Cough reflex in rabbits 24-h and 48-h after sulphur dioxide breathing.

The cough reflex elicitability (CRE), cough reflex strength (CRS) and Hering-Breuer inflation reflex (HBIR) were studied in 51 anaesthetized (Pentobarbital Spofa, 30 mg/kg, i.v.) female rabbits 24-h and 48-h after SO2 breathing. To provoke cough, the interior of the trachea and carina were stroked with a polyethylene catheter. To elicit the HBIR, the lungs were inflated to 1.0 kPa intratracheal pressure. Intrapleural and systemic blood pressures were recorded. The CRE, CRS and HBIR obtained 24-h and 48-h after SO2 breathing were compared with correspondent values of control animals. It was fou

Significance of dopamine receptor antagonists in human postural control.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of different dopamine receptor antagonists on the function of proprioceptive reflex mechanisms involved in the regulation of stance and gait. Haloperidol as preferential D2 and the 'pure' dopamine D2 receptor antagonist sulpiride significantly reduced the level of the reflex response in the gastrocnemius muscle following backward perturbation. Flupentixol, however, which in addition blocks D1 receptors, had no effect on compensatory gastrocnemius EMG responses. Furthermore, neither the peripherally acting dopamine D2 receptor antagonist d

Neurourologic findings in conus medullaris and cauda equina injury.

Fifty-seven patients with documented conus medullaris and cauda equina injury underwent neurourologic evaluation consisting of cystometrography (CMG), perineal floor electromyography (EMG), and bethanechol chloride supersensitivity testing (BST). The bulbocavernosus reflex was normal in only 16% of the patients, and perineal sensation and muscle stretch reflexes were absent or significantly diminished in 77%. The predominant CMG finding was detrusor areflexia (93%). Neuropathic EMG changes were noted in 67% and a positive BST response in 95% of the cases. Statistical analysis showed significan

History-dependence of muscle slack length following contraction and stretch in the human vastus lateralis.

KEY POINTS: In reduced muscle preparations, the slack length and passive stiffness of muscle fibres have been shown to be influenced by previous muscle contraction or stretch. In human muscles, such behaviours have been inferred from measures of muscle force, joint stiffness and reflex magnitudes and latencies. Using ultrasound imaging, we directly observed that isometric contraction of the vastus lateralis muscle at short lengths reduces the slack lengths of the muscle-tendon unit and muscle fascicles. The effect is apparent 60 s after the contraction. These observations imply that muscle con

Localization of pulmonary stretch receptors in the airways of the dog.

1. During respiratory efforts against a closed airway, the afferent activity of vagal fibres from pulmonary stretch receptors does not appreciably increase during the inspiratory phase because the lung is prevented from expanding.2. Occlusion at different levels of the airways allows the localization of pulmonary stretch receptors in the tracheo-bronchial tree.3. 144 fibres from pulmonary stretch receptors on the left side of the tracheo-bronchial tree have been studied in eleven dogs and their localization was as follows: 17.4% in the upper half of the intrathoracic trachea, 27.1% in the lowe

Inhibition of masseteric electromyographic activity during oral respiration.

Although the effects of oral respiration on the growth and development of craniofacial structure have been studied previously, little is known about how altered respiration affects the activity of the jaw-closing muscles. Obstruction of the nasal airway in the cat significantly inhibited the masseteric stretch reflex and discharges of masseteric motor units but did not affect the electromyographic activity of the diaphragm. This inhibition was greater during inspiration than during expiration. In addition, the amplitude of the masseteric monosynaptic reflex elicited by electrical stimulation o

Do axon reflexes exist within the lung?

Circumstantial evidence is given in support of the hypothesis that vagal lung receptors are involved in local axon reflexes. All the components of such mechanisms are present, and teleologically it would make sense for them to exist. It is suggested that rapidly-adapting or irritant receptors produce local muscle relaxation as well as the centrally-mediated reflex bronchoconstriction in other parts of the lung. Conversely, it is suggested that slowly-adapting pulmonary stretch receptors produce the opposite effect - local bronchoconstriction and centrally-mediated reflex bronchodilatation. The

Return of spinal reflex after spinal cord surgery for brachial plexus avulsion injury.

Motor but not sensory function has been described after spinal cord surgery in patients with brachial plexus avulsion injury. In the featured case, motor-related nerve roots as well as sensory spinal nerves distal to the dorsal root ganglion were reconnected to neurons in the ventral and dorsal horns of the spinal cord by implanting nerve grafts. Peripheral and sensory functions were assessed 10 years after an accident and subsequent spinal cord surgery. The biceps stretch reflex could be elicited, and electrophysiological testing demonstrated a Hoffman reflex, or Hreflex, in the biceps muscle

Hypertonia in childhood secondary dystonia due to cerebral palsy is associated with reflex muscle activation.

It is often assumed that co-contraction of antagonist muscles is responsible for increased resistance to passive movement in hypertonic dystonia. Although co-contraction may certainly contribute to hypertonia in some patients, the role of reflex activation has never been investigated. We measured joint torque and surface electromyographic activity during passive flexion and extension movements of the elbow in 8 children with hypertonic arm dystonia due to dyskinetic cerebral palsy. In all cases, we found significant phasic electromyographic activity in the lengthening muscle, consistent with r

Reflex activity and muscle tone during elbow movements in patients with spastic paresis.

