Inter-parental conflict and children's academic attainment: a longitudinal analysis.

BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests a link between inter-parental conflict and children's psychological development. Most studies, however, have tended to focus on two broad indices of children's psychological adaptation (internalizing symptoms and externalizing problems) in considering the effects of inter-parental conflict on children's development. The present longitudinal study extends this body of research by considering the impact of inter-parental conflict on children's low academic attainment among a sample of 230 schoolchildren (age 11-13 years) living in the United Kingdom. Parental problem drinking, marital aggression, and child emotional insecurity: a longitudinal investigation.

OBJECTIVE: Marital aggression plays an important role in relations between parental problem drinking and child maladjustment. The purpose of the current study was to apply emotional security theory as a framework for understanding the role of marital aggression. METHOD: A community sample of 235 children in kindergarten participated once a year for 3 years. Parents completed measures of parental problem drinking and marital aggression, and children were interviewed about their emotional security reactions to marital conflict vignettes. RESULTS: Greater parental problem drinking was directly

Exploring a patient's shift from relative silence to verbal expressiveness: observations on an element of the analyst's participation.

By tracing a portion of close process of a patient's shifts from a relatively silent and inhibited stance to one in which he is beginning to verbalize more about his experience and fantasy, I will illustrate some tensions between the analyst's role as facilitating expressiveness and as occupying a place in the patient's internalized world. Since the analyst's functions as facilitator and as internal object (often an obstacle to the patient's expressiveness) are sometimes in conflict with one another, it is important for the analyst to be able to work internally with this conflict as he works w

Effects of parental mental health and family environment on impulsivity in preadolescents: a longitudinal ABCD study®.

INTRODUCTION: Impulsivity is a known risk factor for the development of substance use disorders and other psychiatric conditions that is influenced by both genetics and environment. Although research has linked parental mental health to children's impulsivity, potential mediators of this relationship remain understudied. The current investigation leverages the large national Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study to assess the mediating role of family conflict - an important social context for youth development - in the relationship between parental mental health and youth impulsi

From Gestalt boundary to psychological border: Perceptual structure constrains strategic planning and intention inference.

Why do humans so often become trapped in protracted conflicts even when peaceful settlement would be mutually beneficial? Across a series of experiments using a temporally extended territorial conflict game, we show that failures of intention inference play a central role in sustaining conflict and that payoff-irrelevant perceptual structure can substantially facilitate settlement. When conflict unfolds in a perceptually unstructured environment, participants' ability to distinguish defensive from offensive actions remains near chance, accompanied by a systematic bias toward inferring hostile

Two Independent Frontal Midline Theta Oscillations during Conflict Detection and Adaptation in a Simon-Type Manual Reaching Task.

One of the most firmly established factors determining the speed of human behavioral responses toward action-critical stimuli is the spatial correspondence between the stimulus and response locations. If both locations match, the time taken for response production is markedly reduced relative to when they mismatch, a phenomenon called the Simon effect. While there is a consensus that this stimulus-response (S-R) conflict is associated with brief (4-7 Hz) frontal midline theta (fmθ) complexes generated in medial frontal cortex, it remains controversial (1) whether there are multiple, simultaneo

The effect of transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) over bilateral parietal cortex in visual cross-modal conflicts.

In complex sensory environments, visual cross-modal conflicts often affect auditory performance. The inferior parietal cortex (IPC) is involved in processing visual conflicts, namely when cognitive control processes such as inhibitory control and working memory are required. This study investigated the effect of bilateral IPC tRNS on reducing visual cross-modal conflicts and explored whether its efficacy is dependent on the conflict type. Forty-four young adults were randomly allocated to receive either active tRNS (100-640 Hz, 2-mA for 20 min) or sham stimulation. Participants repeatedly perf

Glory or cage? A qualitative exploration of moral injury among retired college soldiers in Mainland China.

OBJECTIVE: Moral injury correlates significantly with posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and suicide, affecting soldiers' combat effectiveness and well-being. Despite growing awareness, it is an emerging research area, mainly studied in Western military cohorts. In China, research on its mechanisms and influencing factors in the unique social-cultural context is scarce. Retired college soldiers are crucial, being high-quality military reserves and national defense educators. Their moral injury during service impacts postretirement adaptation and college conscription. Thus, exploring th

Child abuse and automatic emotion regulation in children and adolescents.

