Who may benefit (and who may not) from active ageing? Empirical evidence from European older caregivers, volunteers, and super-helpers.

BACKGROUND: Against the backdrop of the multidimensionality of the active ageing concept, caregiving and volunteering are recognized as two important domains. Although active ageing is in general considered a preventive tool conducive to positive health outcomes, there is a paucity of studies on health characteristicsoutcomes regarding older adults who are both caregivers and volunteers, by considering their transitions into and from this "double social role". This is even more so when it comes to studies employing a longitudinal approach. The study investigates, longitudinally, transitions of

Caregiver perceptions of the impact of Dravet syndrome on the family, current supports and hopes and fears for the future: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Dravet syndrome (DS) is a Developmental and Epileptic Encephalopathy (DEE) with onset typically in infancy. Seizures are pharmaco-resistant, and neurodevelopment is compromised in almost all children. There is limited data on the impact of the condition on the family, support needs and hopes and fears in Sweden. METHODS: Interviews were undertaken with the caregivers of 36 of 48 (75%) living children with DS in Sweden focusing on the perceived impact on the family, current supports and hopes and fears for the future. Data from the interviews were analyzed by two raters using refle

Factors associated with functioning style and coping strategies of families with a child with an autism spectrum disorder.

A survey of parents/caregivers of a child with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) was conducted to examine the relationship between ASD characteristics, family functioning and coping strategies. Having a child with ASD places considerable stress on the family. Primary caregivers of a child with ASD from a regional and rural area in Victoria, Australia (N = 53) were surveyed concerning their child with ASD, family functioning (adaptability and cohesion), marital satisfaction, self-esteem and coping strategies. Results suggest that these caregivers had healthy self-esteem, although they reported

Radical hospitality: Innovative programming to build community and meet the needs of people who use drugs at a government-sanctioned overdose prevention site in San Francisco, California.

BACKGROUND: The Tenderloin Center (TLC), a multi-service center where people could receive or be connected to basic needs, behavioral health care, housing, and medical services, was open in San Francisco for 46 weeks in 2022. Within a week of operation, services expanded to include an overdose prevention site (OPS), also known as safe consumption site. OPSs have operated internationally for over three decades, but government-sanctioned OPSs have only recently been implemented in the United States. We used ethnographic methods to understand the ways in which a sanctioned OPS, situated in a mult

Considerations for recommending extended use and limited reuse of filtering facepiece respirators in health care settings.

Public health organizations, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), are increasingly recommending the use of N95 filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) in health care settings. For infection control purposes, the usual practice is to discard FFRs after close contact with a patient ("single use"). However, in some situations, such as during contact with tuberculosis patients, limited FFR reuse (i.e., repeated donning and doffing of the same FFR by the same person) is practiced. A related practice, extended use, involves wearing the same FFR for multiple patient encounters

Current research status on the psychological situation of parents of children with congenital heart disease.

Congenital heart diseases (CHD) are a leading cause of morbidity in children with a high impact on the psychological health of parents. Possible short-term and long-term psychological problems among parents are addressed in the current paper. The diagnosis of CHD paired with subsequent surgical and interventional treatment and prolonged hospital stays cause acute psychological distress and can lead to posttraumatic stress disorders (PTSD). As the disease course progresses, the impact on parents' health tends to decrease, but the risk of developing long-term psychological issues remains high. S

Disparities in Delayed Discharge Among Patients Experiencing Homelessness.

IMPORTANCE: Patients experiencing homelessness face particular barriers to hospital discharge, which may result in an alternate level of care (ALC) designation, a delayed discharge status describing patients occupying beds while not requiring the intensity of care provided in the hospital. Evidence quantifying disparities in ALC designation among patients with recent experience of homelessness relative to matched comparators is limited. OBJECTIVE: To compare ALC rates among hospitalized patients with a recent experience of homelessness and matched patients from neighborhoods with the lowest l

Core outcome set for quality of life of family caregivers of adults with epilepsy: A Delphi consensus study.

OBJECTIVE: Epilepsy significantly affects daily functioning and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of those living with the condition. Less is known about HRQOL of family caregivers of adults with epilepsy, yet the functioning of patients and caregivers is interlinked, and caregivers' unmet support needs are high. A consensus-based core outcome set for caregivers' HRQOL can guide more structured caregiver assessments and aid timely intervention. METHODS: A three-round Delphi study was conducted to determine outcomes most important for family caregivers' HRQOL. Three stakeholder groups wer

Health-related quality of life among caregivers of children with cerebral palsy in Sub-Saharan Africa: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of permanent movement and posture disorders that cause activity limitations, resulting from non-progressive disturbances in the developing fetal or infant brain. Caregivers of children with CP reported higher levels of stress, despair, and back discomfort. In Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), caregivers of children with CP encounter complex, multidimensional challenges. While individual studies have examined the experiences of CP caregivers in SSA, no comprehensive review has yet synthesized evidence on their Health Related Quality of Life (HRQOL). Therefore, this SRMA a

Caregiver self-efficacy and associated factors among caregivers of patients with dementia with Lewy bodies and caregivers of patients with Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is characterized by neuropsychiatric symptoms, which can be distressing to caregivers. However, little is known about their subjective distress in terms of caregiver self-efficacy. Thus, we examined the differences in caregiver self-efficacy and their associated factors between DLB and Alzheimer's disease (AD) caregivers. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive questionnaire for DLB and AD caregivers. Caregiver self-efficacy was evaluated using three domains (Self-Efficacy for Obtaining Respite: SE-OR, Self-Efficacy for Responding to Disruptive Patien

OBJECTIVE: To describe the longitudinal association between disease severity, time established in clinical treatment, and caregiver burden in a community-based patient population diagnosed with pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS). METHODS: The study included an observational longitudinal cohort design, with Caregiver Burden Inventories (CBIs) collected between April 2013 and November 2016 at the Stanford PANS multidisciplinary clinic. Impact of statutory revisions to family-petitioned civil commitment in South Korea.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined the impact of statutory revisions in 2016 which aimed to enhance procedural justice within the process of civil commitment for persons diagnosed with mental illnesses (PDMI) in South Korea. These changes included requiring that PDMI pose a threat of danger to self or others and the need for treatment simultaneously as criteria for petitioning civil commitment. Additionally, the revision established a public entity to oversee the legitimacy of petitions to involuntarily commit PDMI to inpatient treatment. Despite these statutory changes, families providing care
