Environmental evaluation of different variants of the chromium compound production model using chromic waste.

This work presents research results on the evaluation of environmental effects of utilizing chromic waste in chromium compound production processes. The comprehensive evaluation of three chromium compound production models takes into consideration the total cumulated hazard coefficients. The implementation of the new chromium compound production model into industrial practice in 1999 allows the hazard to the natural environment to decrease by 75% in relation to the hazard caused by the old production model used until 1995. The coefficient of the target chromium compound production model was 19

The leaching of inorganic species from activated carbons produced from waste tyre rubber.

Waste tyre rubber can be used as a precursor for the production of high quality activated carbons. However, there is concern that inorganic impurities present in the rubber feed may restrict their use in liquid phase applications with high purity requirements. This paper presents an investigation of the presence and the leaching of inorganic species from activated carbons derived from waste tyre rubber. For the purpose of this work, a number of carbons were produced, characterised for their BET surface area and analysed for their inorganic composition. Subsequently, a number of tests were perf

Sorption and biodegradation of vapor-phase organic compounds with wastewater sludge and food waste compost.

To test the possible use of composted food waste and wastewater sludge as biofilters to treat gas-phase volatile organic compounds (VOCs), batch experiments were conducted with an isolated strain that could degrade aromatic compounds under aerobic conditions. A benzene and trichloroethylene (TCE) mixture was used as the gas-phase pollutant in experiments with composted food waste, sludge, and soil. Under aerobic conditions, benzene was degraded as a primary substrate and TCE was degraded cometabolically, with water contents varying from 6 to 60% (volume of water added/volume of solid). Optimal

Beyond the runway - Quantifying the climate impact of international catering waste.

International flights generate substantial volumes of waste that pose a unique environmental challenge, as strict biosecurity regulations require it to be disposed of through destructive methods across the world. However, the impact on the world's climate of managing this waste remains unquantified and largely disregarded in aviation mitigation discussions. This study presents the first analysis of the contribution of cabin waste management to climate change, developing a novel methodology that combines passenger movement data with waste generation factors to quantify volumes, composition, and

Carbon Dioxide-Driven anaerobic digestion with Zero-Valent iron for enhanced biomethanation of food waste.

To improve biomethanation in the anaerobic digestion of food waste (FW), carbon dioxide (CO2) and zero-valent iron (ZVI) were applied, and the impact of varying dosages and injection times was assessed. The conditions of 1 g/L ZVI and 3-min CO2 injection resulted in significant methane yield improvements, with FW4 reaching a peak of 624.4 mL/gVS at day 18, 44.7 % higher than the control (FW0). Hydrolysis efficiencies for proteins, polysaccharides, and lipids increased by 41 %, 65 %, and 57 %, while acidogenesis efficiencies rose by 48 %, 44 %, and 24 %, respectively. Additionally, CO2 optimize

Analysis of household waste production in Ecuador: Limitations for sustainable management in local communities.

Municipal solid waste management is one of the greatest challenges for environmental sustainability and well-being in developing countries, where the infrastructure and financial resources required to carry out such services are often lacking. The design of solutions that adequately respond to local needs must be based on quality information about the quantity and composition of the generated waste and current management practices. This study evaluated domestic waste generation and its management in 81 communities in Ecuador based on sampling at the source and population surveys. An average ho

Social supermarkets, nutritional implications and healthy eating: exploration of members and their views.

BACKGROUND: The Covid-19 pandemic has increased the need for food support but simultaneously enabled substantial innovation in food support provision, including the evolution of social supermarkets (SSM). These allow consumers to choose from a range of low-cost products, minimise stigma and reduce food waste. Data from members of two Sussex SSM were gathered for their perspectives and experiences, as well as potential nutritional implications of the SSM. METHODS: Questionnaires administered face-to-face during site visits and optional telephone interviews were used. Data were collected during

Generation and characterization of bio-oil obtained from the slow pyrolysis of cooked food waste at various temperatures.

Bio-oil was generated from slow pyrolysis of cooked food waste (CFW) at various temperatures (300-500 °C). Then NMR analysis was used as a qualitative means to characterize the bio-oil for its nature (aliphatic or aromatic), and then the compounds were confirmed and quantified using the GC-MS. This analysis indicated that the pyrolysis at low temperature (300 °C) mainly generated carbonyl compounds (Aldehydes, Ketones, Esters, and Oxo groups), Levoglucosans, and Furans (17%, 24%, and 38%, respectively) considered as typical pyrolysis chemicals. Similarly, the pyrolysis at medium temperature (4

Effects of Different Energy Substrates and Nickel and Cadmium Ions on the Growth of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Its Application for Disposal of Ni-Cd Batteries.

In the present work, the effects of different energy substrates and nickel ions (Ni2+) and cadmium ions (Cd2+) on the growth of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (A. ferrooxidans) were investigated. Ferrous sulphate (FeSO4) was the optimum energy substrate for A. ferrooxidans growth, among the selected substrates. When cultured together with FeSO4 and sulphur (S), A. ferrooxidans first oxidised the ferrous ions (Fe2+), and the S was utilised as the concentration of Fe2+ decreased. After adapting to culture with Ni2+ and Cd2+, A. ferrooxidans presented good tolerance to both ions, with the maximum

Conjunctive and mineralization impact of municipal solid waste compost and inorganic fertilizer on lysimeter and pot studies.

Objectives of the present study were to investigate the physico-chemical properties of municipal solid waste (MSW)-enriched compost and its effect on nutrient mineralization and subsequent plant growth. The enrichment of MSW compost by inorganic salts enhanced the humification rate and reduced the carbon nitrogen (C/N) ratio in less time than control compost. The chemical properties of compost, C/N ratio, humic acid, fulvic acid, degree of polymerization and humification index revealed the significant correlation amid properties. A laboratory-scale experiment evaluated the conjunctive effect o

Microbial destruction of cyanide wastes in gold mining: process review.

Microbial destruction of cyanide and its related compounds is one of the most important biotechnologies to emerge in the last two decades for treating process and tailings solutions at precious metals mining operations. Hundreds of plant and microbial species (bacteria, fungi and algae) can detoxify cyanide quickly to environmentally acceptable levels and into less harmful by-products. Full-scale bacterial processes have been used effectively for many years in commercial applications in North America. Several species of bacteria can convert cyanide under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions u

PH and grain-size variation in leaching tests with bricks made of harbour sediments compared to commercial bricks.

Bricks made of 50% wt. harbour sediments from Bremen, Germany, harbour sediment and nine commercial bricks made of common raw materials were leached in various experiments. The harbour sediment is polluted with heavy metals, e.g. Zn, Cd, Pb and organic compounds, e.g. tributyltin. To assess the environmental impact in the potential use of sediment bricks we consider the influence of pH (4-11) and grain size (50-30 000 microm), the two prime variables in the life-cycle of the bricks. Leachability of trace contaminants increased at acidic pH values and remained low at neutral and alkaline pH val