Child abuse is associated with elevated risk for psychopathology. The current study examined the role of automatic emotion regulation as a potential mechanism linking child abuse with internalizing psychopathology. A sample of 237 youth aged 8-16 years and their caregivers participated. Child abuse severity was assessed by self-report questionnaires, and automatic emotion regulation was assessed using an emotional Stroop task designed to measure adaptation to emotional conflict. A similar task without emotional stimuli was also administered to evaluate whether abuse was uniquely associated wit

The Relationship Between Spousal Support and Nurse Burnout: A Parallel Dual-Mediator Model of Work-Family Conflict and Work-Family Facilitation.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether work-family conflict (WFC) and work-family facilitation (WFF) act as parallel statistical mediators in the association between spousal support (SS) and burnout among nurses. BACKGROUND: Nurse burnout represents a substantial management challenge, contributing to high staff turnover and diminished quality of patient care. SS is a potentially important protective resource for mitigating burnout. Nevertheless, the mechanisms through which SS influences nurse burnout, particularly via positive work-family spillover, remain understudied within nursing populations. ME

Bouncing back, holding steady, or wiser for wear? Uncovering and predicting trajectories of work-eldercare conflict and enrichment during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Accumulating longitudinal evidence suggests considerable stability in employees' work-family experiences over extended periods. However, this apparent stability may mask meaningful changes that earlier research could not detect, as prior studies often lacked designs suited to capturing shocks that alter the work-family interface and relied on long measurement intervals that can miss the adaptation process. To elucidate changes in employees' work-family interface and the resources that enable adaptation, we examine the work-eldercare interface among working informal caregivers of older adults i

Predictive genetic testing for neurodegenerative conditions: how should conflicting interests within families be managed?

Predictive genetic testing for a neurodegenerative condition in one individual in a family may have implications for other family members, in that it can reveal their genetic status. Herein a complex clinical case is explored where the testing wish of one family member was in direct conflict to that of another. The son of a person at 50% risk of an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative condition requested testing to reveal his genetic status. The main reason for the request was if he had the familial mutation, he and his partner planned to utilise preimplantation genetic diagnosis to prevent hi

Associations Among Religious Involvement, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, and Marital Functioning Within the U.S. Latino Population.

OBJECTIVE: The U.S. Latino community faces elevated risks for marital distress given stressors such as economic hardship and immigration-related challenges, but there has been limited research on protective and risk factors associated with marital outcomes among this population. Given the prominent role of religion in U.S. Latino communities and their elevated risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), this study examined associations among PTSD, religious involvement, and marital functioning, as well as whether religious involvement moderated the association between PTSD and marital funct

Sibling and Best Friend Conflict Resolution Strategies Among Mexican-origin Youth.

Sibling relationships evolve into a more egalitarian relationship dynamic resembling friendships during adolescence, potentially facilitating the transfer of interpersonal skills across relationships. This study investigates cross-relationship associations in conflict resolution strategies with siblings and friends. Research on family-peer linkages, largely focused on White populations, often overlook the role of siblings in other ethnoracial contexts. Drawing on social learning theory, we examined mean-level differences on conflict resolution strategy use with siblings versus friends and how

Women (Do Not) Belong Here: Gender-Work Identity Conflict among Female Police Officers.

The current paper examines antecedents and consequences of perceiving conflict between gender and work identities in male-dominated professions. In a study among 657 employees working in 85 teams in the police force, we investigated the effect of being different from team members in terms of gender on employees' perception that their team members see their gender identity as conflicting with their work identity. As expected in the police force as a male-dominated field, the results showed that gender-dissimilarity in the team was related to perceived gender-work identity conflict for women, an

Radiation hazards of the Ukraine nuclear power plants: how can international blood and marrow stem cell transplant societies help?

Any conflict in countries that process nuclear power plants raises concerns of the potential radiation injuries to the people in that region and beyond such as the current conflict in Ukraine. International healthcare organizations and societies should prepare for the potential scenarios of nuclear incidents. The Worldwide Network for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (WBMT) and its members, have recent experience preparing for this type of events such as the Fukushima incident in 2011. In this article, we discuss the risks of radiation exposure, current guidelines, and scientific evidence on h
