Improved emotion regulation following a trauma-informed CBT-based intervention associates with reduced risk for recidivism in justice-involved emerging adults.

OBJECTIVE: Male youth who have been involved in the juvenile legal system have disproportionate rates of trauma and violence exposure. Many justice-involved youth have untreated mental illness, with an estimated 66% of young men who are incarcerated meeting criteria for at least one mental health disorder, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and substance abuse. While Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approaches are considered among effective evidence-based treatments for addressing and treating behavioral and emotional difficulties, male youth with a history of incarc

When sexual offender treatment in prison-based social-therapeutic treatment is not completed: Relationship to risk factors and recidivism after release.

BACKGROUND: Various studies have demonstrated that people who do not complete sex offender treatment have higher recidivism rates than completers or untreated controls. The mechanism behind this association, however, remains unclear. One explanation is that responsivity issues are more prevalent in high-risk offenders, making treatment failure and recidivism more likely, especially if treatment intensity is insufficient to match criminal needs. In addition, dropout may have a negative effect on offenders by increasing feelings of frustration or self-doubt. AIMS: To retest for a link between t

How the risk principle reduces recidivism: The impact of legislative revisions on the release and reoffense rates of individuals convicted of sexual offenses.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined the relationship between legislative revisions regarding sexual offenses and the release decisions and recidivism rates of individuals convicted of sexual offenses. In 2008, the Austrian government passed a package of revised criminal laws aiming to decrease incarceration rates. At the same time, connecting recidivism risk to professional risk management efforts was expected to increase public safety. HYPOTHESES: Given the strong empirical background of the implemented risk assessment and management efforts, we expected both an increase in the percentage

Criminal reactions to drug-using offenders: A systematic review of the effect of treatment and/or punishment on reduction of drug use and/or criminal recidivism.

The association between substance use and crime is very common, but complex. Several countries have found strategies to face drug abuse and criminality that may exist associated to it, seeking to reduce overcrowded prisons and to promote the reductions of criminal recidivism and/or substance use. Through the guidelines of PRISMA, a systematic review was conducted with the aim to explore the different criminal reactions to individuals who use substances and are involved in the criminal justice system, namely the role of treatment and/or punishment in the reduction of crime recidivism and/or dru

Metabolic stroke in three years old boy as the consequence of metabolic derangement. A case report of recidiving Reye's-like syndrome.

Three years old boy with developmental renal dysplasia was hit as newborn child by attack of cerebral edema with metabolic disturbances (hypoglycemia, hypophosphatemia, ketoacidosis and with hypocoagulation state) and was classified as child at risk in the pediatric evidence. In the third year of the age he went through nephrectomy and after the operation, the similar metabolic disturbances occurred (hypoglycemia, ketoacidosis, derangement of the metabolic situation). Cerebral edema and the metabolic stroke developed. Reye's-like syndrome was considered and serious functional disturbances of b

Therapeutic Alliance as a Mediator in the Absence of Post-Treatment Recidivism: A Study of Men Who Have Committed a Sexual Offense Against a Child.

The impact of motivation for change, group therapy climate, and therapeutic alliance on treatment success in men who have committed sexual offenses (MCSOs) has produced mixed results in previous studies, often studied independently or limited to treatment progression. Thus, the way these factors interact and influence post-treatment recidivism remains unclear. The present study addressed this gap by examining the interplay of these factors in a sample of 140 men who had committed sexual offenses against children, followed for a potential recidivism period of 5-8 years, using both repeated meas

The predictive value of the dynamic risk outcome scales (DROS) for recidivism in (forensic) clients with mild intellectual disabilities or borderline intellectual functioning.

BACKGROUND: The dynamic risk outcome scales (DROS) was developed to assess treatment progress of clients with mild intellectual disability or borderline intellectual functioning using dynamic risk factors. We studied the predictive value of the DROS on various classifications and severity levels of recidivism. METHOD: Data of 250 forensic clients with intellectual disabilities were linked to recidivism data from the Judicial Information Service in the Netherlands. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analyses were used to determine the predictive values. RESULTS: The DROS total score cou

The Role of Non-Echoplanar Diffusion-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Diagnosis of Primary Cholesteatoma and Cholesteatoma Recidivism as an Adjunct to Clinical Evaluation.

INTRODUCTION:: The aim of this study was to analyze the sensitivity and specificity of non-echoplanar (non-EPI) diffusion-weighted (DW) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the detection of cholesteatoma, with a focus on its value as an adjunct to clinical examination. METHODS:: In a prospective cohort study, 92 cases were divided into 2 groups: "clinically cholesteatoma" ( n = 79) and "clinically no cholesteatoma" ( n = 13). Non-EPI DW MRI was performed preoperatively in all cases. The presence of a cholesteatoma was assessed by clinicians otoscopically, by neuroradiologists on non-EPI DW MR

Association between neurodevelopmental disorders and recidivism among forensic outpatients under the Medical Treatment and Supervision Act in Japan: A retrospective cohort study.

AIM: Some features of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) have been discussed as potential factors related to criminal behavior, and addressing their characteristics may help prevent recidivism among forensic patients. However, evidence from Japan remains limited. This study examined the association between NDDs and recidivism among forensic outpatients receiving treatment under Japan's Medical Treatment and Supervision Act (MTSA). METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used the national database of Japanese forensic outpatients who received treatment under the MTSA between 2005 and 2017. G

Cue-induced inhibitory control in forensic patients with alcohol use disorder: A link to criminal recidivism risk assessed by factor 2 psychopathy.