Reflex behavior and tension development in upper limb muscles were analyzed and comparisons made between the unaffected and spastic sides of patients with spastic hemiparesis. During sinusoidal (0.3-Hz) isometric or isotonic elbow tracking, with a control either of joint position or of torque, randomly timed displacements were induced (at one of three velocities) stretching either the activated flexor or the extensor muscles. On the spastic side, exaggerated short-latency reflexes were apparent, but in contrast, the amplitude of long-latency electromyography (EMG) responses was reduced. The la

Hypotonia: an erroneous clinical concept?

Muscle tone, if defined as the resistance felt during passive movement of an extremity, is generally explained by the appearance of stretch reflexes. Consequently, hypotonia would be caused by a decrease or disappearance of these reflexes. This notion has never been challenged by experiments that reproduce the clinical situation. In this study two clinical tests, passive extension and flexion movements at the knee joint and a free fall of the lower leg with gravity, were applied to 72 control legs and 35 'hypotonic' legs. EMG activity was measured in the quadriceps muscle. Despite special care

Recovery of the jaw-opening reflex after lesions of the lingual nerve in the rat.

In three groups of rats, lesions were produced in the right lingual nerves near the base of the tongue; the three types of injury inflicted (cryogenic, crush, and stretch) are reputed to spare the epineurium but produce different degrees of intraneural damage. In regular assessments of recovery, an electrical stimulus (sufficient to elicit the jaw-opening reflex) was applied to either side of the tongue in turn; the amplitude of the reflex was measured as the isometric force of jaw opening. The size of the reflex response to stimulation of the injured side was followed up to 4 months post-lesi

Effect of diazepam and desmethyldiazepam in spasticity and rigidity. A quantitative study of reflexes and plasma concentrations.

Benzodiazepines are known to reduce increased muscle stretch reflexes. To investigate the relationship between the necessary plasma concentrations of diazepam and its major metabolite desmethyldiazepam on the one hand and the phasic and tonic ankle reflex activity on the other, 10 mg diazepam was given intravenously to nine patients, seven with spasticity due to multiple sclerosis and two with parkinsonian rigidity. Diazepam and desmethyldiazepam both had a normalizing effect on the increased phasic ankle reflex seen in spasticity. No effect was observed on the increased tonic reflexes in rigi

[Dysautonomia in Guillain-Barré syndrome].

About 20% of all GBS patients have symptoms of dysautonomia: labile hypertension, orthostatic hypotension, sinustachycardia or sinus arrest. This rate rises to 75% in patients with tetraplegia. Proprioceptive loss predicts dysautonomia independently from the severity of weakness. It is frequently responsible for dysautonomia. The afferent limb of cardiovascular regulation contains more myelinated fibers than the sympathetic and parasympathetic efferences, which determine the common classification of dysautonomia. The frequence of mixed sympathetic and parasympathetic hyperactivity is hard to e

Stretching for prevention of Achilles tendon injuries: a review of the literature.

Professional and recreational athletes commonly perform pre-exercise stretching to prevent musculoskeletal injuries. Little definitive evidence exists that clearly demonstrates the efficacy of stretching in reducing injury. Achilles tendon injuries are among the most common injuries affecting active individuals in the United States today. Clinicians commonly recommend stretching the Achilles tendon without concrete scientific evidence to support such a claim. Few studies have addressed the effect of stretching in Achilles tendon injuries, and it is unclear if the conclusions made for musculosk

Reflex responsiveness of a human hand muscle when controlling isometric force and joint position.

OBJECTIVE: This study compared reflex responsiveness of the first dorsal interosseus muscle during two tasks that employ different strategies to stabilize the finger while exerting the same net muscle torque. METHODS: Healthy human subjects performed two motor tasks that involved either pushing up against a rigid restraint to exert a constant isometric force equal to 20% of maximum or maintaining a constant angle at the metacarpophalangeal joint while supporting an equivalent inertial load. Each task consisted of six 40-s contractions during which electrical and mechanical stimuli were delive

Ablation of cerebellar nuclei prevents H-reflex down-conditioning in rats.

While studies of cerebellar involvement in learning and memory have described plasticity within the cerebellum, its role in acquisition of plasticity elsewhere in the CNS is largely unexplored. This study set out to determine whether the cerebellum is needed for acquisition of the spinal cord plasticity that underlies operantly conditioned decrease in the H-reflex, the electrical analog of the spinal stretch reflex. Rats in which the cerebellar output nuclei dentate and interpositus (DIN) had been ablated were exposed for 50 d to the H-reflex down-conditioning protocol. DIN ablation, which in

Split medulla preparation in the cat: arterial chemoreceptor reflex and respiratory modulation of the renal sympathetic nerve activity.

The study was undertaken in order to assess the changes in sympathetic output in a split medulla preparation of the cat which, as shown earlier, has impaired respiratory rhythm generation. The effects of medullary midsagittal sections on renal sympathetic nerve firing were investigated in chloralose anesthetized, paralyzed and artificially ventilated cats. Recordings of phrenic and recurrent laryngeal nerve activity served as indices of central respiratory rhythm generation. Sections, 5 mm deep from the dorsal medullary surface and extending 6 mm rostrally and 3 mm caudally to the obex, did no

On Denny-Brown's 'spastic dystonia' - What is it and what causes it?

In this review, we will work around two simple definitions of two different entities, which most often co-exist in patients with lesions to central motor pathways: Spasticity is "Enhanced excitability of velocity-dependent responses to phasic stretch at rest", which will not be the subject of this review, while Spastic dystonia is tonic, chronic, involuntary muscle contraction in the absence of any stretch or any voluntary command (Gracies, 2005). Spastic dystonia is a much less well understood entity that will be the subject this review. Denny-Brown (1966) observed involuntary sustained muscl
