The definition of "Vitamin D" encompasses a group of fat-soluble steroid compounds of different origins with similar chemical structures and the same biological effects. Vitamin D deficiency and/or a defect in the process of its synthesis or transport predispose individuals to several types of rickets. In addition to cholecalciferol, ergocalciferol, and vitamins D3 and D2, there are also active metabolites for the treatment of this condition which are commercially available. Calcitriol and aphacalcidiol are active metabolites that do not require the renal activation step, which is required wit

Kurt Huldschinsky (1883-1940) was a German pediatrician who was one of the international leaders in the field of rickets research between the two world wars. After his medical studies, he served at the Kaiserin-Auguste-Victoria-Haus in Berlin and at the University Children's Hospital in Vienna, among other places. After World War I, he worked with the famous orthopedist Konrad Biesalski at the Oskar-Helene-Heim for the healing and education of frail children in Berlin. Here he was the first to prove that exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from mercury vapor lamps ("artificial sunlight") co

Hypophosphatemic rickets is a hereditary disease of childhood that affects bone metabolism. Patients with this disease can have poor bony healing at growth centers due to impaired mineralization of the cartilaginous bone plates. The orthopedic literature has shown appropriate long bone healing in patients with rickets who are undergoing concurrent medical management. However, there has never been a report of successful osteotomy or fracture of the maxillomandibular skeleton in a patient with rickets with documented radiographic and clinical resolution. This report describes a case of successfu

Lamellar ichthyosis (LI) is a rare genetic condition that affects the skin, with an incidence of less than 1:300 000 in different parts of the world. This report describes a case of a 5-year-old girl with LI and rickets presenting with premature loss of 51, 52, 61, 62 and 71, grade II mobility in 72, 73, 81, 82 and 83 along with loss of supporting bone with 53, 63, 72, 73, 82 and 83. This is the first report describing oral manifestations of this combination of LI and rickets.

OBJECTIVES: A high prevalence of rickets of unknown aetiology has been reported in Chakaria, Bangladesh. Classically, rickets is caused by vitamin D deficiency but increasing evidence from Africa and Asia points towards other nutritional deficiencies or excessive exposure to some metals. The aim of this study was to investigate the aetiology of rickets in rural Bangladeshi children.
METHODS: 64 cases with rickets-like deformities were recruited at first presentation together with age-sex-village matched controls. Data and sample acquisition included anthropometry, radiographs, fasted plasma a

Defective mineralization of the growth plate and preformed osteoid result in rickets and osteomalacia, respectively. The leading cause of rickets worldwide is solar vitamin D deficiency and/or dietary calcium deficiency collectively termed as nutritional rickets. Vitamin D deficiency predominates in high-latitude countries in at-risk groups (dark skin, reduced sun exposure, infants and pregnant and lactating women) but is emerging in some tropical countries due to sun avoidance behaviour. Calcium deficiency predominates in tropical countries, especially in the malnourished population. Nutritio

Rickets is a condition in which there is failure of the normal mineralisation (osteomalacia) of growing bone. Whilst osteomalacia may be present in adults, rickets cannot occur. It is generally caused by a lack of mineral supply, which can either occur as a result of the deficiency of calcium (calciopaenic rickets, now known as parathyroid hormone-dependent rickets) or of phosphate (phosphopaenic rickets, now called FGF23-dependent rickets). Renal disorders may also interfere with the process of mineralisation and cause rickets. Only parathyroid hormone-dependent rickets and distal renal tubul

CONTEXT: Nutritional rickets is caused by impaired mineralization of growing bone. The effect of nutritional rickets on areal bone mineral density (aBMD) has not been established.
OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to determine if aBMD is lower in children with active rickets than in healthy control children. We expected that the reduction in aBMD would vary between the radial and ulnar metaphyses near the growth plates and the proximal diaphyses.
DESIGN: Case-control study.
SETTING: Primary care outpatient department of a teaching hospital in Jos, Nigeria.
PARTICIPANTS: Nigerian children with r

Lamellar ichthyosis (LI) is an autosomal recessive disorder rarely associated with systemic organ involvement and development of carcinoma. Rickets has occasionally been described with LI owing to impaired vitamin D synthesis following altered keratinization. There has also been a high association of cutaneous cancers in patients of LI. We as Dermatologists should therefore be very meticulous while doing a full work up of these patients. We report here a case of LI associated with rickets and carcinoma of the hypopharynx.

This study was conducted to determine the causes and clinical presentations of osteomalacia/rickets in adolescents seen at the King Abdulaziz Medical City (KAMC), Riyadh. Because osteomalacia and rickets constitute the same entity, the term osteomalacia will be used for future discussion. A retrospective file review was performed on all adolescents (10-16 years) with osteomalacia, defined as alkaline phosphatase levels ≥500 IU/L, seen at the KAMC, Riyadh, from 2000 to 2006. We recorded the signs and symptoms, dietary history and amount of sun exposure at presentation. A total of 135 patients w

We wish to report two cases of rickets due to vitamin D deficiency secondary to underlying ichthyotic skin disorder. The first case is of an 8-year-old male with history of multiple fluid-filled lesions over the body that would rupture to heal with thickening and scaling of skin, suggestive of epidermolytic hyperkeratosis, and the second is of a 14-year-old female with thick, large, quadrilateral scales over the extremities and back clinically consistent with lamellar ichthyosis. Both showed improvement with parenteral vitamin D3 and oral calcium supplements in addition to topical emollients.

N-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen (PINP) is a marker of newly formed type I collagen. However, its role in hypophosphatemic rickets/osteomalacia has not yet been established. Metabolic bone markers were examined in patients with oncogenic osteomalacia (OOM) and X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets (XLH), and in healthy controls. OOM and XLH patients were found to have hypophosphatemia secondary to elevated levels of serum fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23). OOM patients had reduced levels of 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D (1,25D) compared with XLH patients and healthy controls, despite atte

A case is presented of a child from rural New Zealand with vitamin-D-resistant rickets. He underwent extensive treatment and is now partially dentate. The child may have received substantially different care if appropriate dental specialists had practised locally, although, in the long term, his outcome may not have been different. Early medical diagnosis of rickets and prompt preventive dental care may be useful in reducing spontaneous pulp death in either the primary or permanent dentitions.

UNLABELLED: X-linked hereditary hypophosphatemic rickets can induce various multiplanar deformities of the lower limb. We evaluated our ability to correct these deformities and assessed complications and recurrence rates in 10 children (eight girls and a pair of twin boys) followed from early childhood to skeletal maturity. We performed 37 corrective operations in 10 children. Depending on the patient's age, external fixation was used in 53 segments: Kirschner wires in 18, DynaFix in three, the Taylor Spatial Frame device in 13, and the Ilizarov device in 19. Internal fixation with intramedull

Many children with rachitic deformities have been reported in southern coastal area of Bangladesh but the actual rate of prevalence was not known. A survey was conducted to determine the magnitude of rachitic problem among the children of Chakaria thana of Cox's Bazar district of Bangladesh. Nine hundred children between 1-15 years selected randomly from 30 villages of total 340 villages. Face to face interview of the parents was taken and the children were examined for evidences of rickets. Serum calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were estimated and radiology of limbs were done i