Cue-reactivity and impaired inhibitory control represent well-established mechanisms contributing to substance use relapse, which, in turn, increases the risk of criminal reoffending in forensic populations whose offending behavior is closely linked to substance use. In Germany, such individuals may be mandated to custodial addiction treatment under Section 64 of the Criminal Code (§ 64 StGB). To date, it remains largely unexplored whether inhibitory control deficits under substance-cue exposure relate more directly to indicators of criminal recidivism risk in forensic addiction populations. Do Triarchic Psychopathy Components of New Zealand High-Risk Parolees Predict Probation Officer Relationship Quality, Quality of Life on Parole, and Recidivism?

The Triarchic Psychopathy Measure (TriPM) is a self-report scale based on the Triarchic Model that has been little used in research in the criminal justice system. We sought to examine associations between pre-release TriPM components, probation officer relationships, and parolee quality of life, both measured after 2 months in the community, and reconviction 12 months after release. Using data from 234 New Zealand male high-risk prisoners, we tested four multivariate models each across three timepoints. Pre-release, we found Boldness was not predictive, but Meanness predicted poorer relations

The Effects of Traumatic Brain Injury and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder on Prison Adjustment and Recidivism among Military Veterans: Evidence from Minnesota.

The prevalence of, and link between, mental health disorders-such as traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-and antisocial behavior is well-documented among the military veteran population. Studies also show that TBI and PTSD account for variation in prison-based and re-entry outcomes. Despite this body of research, comparatively fewer studies have explicitly focused on how these factors affect prison adjustment for inmates with prior military experience. We used administrative data provided by the Minnesota Department of Corrections (MnDOC) and employed a serie

Cholesteatoma disease recidivism after canal wall up tympanomastoidectomy with or without obliteration (CLEAR-EAR): A protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE: Cholesteatoma treatment relies on surgery with disease removal as the primary goal. While canal wall down (CWD) and canal wall up (CWU) tympanomastoidectomy remain standard approaches, mastoid obliteration has gained popularity. Canal wall up preserves ear canal anatomy and adding the obliteration technique suggests lower recurrence and residual rates. However, controversy persists and surgical consensus is lacking. Current decision-making relies on personal experience and patient-related factors rather than high-quality evidence. This study therefore investigates whe

Predictive Validity of Tools for Assessing Recidivism Risk in Men Convicted of Sex Offending: Static-99R, Static-2002R and BARR-2002R.

Recidivism risk assessment is crucial for effective case management of men convicted of sex offending. The use of empirical actuarial risk tools has become routine in the field. However, the development of actuarial risk scales for assessing general, violent and/or sexual recidivism in these men is ongoing: The Static-99 led to the Static-99R and the Static-2002R, and the BARR-2002R emerged to assess violent recidivism risk. A study was undertaken to evaluate and compare the inter-rater and predictive validity of the Static-99R, the Static-2002R, and the BARR-2002R in a sample of 328 men convi

Phenobarbital compared to benzodiazepines in alcohol withdrawal treatment: A register-based cohort study of subsequent benzodiazepine use, alcohol recidivism and mortality.

BACKGROUND: Long-acting benzodiazepines such as chlordiazepoxide are recommended as first-line treatment for alcohol withdrawal. These drugs are known for their abuse liability and might increase alcohol consumption among problem drinkers. Phenobarbital could be an alternative treatment option, possibly with the drawback of a more pronounced acute toxicity. We evaluated if phenobarbital compared to chlordiazepoxide decreased the risk of subsequent use of benzodiazepines, alcohol recidivism and mortality. METHODS: The study was a register-based cohort study of patients admitted for alcohol wit

Behavioral Health Care Needs, Detention-Based Care, and Criminal Recidivism at Community Reentry From Juvenile Detention: A Multisite Survival Curve Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: We examined the provision of behavioral health services to youths detained in Indiana between 2008 and 2012 and the impact of services on recidivism. METHOD: We obtained information about behavioral health needs, behavioral health treatment received, and recidivism within 12 months after release for 8363 adolescents (aged 12-18 years; 79.4% male). We conducted survival analyses to determine whether behavioral health services significantly affected time to recidivating. RESULTS: Approximately 19.1% of youths had positive mental health screens, and 25.3% of all youths recidivated w

Association of psychotropic medications with the use of coercive measures and recidivism during forensic psychiatric care: a Swedish nationwide register-based study.

BACKGROUND: Patients in forensic psychiatric care (FPC) are often treated with various psychotropic medications. However, evidence regarding their effectiveness in this setting is lacking. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to estimate how different psychotropic medications are associated with the use of coercive measures and recidivism during FPC. METHODS: In this observational national register-based study, we included all patients newly registered as admitted to FPC in Sweden between January 2009 and August 2024. Examining Benchmarks of Sexual Recidivism Rates for Short, Moderate, and Long-Term Follow-Up Periods: A Meta-Analysis of Canadian and American Studies.

Measuring sexual recidivism involves both a behavioral and a temporal component. The behavioral component is sexually reoffending, generally measured using official sources. The temporal component is the follow-up period during which sexual recidivism is examined. Research has shown that if the length of the follow-up period is extended, rates of sexual recidivism increase. What is less clear is the functional form of this relationship. The present study examines this relationship through a meta-analysis of 468 sexual recidivism studies conducted in Canada and the United States and published s
