Abnormal development of biceps brachii phasic stretch reflex and persistence of short latency heteronymous reflexes from biceps to triceps brachii in spastic cerebral palsy.

Co-contraction of antagonist muscles is characteristic of spasticity arising from perinatal brain damage but not in spasticity occurring after brain damage in adulthood. Such co-contraction is a normal feature of early post-natal motor development. Heteronymous, monosynaptic Group Ia projections from biceps brachii to both the antagonist triceps brachii and to other synergist and non-synergist muscles of the upper limb occur in the newborn baby and become restricted during the first 4 years to motor neurons of primarily synergistic muscles. Longitudinal and cross-sectional studies have been pe

Synaptic Inputs to the Mouse Dorsal Vagal Complex and Its Resident Preproglucagon Neurons.

Stress responses are coordinated by widespread neural circuits. Homeostatic and psychogenic stressors activate preproglucagon (PPG) neurons in the caudal nucleus of the solitary tract (cNTS) that produce glucagon-like peptide-1; published work in rodents indicates that these neurons play a crucial role in stress responses. While the axonal targets of PPG neurons are well established, their afferent inputs are unknown. Here we use retrograde tracing with cholera toxin subunit b to show that the cNTS in male and female mice receives axonal inputs similar to those reported in rats. Monosynaptic a

Reduced Renshaw recurrent inhibition after neonatal sciatic nerve crush in rats.

Renshaw recurrent inhibition (RI) plays an important gated role in spinal motion circuit. Peripheral nerve injury is a common disease in clinic. Our current research was designed to investigate the change of the recurrent inhibitory function in the spinal cord after the peripheral nerve crush injury in neonatal rat. Sciatic nerve crush was performed on 5-day-old rat puppies and the recurrent inhibition between lateral gastrocnemius-soleus (LG-S) and medial gastrocnemius (MG) motor pools was assessed by conditioning monosynaptic reflexes (MSR) elicited from the sectioned dorsal roots and record

elPBN neurons regulate rVLM activity through elPBN-rVLM projections during activation of cardiac sympathetic afferent nerves.

The external lateral parabrachial nucleus (elPBN) within the pons and rostral ventrolateral medulla (rVLM) contributes to central processing of excitatory cardiovascular reflexes during stimulation of cardiac sympathetic afferent nerves (CSAN). However, the importance of elPBN cardiovascular neurons in regulation of rVLM activity during CSAN activation remains unclear. We hypothesized that CSAN stimulation excites the elPBN cardiovascular neurons and, in turn, increases rVLM activity through elPBN-rVLM projections. Compared with controls, in rats subjected to microinjection of retrograde trace

Upslope treadmill exercise enhances motor axon regeneration but not functional recovery following peripheral nerve injury.

Following peripheral nerve injury, moderate daily exercise conducted on a level treadmill results in enhanced axon regeneration and modest improvements in functional recovery. If the exercise is conducted on an upwardly inclined treadmill, even more motor axons regenerate successfully and reinnervate muscle targets. Whether this increased motor axon regeneration also results in greater improvement in functional recovery from sciatic nerve injury was studied. Axon regeneration and muscle reinnervation were studied in Lewis rats over an 11 wk postinjury period using stimulus evoked electromyogra

Dissociation of the pathways mediating ipsilateral and contralateral motor-evoked potentials in human hand and arm muscles.

1. Growing evidence points toward involvement of the human motor cortex in the control of the ipsilateral hand. We used focal transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to examine the pathways of these ipsilateral motor effects. 2. Ipsilateral motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) were obtained in hand and arm muscles of all 10 healthy adult subjects tested. They occurred in the finger and wrist extensors and the biceps, but no response or inhibitory responses were observed in the opponens pollicis, finger and wrist flexors and the triceps. 3. The production of ipsilateral MEPs required contraction of t

Selective dorsal rhizotomy: functional anatomy of the conus-cauda and essentials of intraoperative neurophysiology.

INTRODUCTION: Spasticity is the result of an exaggeration of the monosynaptic muscle stretch reflex due to lesions affecting the central nervous system, in particular an upper motor neuron lesion. Selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) is a surgical technique developed to treat spastic diplegia, one of the common forms of cerebral palsy, resulting from the lack of supraspinal inhibitory controls. The aim of SDR is to identify and cut a critical amount of the sensory rootlets, in particular those contributing the most to spasticity, in order to relieve the patient from lower limb spasticity while pre

Neurophysiological and Neuroanatomical Background of Spasticity: Surgical Implication for Dorsal Rhizotomy in Cerebral Palsy.

