Collective trauma transmission and traumatic reactions among descendants of Armenian refugees.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested, mainly by case reports, that the collective trauma generated by mass calamities may be transmitted to, and have long-lasting effects on, new generations. AIMS: To investigate the psychological impact on contemporary Armenians of traumatic events suffered by Armenians during the period 1914-1918. METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional study investigating demographic and cultural characteristics of a population of 689 people of Armenian origin, residents of Greece and Cyprus. Subjects were recruited during a range of Armenian cultural, athletic or charitable

Sleep paralysis among Cambodian refugees: association with PTSD diagnosis and severity.

Among Cambodian refugees attending a psychiatric clinic (n=100), 49% (49/100) had at least one episode of sleep paralysis (SP) in the previous 12 months. The annual and monthly SP prevalences were much higher in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than in non-PTSD patients. Among the PTSD patients, 65% (30/46) had monthly episodes of SP versus 14.85% (8/54) among non-PTSD patients (chi2[2, n=100]=26.78, P<.001). Moreover, patients with SP in the last month (n=30) versus those without SP had much higher PTSD severity scores. In the entire sample (n=100), the PTSD severity scores correlated sig

Olfactory-triggered panic attacks among Cambodian refugees attending a psychiatric clinic.

Olfactory panic attacks have not been systematically assessed in a psychiatric population by any previous studies. Among Cambodian refugees attending a psychiatric clinic, the present investigation determines the following: (a) 1-month current prevalence of olfactory-triggered panic attacks, (b) associated psychopathology (Hopkins Symptom Checklist and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV-diagnosed posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD]), and (c) frequency in events of olfactory panic of catastrophic cognitions (Panic Attack Cognitions Scale [PACQ]) and flashbacks (Clinician-Administered

The cultural bereavement interview: a new clinical research approach for refugees.

The large number of refugees in the world must cope with the loss of family and homeland. This paper proposes a new concept of cultural bereavement and presents a framework for its identification in the clinical interview with refugees. The cultural bereavement interview explores reactions to personal losses and to losses of both the social systems and the cultural meanings. Eleven areas are systematically explored, the first nine are indicators of bereavement and the tenth and eleventh are "antidotes" to cultural bereavement. The cultural bereavement interview can provide a clinical framework

Catastrophic stress and factors affecting its consequences among Southeast Asian refugees.

Effects on mental health of the stress of being interned in a refugee camp were assessed in a community survey of 1348 Southeast Asians. The impact on depressive mood proved significant but short-lived. Social support derived from the ethnic community and from an intact marriage moderated the risk of developing depressive symptoms, apparently by enhancing a sense of identity and belongingness. A psychological coping mechanism--avoidance of the past--buffered the impact of camp stress on depressive symptoms. While refugees brought into the country under private sponsorship were expected to have

Tuberculin conversions in Indochinese refugees. An assessment of boosting and anergy.

Indochinese refugees entering the United States have a high rate of tuberculosis and tuberculin reactivity. In addition, several investigators have noted that a large number of refugees with initial tuberculin tests that are "not significant" change to "significant" reactions when retested within 8 wk. This "conversion" phenomenon has been reported in 21 to 43% of refugees and has been unexplained by antigen, testing, demographic, or exposure risk factors. A prospective evaluation of 218 refugees, conducted to assess the role of anergy and boosting, confirmed earlier findings, with 52% of 118

Symptom change over time among Hmong refugees: psychiatric patients versus nonpatients.

Most Hmong refugees in Minnesota were assessed in September, 1977, using two self-rating scales (Zung Scale for Depression and 90-item Symptom Checklist). The same group was restudied two years later. During 12 months of 1977-78, psychiatric services were offered to this population. Those seeking psychiatric care were compared with those who did not. These data indicate that the patients reported considerably more symptoms than nonpatients in 1977 prior to receiving care. The patients showed more improvement than the nonpatients between 1977 and 1979.

Dissonance in Kashechewan: Reflections from a physician and the daughter of refugees.

Alterations in the immunologic response induced by human T cell lymphotrophic virus type I (HTLV-I) predispose the development of disseminated strongyloidiasis. We report a case of an atypical clinical presentation of strongyloidiasis in a patient co-infected with HTLV-I causing scrotal and perineal pain and infertility. Strongyloides stercoralis was found in the analysis of the sperm and specific therapy for strongyloidiasis was associated with disappearance of the symptoms.

Linguistic integration improves refugee physical and mental health.

Based on existing evidence, refugees have considerably poorer health outcomes relative to other immigrants and the native-born population. Little is known, however, on what works to achieve improvements in refugees' health. Using a unique longitudinal survey from Australia, this paper shows that linguistic integration is an important marker of health among the refugee population. In particular, linguistically integrated refugees have significantly better physical and mental health outcomes, relative to their linguistically marginalized counterparts. Our analysis additionally highlights the sig

Refugees and access to employment in Brazil: implications for health and sociability.

This is a reflective study with the objective of analyzing the possibilities of access to employment by refugees in the Brazilian territory, in view of the socio-legal conditions in Brazil, understanding the relationship between work and health. Refugees experience the penalty of restricted access to employment, which has a significant impact on their lives. By remaining disconnected from work, they are pushed to the margins of society. In addition to this, they face difficulties in accessing adequate housing, healthcare services, education, healthy food, among others, all of which deeply affe

Identifying resilience-promoting factors for refugee survivors of torture.

INTRODUCTION: There are 1.3 million refugee survivors of torture living in the United States today. An existing body of research with refugees has largely examined mental health, but few of these studies focused on resilience. OBJECTIVE: Using a clinical sample of refugee survivors of torture, we tested the resiliencepromoting factors of community engagement, employment, English fluency, and psychological flexibility. We conducted moderation and mediation analyses to investigate how these resilience-promoting factors impact the torture-mental health relationship. RESULTS: Torture severity ha

Pediatric Care for Immigrant, Refugee, and Internationally Adopted Children.

Immigrant children are a diverse group and include refugees, asylees, and internationally adopted children. They have various infectious disease risk factors, depending on conditions within their country of origin, journey, and current living conditions. Infectious disease screening should take place within the framework of a comprehensive medical evaluation in the medical home. Some screening is recommended for all immigrant children including hepatitis B, syphilis, HIV, tuberculosis, and intestinal parasites; other diseases can be tested for based on individual risks. Although guidelines and

Psychologists' Perspectives on the Psychological Suffering of Refugee Patients in Brazil.

Worldwide there are 79.5 million displaced people, many of which face war, violence, tragic flights and struggles in host countries. Research shows augmented prevalence rates of mental disorders among refugees internationally, but little is known about refugee mental health in Latin American countries. Furthermore, only a few studies have taken into consideration the knowledge of clinical psychologists who treat refugee patients. The present study examines the experiences of 32 psychologists in Brazil regarding their refugee patients' psychological suffering and mental disorders. Semi-structur
