We report a rare case of bilateral retrocaval ureters associated with duplicated inferior renal cava. A 69-year-old woman was sent to our emergency room for abdominal pain. Multidetector computed tomogram with multiplanar reconstruction revealed duplicated inferior renal cavae and the bilateral ureters were positioned behind the duplicated inferior vena cava. To our knowledge, coexistence of bilateral retrocaval ureters and duplicated inferior renal cavae has not been reported in the literature.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of low-tube-voltage 90-kVp acquisition combined with advanced modeled iterative reconstruction algorithm (Admire) on radiation exposure, image quality, artifacts, and assessment of stenosis in carotid and intracranial CT angiography (CTA).
METHODS: Dual-energy CTA studies of 43 patients performed on a third-generation 192-slice dual-source CT were retrospectively evaluated. Intraindividual comparison of 90-kVp and linearly blended 120-kVp equivalent image series (M_0.6, 60% 90-kVp, 40% Sn-150-kVp) was performed. Contrast-to-noise and signal-to-noise ratios

For many orthopaedic, neurological, and oncological applications, an exact segmentation of the vertebral column including an identification of each vertebra is essential. However, although bony structures show high contrast in CT images, the segmentation and labelling of individual vertebrae is challenging. In this paper, we present a comprehensive solution for automatically detecting, identifying, and segmenting vertebrae in CT images. A framework has been designed that takes an arbitrary CT image, e.g., head-neck, thorax, lumbar, or whole spine, as input and provides a segmentation in form o

PURPOSE: To investigate the operation principles of the automatic tube current modulation (ATCM) of a modern GE healthcare CT scanner, and the impact of related settings on image quality and patient dose.
MATERIAL & METHODS: A dedicated phantom (Mercury 4.0) was scanned using two of the most frequently used clinical scanning protocols (chest and abdomen-pelvis). The preset protocol settings were used as starting points (reference conditions). Scan direction, scan mode (helical vs. axial), total beam width, tube potential (kVp), and ATCM settings were then modified individually to understand t

Diagnosis of vertebral deformation and fracture is a key issue in the management of osteoporosis. Vertebral morphometry is the key solution to assess these vertebral deformities, but it is a tedious operation for the rheumatologist. In this paper, we propose an automatic approach to localize vertebrae and determine the vertebral morphometry. Based on a local phase symmetry measure, our approach shows promising results even on poor quality images. This work was tested on 22 scans of conventional lateral X-rays radiographs and compared to the results obtained by a trained radiologist. It resulte

Dual-energy subtraction (DES) chest X-ray images (CXRs) are often affected by motion artifacts resulting from patients' voluntary or involuntary movements, even in clinical settings. Additionally, the mediastinum and upper abdominal regions in low-energy (LE) CXRs are susceptible to signal insufficiency due to inadequate input photon numbers. Current image processing techniques for removing motion artifacts and statistical noise from DES-CXRs are insufficient, and potential algorithms for these tasks remain largely unexplored. We propose a framework based on paired cycle-consistency adversaria

Recent ultrasound imaging evidence asserts that the diaphragm is an important multifunctional muscle to control breathing as well as stabilize the core and posture in humans. However, the validity and accuracy of ultrasound for the measurement of dynamic diaphragm movements during breathing and functional core activities have not been determined. The specific aim of this study was to validate the accuracy of ultrasound imaging measurements of diaphragm movements by concurrently comparing these measurements to the gold standard of radiographic imaging measurements. A total of 14 asymptomatic ad

Conebeam CT (CBCT) is an imaging technique that provides high-resolution, cross-sectional imaging in the fluoroscopy suite. In neuroradiology, CBCT has been used for various applications including temporal bone imaging and during spinal and cerebral angiography. Furthermore, CBCT has been shown to improve imaging of spinal CSF leaks during myelography. One drawback of CBCT is that images have a relatively high noise level. In this technical report, we describe the first application of a high-resolution convolutional neural network to denoise conebeam CT myelographic images. We show examples of

The purpose of this study is to present a framework for quantitative analysis of spinal curvature in 3D. In order to study the properties of such complex 3D structures, we propose two descriptors that capture the characteristics of spinal curvature in 3D. The descriptors are the geometric curvature (GC) and curvature angle (CA), which are independent of the orientation and size of spine anatomy. We demonstrate the two descriptors that characterize the spinal curvature in 3D on 30 computed tomography (CT) images of normal spine and on a scoliotic spine. The descriptors are determined from 3D ve