Spasticity arises from the exaggeration of the monosynaptic reflex, attributed to the loss of inhibitory influences from descending supraspinal structures, though not exclusively. Defined by its resistance to muscle stretching, spasticity yields two significant outcomes. Firstly, muscles tend to remain in a shortened position, restricting movement. Secondly, hypertonia, coupled with a lack of mobilization, leads to soft tissue changes, including a loss of viscoelasticity. This non-velocity-dependent biomechanical aspect limits movements, even at slow velocities, rendering them unresponsive to

Pokes, sunburn, and hot sauce: Drosophila as an emerging model for the biology of nociception.

The word "nociception" is derived from the Latin "nocere," which means "to harm." Nociception refers to the sensory perception of noxious stimuli that have the potential to cause tissue damage. Since the perception of such potentially harmful stimuli often results in behavioral escape responses, nociception provides a protective mechanism that allows an organism to avoid incipient (or further) damage to the tissue. It appears to be universal in metazoans as a variety of escape responses can be observed in both mammalian and non-mammalian vertebrates, as well as diverse invertebrates such as le

Noradrenergic facilitation of motor neurons: localization of adrenergic receptors in neurons and nonneuronal cells in the trigeminal motor nucleus.

Both alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors (ARs) are involved in the facilitation of the monosynaptic jaw-closing reflex in the trigeminal motor nucleus (MoV) caused by norepinephrine (NE). The amplitude of muscle spindle afferent-evoked EPSPs in masseter motor neurons is 65% greater when noradrenergic axons to the motor nucleus are concomitantly activated and seems to be due to a presynaptic mechanism (Vornov, J. J., and J. Sutin. 1986. J. Neurosci. 6: 30-37). To determine the subtypes of ARs located on motor neurons and other cells, the cytotoxic lectin Ricin communis was injected into the ma

Electrical Stimulation of Low-Threshold Proprioceptive Fibers in the Adult Rat Increases Density of Glutamatergic and Cholinergic Terminals on Ankle Extensor α-Motoneurons.

The effects of stimulation of low-threshold proprioceptive afferents in the tibial nerve on two types of excitatory inputs to α-motoneurons were tested. The first input is formed by glutamatergic Ia sensory afferents contacting monosynaptically α-motoneurons. The second one is the cholinergic input originating from V0c-interneurons, located in lamina X of the spinal cord, modulating activity of α-motoneurons via C-terminals. Our aim was to clarify whether enhancement of signaling to ankle extensor α-motoneurons, via direct electrical stimulation addressed predominantly to low-threshold proprio

Muscarinic excitatory and inhibitory mechanisms involved in afferent fibre-evoked depolarization of motoneurones in the neonatal rat spinal cord.

1. The involvement of acetylcholine and muscarinic receptors in spinal synaptic responses evoked by electrical and noxious sensory stimuli was investigated in the neonatal rat spinal cord in vitro. 2. Potentials were recorded extracellularly from a ventral root (L3-L5) of the isolated spinal cord, spinal cord-cutaneous nerve, and spinal cord-skin preparations of 1- to 4-day-old rats. Spinal reflexes were elicited by electrical stimulation of the ipsilateral dorsal root or the cutaneous saphenous nerve, or by noxious skin stimulation. 3. Single shock stimulation of supramaximum intensity of a d

Intensity-dependent corticospinal facilitation by repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation: evidence for a major contribution of group I afferents.

Repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation (PMS) is increasingly used in neurorehabilitation, yet the optimal intensity for inducing corticospinal facilitation and underlying afferent mechanisms remains unclear. We investigated the intensity-dependent effects of PMS on corticospinal excitability and single motor unit responses, and tested the contribution of group I afferents. Healthy young adults received repetitive PMS over the extensor carpi radialis (ECR) in a crossover design at 0.9 × motor threshold (MT), 1.2 × MT, and high-intensity stimulation individually adjusted to induce maximal wr

[Pharmacologic profile of protirelin tartrate].

Pharmacological interest in the tripeptide thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) is due to the multiple effects it produces. In fact, apart from taking part in regulating the activity of the hypothalamo-pituitary-thyroid axis, TRH produces various neuropharmacological effects which indicate a biological role that is probably more important than that of a releasing hormone. Trials performed in animals have shown, for example, the dose-dependent capacity of TRH to induce analgesia, probably by interacting with the opioid peptide system. Motor activity is affected by TRH. In fact this tripeptide el

Changes in brainstem habituation during onabotulinumtoxinA treatment in chronic migraine: A prospective case-control study.

OBJECTIVES/BACKGROUND: Chronic migraine is a debilitating neurological disorder characterized by central sensitization and impaired brainstem habituation. OnabotulinumtoxinA is an established prophylactic treatment for chronic migraine, yet its effects on central trigeminal sensory processing remain incompletely understood. The nociceptive blink reflex (nBR) is a well-established neurophysiological tool for assessing brainstem excitability and central sensory processing within the trigeminal system. This prospective case-control study investigated longitudinal changes in brainstem neurophysiol
