While the benefits of fluoride in preventing dental caries are well-established, concerns about its potential toxicity at high intake levels are rising. This review investigates the link between chronic fluoride exposure and reproductive health outcomes at the molecular level, focusing on population growth and child sex ratios in the fluorosis-affected and non-fluorosis regions. The exploration of the detrimental effects of fluoride on both male and female reproductive systems is necessary. In males, hormonal variations, alterations in spermatogenesis, capacitation, and sperm motility using mo

This edition of the journal publishes two papers1,2 and several others in previous editions of the journal, that establish an interlink between sexual and reproductive health and mental health in women. Given the rising incidence of mental ill-health especially in young women, it is important to flag this relationship and to emphasize the need for further research and related interventions. This editorial synthesizes the evidence from previous studies and underscores the need for integrated care that addresses the interlinked physical and mental health needs of women.

BACKGROUND: Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) services remains a significant public health challenge, particularly in rural and underserved areas. The Health Bazaar initiative was introduced as a community-based intervention to improve SRH service utilization and family planning uptake among reproductive-age women in Ethiopia. This study evaluates the effectiveness of the Health Bazaar model in improving access to SRH services in intervention (Health Bazaar) compared to non-intervention areas (running SRH services in the routine health system).
METHODS: A comparative cross-sectio

BACKGROUND: Provision of adolescent-friendly Health services (AFHS) at lower primary health care centres (PHCs) is a core strategy for improving access and health outcomes of adolescents. In this study we assessed the health facility-based prevalence of repeat adolescent pregnancies and the capacity of PHCs (Health centres (HC) level III and IV) to provide AFHS in Uganda.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study between April and May 2023 involving 43 healthcare facilities (33 HC III and 10 HC IV) across 4 districts in Southwestern Uganda. Using pretested structured questionnaires, we in

PURPOSE: To describe women's preferences for reproductive health providers as sources of primary and mental health care.
METHODS: This is secondary data analysis of the Women's Health Care Experiences and Preferences Study, an Internet survey conducted in September 2013 of 1,078 women aged 18 to 55 randomly sampled from a U.S. national probability panel. We estimated women's preferred and usual sources of care (reproductive health providers, generalists, other) for various primary care and mental health care services using weighted statistics and multiple logistic regression.
MAIN FINDINGS:

The age at which a female reaches sexual maturity is critical in determining her future reproductive health and success. Thus, a worldwide decline in menarcheal age (timing of first menstrual period) may have serious long-term consequences. Early menarcheal timing (first menstrual period before age 12) can have a negative effect on fecundity, as well as the quality and quantity of offspring, and may consequently influence population growth or decline. In this paper, we apply an evolutionary framework to modern human health, and assess both proximate and ultimate consequences of declining menar

The Special Programme of Research in Human Reproduction (HRP), co-sponsored by the UNDP, UNFPA, WHO, and the World Bank, is celebrating 40 years of activities with an expansion of its mandate and new co-sponsors. When it began, in 1972, the main focus was on evaluating the acceptability, effectiveness, and safety of existing fertility-regulating methods, as well as developing new, improved modalities for family planning. In 1994, HRP not only made major contributions to the Plan of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD); it also broadened its scope of work

Physiological levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) play an important regulatory role through various signaling transduction pathways in folliculogenesis, oocyte maturation, endometrial cycle, luteolysis, implantation, embryogenesis, and pregnancy. Persistent and elevated generation of ROS leads to a disturbance of redox potential that in turn causes oxidative stress (OS). Our literature review captures the role of ROS in modulating a range of physiological functions and pathological processes affecting the female reproductive life span and even thereafter (i.e., menopause). The role of OS i

This study examines how the criminalization of women's drug use during their reproductive years affects their access to reproductive healthcare, legal treatment, and psychosocial wellbeing. Using a qualitative research design, the study employed semi-structured interviews with women affected by drug-related criminalization, healthcare providers, legal professionals, and policy-related stakeholders in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, China. The findings reveal that criminalization functions as a major barrier to timely healthcare access by generating fear, stigma, and mistrust of formal instit

The HIV epidemic has changed the face of women's reproductive health across southern Africa. In some circles, there have been calls for restrictions on women's reproductive rights, focusing particularly on the spread of HIV between sexual partners and from mother to child. However, during the past decade, public health attention and resources for the clinical care of HIV-infected individuals living in Africa have led to advances in women's reproductive health services. As many programs have recognized that effective HIV care and treatment services must link to other areas of primary care, key

Effects of trichloroethylene (TCE) on male reproduction and fertility have been studied in mice and rats, and assessed in workers exposed to TCE. Only limited evidence exists for any male reproductive effects in rats or humans. The human studies of TCE male reproductive effects failed to provide much useful information for risk assessment. First, the TCE-specific studies are limited in group size, scope, and typically provide no data on dose, so dose-response assessment is impossible. In other studies, TCE is only one of many solvents identified in the workplace, such that the confounding expo

Background HIV-positive women in the United States can have healthy pregnancies and avoid transmitting HIV to their children. Yet, little is known about the extent to which HIV care providers' reproductive health practices match women's pregnancy desires. Accordingly, we explored young HIV-positive women's pregnancy desires and reproductive health behaviors and examined reproductive health information offered by HIV care clinics. Methods A mixed-method analysis was conducted using data from a 14-site Adolescent Medicine Trials Network (ATN) study. We conducted descriptive statistics on data fr

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease prevalent among women of reproductive age and has important implications for fertility, pregnancy, and offspring health. This review summarizes current evidence on the bidirectional interactions between asthma and female reproductive physiology, with particular emphasis on fertility and pregnancy.
RECENT FINDINGS: Perimenstrual asthma represents a distinct phenotype associated with greater disease severity and increased healthcare utilization. Asthma impairs fertility and is associated with longer time to conception, higher rates of i

Seminal fluid is more than a vehicle for sperm transport. It contains a complex mix of immune-regulatory cytokines that, together with other bioactive factors, influence sperm maturation and survival, and interact with female reproductive tract cells and tissues to facilitate conception and stimulate female receptivity to pregnancy. Cytokines synthesized in the seminal vesicles, prostate, and other male accessory glands come into contact with sperm at ejaculation, and upon intromission are delivered to the cervix and uterus in soluble form, as cargo of seminal extracellular vesicles, or in phy

The number of pollutants stemming from anthropogenic chemicals is increasing every year. Some of them act similarly to hormones and are referred to as endocrine-disrupting chemicals or endocrine disruptors. In this group, bisphenol A (BPA) is well characterized as a xenoestrogen and is known to affect human health. BPA is crucial to the production of plastic, a material that has revolutionized and facilitated daily life. Nevertheless, the use of BPA is currently being limited, and consequently, new BPA analogs are under development. However, both BPA and its analogs can be released into the en
