Exploring the Influence of Feature Selection Methods on a Random Forest Model for Gait Time Series Prediction Using Inertial Measurement Units.

Despite the increasing use of inertial measurement units (IMUs) and machine learning techniques for gait analysis, there remains a gap in which feature selection methods are best tailored for gait time series prediction. This study explores the impact of using various feature selection methods on the performance of a random forest (RF) model in predicting lower limb joints kinematics from two IMUs. The primary objectives of this study are as follows: (1) Comparing eight feature selection methods based on their ability to identify more robust feature sets, time efficiency, and impact on RF mode

Construction of a diagnostic classifier for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and cervical cancer based on XGBoost feature selection and random forest model.

BACKGROUND: The pathological phenotype of early-stage cervical cancer (CC) is similar to that of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), which provides a challenge for the diagnosis of cervical precancerous lesions. Meanwhile, the existing diagnostic methods have certain subjectivity and limitations, resulting in the possibility of misdiagnosis or missed diagnosis. Hence, some methods are needed to assist diagnosis of CC and CIN. METHODS: Based on the data of CIN and CC in gene expression omnibus (GEO) dataset, the eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm was used to screen the feature

Selecting the most important self-assessed features for predicting conversion to mild cognitive impairment with random forest and permutation-based methods.

Alzheimer's Disease is a complex, multifactorial, and comorbid condition. The asymptomatic behavior in the early stages makes the identification of the disease onset particularly challenging. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is an intermediary stage between the expected decline of normal aging and the pathological decline associated with dementia. The identification of risk factors for MCI is thus sorely needed. Self-reported personal information such as age, education, income level, sleep, diet, physical exercise, etc. is called to play a key role not only in the early identification of MCI bu

Quantitative and qualitative determination of LiuweiDihuang preparations by ultra high performance liquid chromatography in dual-wavelength fingerprinting mode and random forest.

The classical traditional Chinese formulation LiuweiDihuang, shown to have clinical efficacy for "nourishing kidney-yin" in traditional Chinese medicine, has been used for thousands of years in China. Little attention, however, has been paid to quality control methods for this formulation. Hence, a rapid and sensitive analytical technique is urgently needed for the evaluation of LiuweiDihuang preparations to assess its quality and pharmacological functionality. In this study, an ultra high performance liquid chromatography dual-wavelength method was developed to simultaneously determine 11 con

Predicting the outcome of intramuscular psoas lengthening in children with cerebral palsy using preoperative gait data and the random forest algorithm.

This study used the random forest algorithm to predict outcomes of intramuscular psoas lengthening as part of a single event multi-level surgery in patients with cerebral palsy. Data related to preoperative medical history, physical exam, and instrumented three-dimensional gait analysis were extracted from a historic database in a motion analysis center. Data from 800 limbs of patients with diplegic cerebral palsy were analyzed. An index quantifying the overall deviation in pelvic tilt and hip flexion was used to define outcome categories. The random forest algorithm was used to derive criteri

Polystyrene nanoplastics induce multi-organ oxidative stress in mice: experimental evidence and a descriptive random forest-based analysis of study-design variables.

Polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs), ubiquitous in natural environments, readily accumulate in organisms and pose emerging toxicological risks. This study pairs in vivo animal experiments assessing organ-specific oxidative stress responses induced by PS-NPs exposure with a descriptive random forest-based analysis of study-design variables reported in the published literature. Kunming mice were administered varying concentrations of PS-NPs with or without N-acetylcysteine (NAC) to assess oxidative stress across five organs (lung, liver, kidney, brain, and testicles). Dose-dependent increases in R

Random forest-based QSAR and molecular dynamics insights into steroidal pregnanes as 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 modulators for type 2 diabetes.

The enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD1) is a validated therapeutic target for type 2 diabetes mellitus due to its role in local regeneration of active glucocorticoids. Current inhibitors are often limited by their constrained chemical diversity, moderate potency, and off-target effects. The therapeutic potential of steroidal pregnanes in diabetes and metabolic disorders is widely reported; however, their molecular targets, particularly in glucocorticoid signaling, remain poorly understood. This study explored the interactions of a curated library of steroidal pregnanes wi

Distinguishing a drug use disorder from drug use in a high-risk sample of youth: A random forest classification and explanatory analysis.

Although many adolescents and young adults experiment with drugs, a subset may develop a drug use disorder (DUD). Few studies have used machine learning to identify risk and protective factors associated with DUDs, and to the best of our knowledge, none have been conducted with a high-risk youth sample or incorporated explanatory analyses to understand how such factors influence model predictions. We sought to address these gaps by estimating a random forest to identify salient risk and protective factors that differentiate youth with a DUD from their peers who use drugs but do not meet diagno

Influences of organic nitrogen application ratio on oil content in flue-cured tobacco based on field experiments and a random forest model.

Tobacco is a key economic crop, with leaf oil content serving as a critical determinant of leaf quality. To address the limited understanding of mechanisms underlying oil content improvement and the decline in flue-cured tobacco quality caused by long-term reliance on chemical fertilizers, this study integrated field experiments with a machine learning approach. Five treatments with varying organic nitrogen ratios (0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%) were evaluated at a single experimental site in Hengyang, Hunan. Results indicated that a 30% organic nitrogen ratio significantly enhanced the activity

Comparison of the Cox Proportional Hazards Model and Random Survival Forest Algorithm for Predicting Patient-Specific Survival Probabilities in Clinical Trial Data.

The Cox proportional hazards model is often used to analyze data from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with time-to-event outcomes. Random survival forest (RSF) is a machine-learning algorithm known for its high predictive performance. We conduct a comprehensive neutral comparison study to compare the performance of Cox regression and RSF in various simulation scenarios based on two reference datasets from RCTs. The motivation is to identify settings in which one method is preferable over the other when comparing different aspects of performance using measures according to the TRIPOD (Trans

Based on Soluble Immune Checkpoints Constructing a Random Survival Forest Model to Predict the Prognosis of Hepatitis B Virus-Associated Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Nowadays, immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) therapy has become a milestone in immunotherapy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, its clinical effectiveness remains low. Soluble (s) immune checkpoints (ICs), functional components of membrane ICs, are novel physiological immunomodulators. We investigated the prognostic value of sICs in patients of hepatitis B virus-associated hepatocellular carcinoma (HBV-HCC) and provided clinical clues for potential new targets for future immunotherapy. METHODS: A total of 256 participants were included in this study. We compared the plasma

Evaluation of three chemical transport models for extreme PM10 events in Morocco and improvement of forecasts using hybrid CTM-Random Forest models.

Particulate matter (PM10), originating from natural sources such as dust storms and human activities, significantly impacts public health and the environment. Accurate forecasting of PM10 concentrations is therefore crucial. This study aims to predict PM10 levels during extreme pollution episodes in Morocco using chemical transport models (CTMs) and to enhance these predictions with machine learning (ML) models. Three CTMs, namely CHIMERE, SILAM, and CAMS were validated during a high PM10 pollution episode that occurred between 2020 and 2021 in five Moroccan cities. Subsequently, two hybrid mo
