High-intensity intermittent inspiratory and abdominal muscle combined training in respiratory, swallowing and systemic muscles of healthy adults.

BACKGROUND: Low-intensity continuous inspiratory muscle training improves its strength. The abdominal muscles are the main expiratory muscles, and their training may improve expiratory muscle strength. Respiratory muscle strength regulates coughing effectiveness, which is critical for pneumonia management. In older people, risk factors for the development of pneumonia were respiratory muscle weakness and swallowing impairment. Currently, the impact of high-intensity intermittent inspiratory and abdominal muscle combined training on the respiratory, swallowing, and systemic muscles is unclear.

[Assessment of the respiratory muscles strength at patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with various forms of comorbidity].

UNLABELLED: The respiratory muscles (RM) strength is the main indicator of their functional state. However, RM strength is not used as criteria for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) stratification. AIM: To evaluate the RM power of COPD patients with various variants of comorbidity and to determine the role of comorbidity in the development of respiratory muscle dysfunction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: RM strength of 64 men with exacerbation of COPD was studied. The severity of comorbidity was assessed by the Charlson index. Depending on the prevalence of comorbidity, patients were divi

[Weak respiratory muscles as a first sign of ALS: symptoms may put the physician on the wrong track].

BACKGROUND: Patients with decreased exercise tolerance and orthopnoea are often referred to an internist, a cardiologist or a pulmonologist. These symptoms can also be caused by weakness of the respiratory muscles, as an indication of a neuromuscular disease. If these symptoms are not recognized as such, this may result in a delay in timely diagnosis. CASE DESCRIPTION: An 82-year-old man had suffered from decreased exercise tolerance for 18 months. For the last months he had been sleeping upright and had lost 20 kg in weight. Analyses by the cardiologist and the internist had not led to a def

Preoperative respiratory muscle strength, muscle mass, and respiratory sarcopenia as predictors of postoperative pulmonary complications after thoracic and cardiac surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) are common after thoracic, upper abdominal, and cardiac surgery and are associated with adverse outcomes. Respiratory sarcopenia (RS), characterized by coexisting reductions in respiratory muscle mass and strength, may represent a clinically relevant prognostic phenotype, but its prognostic value remains uncertain. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess whether low preoperative respiratory muscle mass, reduced strength, or their coexistence as RS or probable RS predicts PPCs after thoracic and cardiac surgery.
