Comorbidity of Arithmetic and Reading Disorder.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the cognitive profiles of primary school children (age 82-133 months) on a battery of basic number processing and calculation tasks. The sample consisted of four groups matched for age and IQ: arithmetic disorder only (AD; n = 20), reading disorder only (RD; n = 40), a comorbid group ( n = 27), and an unimpaired control group ( n = 40). Multiple 2 (RD vs. No RD) × 2 (AD vs. No AD) factorial ANCOVAs showed that children with RD had selective impairments in counting and number transcoding efficiency. In contrast, children with AD performed poorly i

Reading skill and structural brain development.

Reading is a learned skill that is likely influenced by both brain maturation and experience. Functional imaging studies have identified brain regions important for skilled reading, but the structural brain changes that co-occur with reading acquisition remain largely unknown. We investigated maturational volume changes in brain reading regions and their association with performance on reading measures. Sixteen typically developing children (5-15 years old, eight boys, mean age of sample=10.06 ± 3.29) received two MRI scans (mean interscan interval=2.19 years), and were administered a battery

The cultural evolution of mind reading.

It is not just a manner of speaking: "Mind reading," or working out what others are thinking and feeling, is markedly similar to print reading. Both of these distinctly human skills recover meaning from signs, depend on dedicated cortical areas, are subject to genetically heritable disorders, show cultural variation around a universal core, and regulate how people behave. But when it comes to development, the evidence is conflicting. Some studies show that, like learning to read print, learning to read minds is a long, hard process that depends on tuition. Others indicate that even very young,

Decoding letter position in word reading.

A fundamental computation underlying visual word recognition is the ability to transform a set of letters into a visual word form. Neuropsychological data suggest that letter position within a word may be independently affected by brain damage, resulting in a dissociable subtype of peripheral dyslexia. Here we used functional magnetic resonance imaging and supervised machine learning techniques to classify letter position based on activation patterns evoked during reading Hebrew words. Across the entire brain, activity patterns in the left intraparietal sulcus provided the best classification

Early Identification of Reading Comprehension Difficulties.

Most research on early identification of reading disabilities has focused on word reading problems and little attention has been given to reading comprehension difficulties. In this study, we investigated whether measures of language ability and/or response to language intervention in kindergarten uniquely predicted reading comprehension difficulties in third grade. A total of 366 children were administered a battery of screening measures at the beginning of kindergarten and progress monitoring probes across the school year. A subset of children also received a 26-week Tier 2 language interven

Prosody and reading in dyslexic children.

This study investigates the role of prosody in the reading aloud of dyslexic children. Ten dyslexic and 30 non-dyslexic control children (mean age 9.5 and 9.9 years, respectively) were recorded when reading a text of appropriate level and subsequently asked to retell it and tested on its comprehension. The data were analysed acoustically by the WinPitchPro programme. The temporal and intonational processing of reading of the two groups were contrasted and revealed unusual characteristics of the dyslexic group with respect to what follows: (1) temporal processing (reduced speeds of reading and

Reading strategies in Spanish developmental dyslexics.

Cross-linguistic studies suggest that the orthographic system determines the reading performance of dyslexic children. In opaque orthographies, the fundamental feature of developmental dyslexia is difficulty in reading accuracy, whereas slower reading speed is more common in transparent orthographies. The aim of the current study was to examine the extent to which different variables of words affect reaction times and articulation times in developmental dyslexics. A group of 19 developmental dyslexics of different ages and an age-matched group of 19 children without reading disabilities comple

Reading skills of Japanese second-graders.

BACKGROUND: A few studies have explored the prevalence of dyslexia among children who speak Japanese as their native language by evaluating them individually by means of reading-based tasks. The present study was designed to clarify the frequency of suspected dyslexia among second-graders attending ordinary classes. METHODS: The subjects were 40 children (22 males, 18 females; 7 years 4 months-8 years 4 months; mean age, 7 years 11 months) out of 182 second-graders at a public elementary school situated in a local city. Each subject underwent a monomoraic syllable reading task, a word reading

[Ocular movements and reading: a review].

