in the development of skin cancer is the unprotected exposure to solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation. In order to assure adequate and effective protection against UV exposure, a level of knowledge about solar radiation and its effects is required. The objective of this study was to assess the knowledge of workers in outdoor professions on the effects of natural UV radiation and methods of protection against exposure. Forty outdoor workers were given a standardized questionnaire designed to ascertain their level of knowledge. The majority of partici

Protection from solar simulated radiation-induced DNA damage in cultured human fibroblasts by three commercially available sunscreens.

Exposure to solar radiation can produce both acute and chronic changes in the skin, including sunburn, edema, immunosuppression, premature skin aging, and skin cancer. At the cellular level, solar radiation can produce adverse structural and functional changes in membrane proteins and lipids and in chromosomal and mitochondrial DNA. The increasing awareness of these adverse effects has led the public to demand better photoprotection. In this study, the alkaline comet assay was used to evaluate the photoprotective effects of three commercially available sunscreens at sun protection factors (SPF

Cellular and humoral immune responses and protection against schistosomes induced by a radiation-attenuated vaccine in chimpanzees.

The radiation-attenuated Schistosoma mansoni vaccine is highly effective in rodents and primates but has never been tested in humans, primarily for safety reasons. To strengthen its status as a paradigm for a human recombinant antigen vaccine, we have undertaken a small-scale vaccination and challenge experiment in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). Immunological, clinical, and parasitological parameters were measured in three animals after multiple vaccinations, together with three controls, during the acute and chronic stages of challenge infection up to chemotherapeutic cure. Vaccination induce

Sunscreens and vitamin E provide some protection to the skin immune system from solar-simulated UV radiation.

Previous studies have indicated that sunscreens designed to protect from erythema do not adequately prevent immunosuppression. Mice were irradiated with suberythemal doses of solar-simulated ultraviolet radiation (ssUVR) to assess the immunoprotective ability of sunscreens. Whereas C3H/HeJ and BALB/c mice had similar sensitivities to ssUVR-induced inflammation, C3H/HeJ mice were more sensitive to ssUVR-induced immunosuppression. Octyl dimethyl-p-aminobenzoic acid did not protect from immunosuppression and, thus, had an immune protection factor (IPF) of 1. 2-Ethylhexyl-p-methoxycinnamate and mi

Protective effect of prostaglandin E₁ on radiation-induced proliferative inhibition and apoptosis in keratinocytes and healing of radiation-induced skin injury in rats.

We examined the effects of prostaglandin E₁ (PGE₁) on radiation-induced proliferation inhibition and apoptosis in keratinocytes and healing of radiation-induced skin injury in a rat model. PGE₁ had a protective effect on radiation-induced growth inhibition in keratinocytes in vitro, but not in fibroblasts. Varying concentrations of PGE₁ were subcutaneously administered into the posterior neck region. X-irradiation at a dose of 20 Gy was administrated to the lower part of the back using a lead sheet with two holes 30 min to 1 h before or after the administration of PGE₁. Although X-irradiation

Radiation protection considerations for ultra-high dose rate proton beam FLASH research: consensus from multi-institutional experience.

The use of ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) radiation for radiotherapy could potentially improve outcomes for cancer patients by increasing healthy tissue sparing, known as the FLASH effect. As UHDR use expands in FLASH research and clinical translation, reassessing existing radiation safety programs is essential to determine whether UHDR beams introduce any new radiation safety requirements. This manuscript outlines the lessons learnt through investigations performed by members of the Varian FLASH forward consortium radiation protection working group. The information contained within is the consen

Metrnl in mitigating radiation enteritis via label-retaining cells protection by modulating the c-KIT-WNT pathway.

Currently, there exists no definitive standardized therapy for radiation enteritis. This study unveils Metrnl as a pivotal regulator of intestinal radioprotection through multi-dimensional single-cell profiling and mechanistic dissection. We first demonstrate that radiation dynamically reprograms Metrnl expression in a time-dependent manner, revealing its role as a radiation-responsive mediator. Crucially, Metrnl confers potent protection against radiation-induced intestinal injury through double mechanisms; Metrnl safeguards label-retaining cells (LRCs) rather than conventional Lgr5+ intestin

Development of an AR application for radiation protection optimisation education of medical staff in x-ray fluoroscopy.