This paper presents a new method for modelling the spines of subjects and making accurate 3D measurements using standard radiologic systems without requiring calibration objects. The method makes use of the focal distance and statistical models for estimating the geometrical parameters of the system. A dataset of 32 subjects was used to assess this method. The results show small errors for the main clinical indices, such as an RMS error of 0.49° for the Cobb angle, 0.50° for kyphosis, 0.38° for lordosis, and 2.62mm for the spinal length. This method is the first to achieve this level of accura

To evaluate the feasibility of radiation dose reduction using model-based iterative reconstruction (MBIR) for evaluating the ureters and vasculature in a phantom, a tissue-equivalent CT dose phantom was scanned using a 64-channel CT scan-ner. Tubes of varying diameters filled with different dilutions of a contrast agent, simulating ureters or vessels, were inserted into the center of the phantom. Each combination was scanned using an existing renal protocol at 140 kVp or 120 kVp, yielding a display volumetric CT dose index (CTDIvol) of 24 mGy. The scans were repeated using reduced scan techniq

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) using an "on-board" x-ray imaging device integrated into a radiation therapy system has recently been made available for patient positioning, target localization, and adaptive treatment planning. One of the challenges for gantry mounted image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) systems is the slow acquisition of projections for cone-beam CT (CBCT), which makes them sensitive to any patient motion during the scans. Aiming at motion artifact reduction, four-dimensional CBCT (4D CBCT) techniques have been introduced, where a surrogate for the target's motion profi

The aim of this article is to review the major limitations in current mammography and to describe how these may be addressed by digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT). DBT is a novel imaging technology in which an x-ray fan beam sweeps in an arc across the breast, producing tomographic images and enabling the production of volumetric, three-dimensional (3D) data. It can reduce tissue overlap encountered in conventional two-dimensional (2D) mammography, and thus has the potential to improve detection of breast cancer, reduce the suspicious presentations of normal tissues, and facilitate accurate di

Purpose: Breast cancer can be cured if diagnosed early, with digital mammography which is one of the most effective imaging modalities for early detection. However mammogram images often come with low contrast, high background noises and artifacts, making diagnosis difficult. The purpose of this research is to preprocess mammogram images to improve results with a computer aided diagnosis system. The focus is on three preprocessing methods: a breast border segmentation method; a contrast enhancement method; and a pectoral muscle removal method. Methods: The proposed breast border extraction met

Pectus excavatum is among the most common major congenital anomalies of the chest wall whose correction can be performed via minimally invasive Nuss technique that places a pectus bar to elevate the sternum anteriorly. However, the size and bending of the pectus bar are manually modeled intraoperatively by trial-and-error. The procedure requires intense pain management in the months following surgery. In response, we are developing a novel distraction device for incremental and personalized PE correction with minimal risk and pain, akin to orthodontic treatment using dental braces. To design t

Many computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems use neural networks (NNs) for either detection or classification of abnormalities. Currently, most NNs are "optimized" by manual search in a very limited parameter space. In this work, we evaluated the use of automated optimization methods for selecting an optimal convolution neural network (CNN) architecture. Three automated methods, the steepest descent (SD), the simulated annealing (SA), and the genetic algorithm (GA), were compared. We used as an example the CNN that classifies true and false microcalcifications detected on digitized mammograms b

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to determine whether sagittal reformations of volumetric high-resolution computed tomography (CT) provide additional information in evaluating lung abnormalities compared to axial high-resolution CT images.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-two consecutive patients who underwent combined inspiratory and expiratory volumetric high-resolution CT from May to July 2003 were studied. Using end-inspiratory and end-expiratory sagittal reformatted images, respiratory motion artifacts were evaluated at upper, middle, and lower lung areas bilaterally.

Lung cancer has the highest death rate of any other cancer in the world. Detecting lung cancer early can increase a patient's survival rate. The corresponding work presents the method for improving the computer-aided detection (CAD) of nodules present in the lung area in computed tomography (CT) images. The main aim was to get an overview of the latest tools and technologies used: acquisition, storage, segmentation, classification, processing, and analysis of biomedical data. After the analysis, a model is proposed consisting of three main steps. In the first step, threshold values and compone

Cone-beam imaging has gained broad acceptance in dentistry in the last 5 years. The purpose of this review is to describe the use in dentistry and consider issues requiring further development. Cone-beam machines emit an x-ray beam shaped liked a cone rather than a fan as in conventional computed tomography (CT) machines. After this beam passes through the patient the remnant beam is captured on an amorphous silicon flat panel or image intensifier/charge-coupled device (CCD) detector. The beam diameter ranges from 4 to 30 cm and exposes the head in one pass around the patient capturing from 16