A literature review of the important findings discovered over the past three decades on ocular movements during reading is presented herein. This fairly recent function in human evolution is a sophisticated sensorimotor and cognitive activity that brings very complex neurological and motor mechanisms into play. However, knowledge in this field is limited, even though reading problems are very common in children. We collected all the references in PubMed dating from 1969 to 2009 using the following "binocular coordination", "eye movements", "reading", and "dyslexia". When reading, the visual ax

Implicit reading in Chinese pure alexia.

A number of recent studies have shown that some patients with pure alexia display evidence of implicit access to lexical and semantic information about words that they cannot read explicitly. This phenomenon has not been investigated systematically in Chinese patients. We report here a case study of a Chinese patient who met the criteria for pure alexia and had lesions in the left occipitotemporal region and the splenium of the corpus callosum. His explicit and implicit reading was evaluated with various stimuli in a number of tasks. We found that despite his severe impairment in overt reading

Treatment of reading impairment after stroke.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Reading impairments after left or right hemisphere stroke are common yet receive little attention from clinicians and therapists. In this review, we focus on the classification of acquired alexia and the current theory and practice underlying the rehabilitation of this diverse set of disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: The underlying behavioural impairments that dictate reading ability in the acquired alexias are becoming better understood; this, in turn, has led to targeted therapies being undertaken, mainly on a single subject basis. In hemianopic alexia, the most 'peripheral' of

Reading cinnamon activates olfactory brain regions.

Some words immediately and automatically remind us of odours, smells and scents, whereas other language items do not evoke such associations. This study investigated, for the first time, the abstract linking of linguistic and odour information using modern neuroimaging techniques (functional MRI). Subjects passively read odour-related words ('garlic', 'cinnamon', 'jasmine') and neutral language items. The odour-related terms elicited activation in the primary olfactory cortex, which include the piriform cortex and the amygdala. Our results suggest the activation of widely distributed cortical

Ancient medical texts, modern reading problems.

The word tradition has a very specific meaning in linguistics: the passing down of a text, which may have been completed or corrected by different copyists at different times, when the concept of authorship was not the same as it is today. When reading an ancient text the word tradition must be in the reader's mind. To discuss one of the problems an ancient text poses to its modern readers, this work deals with one of the first printed medical texts in Portuguese, the Regimento proueytoso contra ha pestenença, and draws a parallel between it and two related texts, A moche profitable treatise a

Symbol-string sensitivity and children's reading.

In this study of primary school children, a novel 'symbol-string' task is used to assess sensitivity to the position of briefly presented non-alphabetic but letter-like symbols. The results demonstrate that sensitivity in the symbol-string task explains a unique proportion of the variability in children's contextual reading accuracy. Moreover, developmental dyslexic readers show reduced sensitivity in this task, compared to chronological age controls. The results suggest that limitations set by visuo-spatial processes and/or attentional iconic memory resources may constrain children's reading

['Palm reading' as a diagnostic aid].

In four patients, a man aged 53, a woman aged 63 and two men aged 67 and 53 years, respectively, inspection of the hand led to the final diagnosis. In the first patient who presented with clubbing of the fingers and pulmonary hypertension, a small atrial septal defect was detected. The second patient had thick curved yellow nails and recurrent pleural effusions as part of this yellow nail syndrome. The third patient presented with clubbing and hypertrophic osteoarthropathy, a secondary complaint to adenocarcinoma of the lung. The fourth patient had increasing pulmonary hypertension as a second

From language to reading and dyslexia.

This paper reviews evidence in support of the phonological deficit hypothesis of dyslexia. Findings from two experimental studies suggest that the phonological deficits of dyslexic children and adults cannot be explained in terms of impairments in low-level auditory mechanisms, but reflect higher-level language weaknesses. A study of individual differences in the pattern of reading skills in dyslexic children rejects the notion of 'sub-types'. Instead, the findings suggest that the variation seen in reading processes can be accounted for by differences in the severity of individual children's
