Retinal angiomas are rare tumors that develop within the vascular bed of the retina. Their occurrence may be sporadic or as part of the multisystem disorder called von Hippel-Lindau disease. It is well established in literature that retinal angiomas have a natural history of evolving as small aneurysmal dilatations and progressing to vision-threatening retinal detachments. Several approaches to the management of these angiomas have been reported in the literature, but it is difficult to decipher which modality is best suited for which type of angioma. A classification of retinal angiomas is pr

An 11-year-old patient was diagnosed with tuberous sclerosis complex based on retinal and cutaneous findings and confirmed by genetic testing. Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) demonstrated subtle solid intraretinal tumors that focally replaced the inner retina and displaced the outer retinal layers. OCT angiography demonstrated prominent intrinsic vascularity but no feeder vessels. [Ophthalmic Surg Lasers Imaging Retina. 2017;48:756-758.].

INTRODUCTION: Retinoblastomas of the eye are a cause of childhood blindness and have a high rate of mortality, as well as a hereditary mode of transmission. Other conditions that mimic retinoblastomas are known as pseudoretinoblastomas, and are managed differently. Although pseudoretinoblastoma and the accuracy of retinoblastoma diagnosis have been reviewed in Caucasian patients, published studies in Asian patients are lacking. The purpose of this article is to report our experience with pseudoretinoblastomas in two major ophthalmological centres in Asia.
METHODS: A case series of 28 enucleat

Retinoblastoma (RB) is the most common pediatric ocular malignancy resulting from biallelic inactivation of the RB1 gene and can be fatal if not treated. With advances in chemotherapy and earlier diagnosis, the mortality rates in developed nations such as USA, Europe and Canada, have reduced to 3-5 %. Subsequently, the clinical focus has shifted to preserving visual acuity in these countries, whereas in developing nations, mortality rates still range from 40 % to 70 %. In India, about 70 % of the children presenting with RB in the clinic have already progressed to category D or E tumors. Since

BACKGROUND: Retinoblastoma is a rare childhood ophthalmic cancer that requires frequent eye examinations under anaesthesia and painful or distressing procedures. This can cause significant anxiety for children and their families.
OBJECTIVE: We evaluated a Starlight Children's Foundation programme, 'Captains on Call', at the Queensland Children's Hospital, which aims to provide positive distraction and reduce stress, anxiety and pain during the perioperative journey for children in the retinoblastoma treatment pathway. This study examined the impact of the programme on the perioperative experi

Of 500 consecutive patients referred to the Ocular Oncology Service at Wills Eye Hospital with the diagnosis of possible retinoblastoma, 288 (58%) were found on clinical evaluation to have retinoblastoma and 212 (42%) had lesions that simulated retinoblastoma. A total of 23 different conditions accounted for the 212 pseudoretinoblastomas. Three most common pseudoretinoblastomas were: persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (28%), Coats' disease (16%), and presumed ocular toxocariasis (16%). Congenital cataract and retinopathy of prematurity accounted for a much lower percent of pseudoretinobl

BACKGROUND: Retinoblastoma is the most common intraocular malignancy occurring in children. It can metastasize to the regional lymph nodes, central nervous system and distant organs usually the bones and bone marrow and very rarely to the soft tissue. Here, we report a case of unilateral retinoblastoma in a 4-year-old girl accompanied by a large metastasis of the parotid and submandibular glands that developed about 6 months previously and gradually increased in size 5 months after enucleation of the left eye.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 4-year-old girl with a history of unilateral retinoblastoma pr

Introduction: In vivo modeling of intraocular neoplasms remains challenging due to the limitations of conventional methods, such as the poor viability of xenografted B16 melanoma cells, the need for immunosuppression, and discrepancies between histopathological features and those of human uveal melanoma. Developing a biologically relevant, reproducible model for transscleral photodynamic therapy (TS-PDT) using chlorin-based photosensitizers is essential, particularly to assess radiation penetration depth and the safety profile of the method. Methods: A model of an intraocular mass was created

BACKGROUND Breakpoint cluster region (BCR)-Abelson murine leukemia (ABL1) and Janus Kinase-2 (JAK2) mutations have been thought to be mutually exclusive in myeloproliferative neoplasms (MNPs), but recent data suggest that they can occur together. CASE REPORT A 68-year-old man was referred to the hematology clinic because of an elevated white blood cell count. His medical history included type II diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and retinal hemorrhage. Fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis of the bone marrow was positive for BCR-ABL1 in 66/100 cells. Conventional cytogenetics was positive

Biallelic pathogenic variants (PVs) in MUTYH cause MUTYH-Associated Polyposis (MAP), which displays phenotypic overlap with other hereditary colorectal cancer (CRC) syndromes including Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) and Lynch syndrome. We report the phenotypic spectrum of MAP in the context of multi-gene hereditary cancer panel testing. Genetic testing results and clinical histories were reviewed for individuals with biallelic MUTYH PVs detected by panel testing at a single commercial molecular diagnostic laboratory. Biallelic MUTYH PVs were identified in 82 individuals (representing 0.2

Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) includes facial, leptomeningeal and choroidal hemangioma. The retinal vasculature is essentially normal. Rare cases of retinal vascular tortuosity and arterio-venous malformations have been reported. We report two cases with rare concomitant retinal vascular abnormalities along with SWS. Both the patients had nevus flammeus, hemifacial hypertrophy, and choroidal hemangioma. In one case, retinal cavernous hemangioma was seen in the affected eye. The other case revealed retinal neovascularization secondary to proliferative diabetic retinopathy in the eye with choroida

Background and Objectives: Here, we report the anatomical and functional outcomes of Pars Plana Vitrectomy (PPV) with feeder vessel ligation, with or without endoresection in cases of retinal detachment (RD) secondary to retinal capillary hemangioblastoma (RCH). Materials and Methods: This retrospective observational study included 12 eyes with RD secondary to RCH. Based on the location of the lesion and the features of the RD, eyes were divided into two groups. Seven eyes with RCH located in Zone 2 or Zone 3, associated with tractional retinal detachment (TRD), underwent PPV with feeder vesse

Torpedo maculopathy (TM) is a rare congenital defect of the retina pigment epithelium, which always localizes to the temporal fovea. It is most commonly unilateral and often occurs in patients without any relevant disease. Classic finding is a flat, hypopigmented, oval lesion, resembling a 'torpedo,' with a wedge-shaped tail extending outward and directed toward the foveola. Visual acuity is generally unaffected due to the central fovea is not involved and this lesions remain stable. Therefore, when it accompanied with a posterior segment disease, we should make differential diagnosis to avoid

A 34-year-old Caucasian woman with a past medical history of hypertension presented with acute floaters in the right eye (OD) for 1 week. Best-corrected visual acuity (VA) was 20/20 in both eyes. Fundus examination OD (Figure 1) revealed a retinal hemangioblastoma (RH) in the temporal midperiphery with a prominent feeding artery and draining vein. A retinal arterial microaneurysm (RAM) was noted within the feeding artery, and subretinal hemorrhage with a cuff of fluid was present. Fundus autofluorescence (Figure 2) showed hypoautofluorescence in the area of the RH, RAM, and subretinal hemorrha