Medical staff handling radiological equipment may be exposed to occupational radiation when assisting patients or performing fluoroscopy-guided procedures in radiological examinations. In this study, we developed a radiation protection education application using augmented reality (AR) to display the scattered radiation volume data during supine x-ray examinations, including x-ray fluoroscopy. This application allows real-time estimation of the scattered radiation distribution in the room and the radiation exposure of medical staff. The ratio of calculated values to measured values for scatter

The Potential of Ultraviolet Radiation Meters in Secondary Schools as a Sun Protection Intervention Mechanism for Adolescents.

The aim of this pilot study was to assess whether the installation of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) meters in secondary schools has the potential to improve adolescents' sun protection-related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours and reduce their exposure to UVR during school hours. Data were collected from students at two schools via online pre- and post-intervention surveys, measurement of sunscreen usage, polysulfone UVR exposure badges, and photographs of the schoolyards to assess hat and shade use. Several operational issues limited the quantity and quality of data that could be collected,

Use of expanders for bowel protection in pediatric pelvic tumor radiation therapy: 15 years of tolerance results.

PURPOSE: Bowel is often the dose-limiting organ in curative pelvic irradiation because of radiation enteritis when dose exceeds 40 to 45 Gy. To limit radiation enteritis, a silicone tissue-expander prothesis (STEP) connected to a subcutaneous self-sealing valve was prospectively used in children undergoing pelvic or abdominal radiation therapy. This study reports the 15-year long-term outcomes of this prospective series. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Between 1987 and 2008, 29 children from 3 Paris institutions received pelvic radiation therapy after surgical placement of a STEP in the pelvis. The me

Protection from experimental cerebral malaria with a single dose of radiation-attenuated, blood-stage Plasmodium berghei parasites.

BACKGROUND: Whole malaria parasites are highly effective in inducing immunity against malaria. Due to the limited success of subunit based vaccines in clinical studies, there has been a renewed interest in whole parasite-based malaria vaccines. Apart from attenuated sporozoites, there have also been efforts to use live asexual stage parasites as vaccine immunogens. METHODOLOGY AND RESULTS: We used radiation exposure to attenuate the highly virulent asexual blood stages of the murine malaria parasite P. berghei to a non-replicable, avirulent form. We tested the ability of the attenuated blood

Radiolytic degradation of herbicide 4-chloro-2-methyl phenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) by gamma-radiation for environmental protection.

Reversed-phase HPLC determination of the herbicide MCPA and its products of radiolytic degradation has been optimized. The radiolytic degradation was carried out using gamma-irradiation and was optimized in terms of irradiation dose and pH of irradiated MCPA solution. Decomposition of 100 ppm MCPA in pure solutions required irradiation with a 3 kGy dose. The main products of irradiation in the dose range up to 10-kGy were various phenolic compounds and carboxylic acids. The developed method was applied for treatment of industrial waste from production of MCPA. The 10-kGy dose was needed for de

Mentha piperita (Linn.) leaf extract provides protection against radiation induced chromosomal damage in bone marrow of mice.

Oral administration of M. piperita (1 g/kg body weight/day) before exposure to gamma radiation was found to be effective in protecting against the chromosomal damage in bone marrow of Swiss albino mice. Animals exposed to 8 Gy gamma radiation showed chromosomal aberrations in the form of chromatid breaks, chromosome breaks, centric rings, dicentrics, exchanges and acentric fragments. There was a significant increase in the frequency of aberrant cells at 6 hr after irradiation. Maximum aberrant cells were observed at 12 hr post-irradiation autopsy time. Further, the frequency of aberrant cells

Friend or Foe: Dietary Restriction and Its Protective Effects on Responses to Ionizing Radiation.

Dietary restriction (DR) has been extensively investigated for its capacity to extend lifespan and mitigate age-associated pathologies. In the context of ionizing radiation (IR), DR-implemented through caloric reduction, selective nutrient restriction, or fasting-based regimens-has emerged as a significant modulator of both cellular and systemic responses to radiation exposure. Growing evidence suggests that DR influences radiation outcomes in a highly context-dependent manner, exerting either protective or sensitizing effects depending on tissue type, metabolic status, timing of intervention,
