Rome V criteria for pediatric disorders of gut-brain interaction: key updates and clinical implications.

INTRODUCTION: The Rome criteria have provided the acclaimed global standard for diagnosing pediatric functional gastrointestinal disorders. With the release of Rome criteria V in 2026, the field has undergone a major transformation. The notable changes are the replacement of the term functional gastrointestinal disorders with disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBIs) and shifting from age-based subdivisions to an anatomical and symptom cluster framework. AREA COVERED: We reviewed pediatric Rome V documents and available evidence to cover both upper and lower gastrointestinal disorders of gut

Symptom bothersomeness and life interference support Rome clinical criteria as clinically relevant indicators of DGBI.

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional dyspepsia (FD) are common disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI). The Rome IV criteria are the gold standard for research when diagnosing DGBI. However, bothersomeness, or the degree to which symptoms are distressing or disruptive to a person's daily life, is a potential treatment-seeking motivator that is not assessed by the Rome criteria. The Rome Foundation developed and published diagnostic criteria for clinical practice that include bothersomeness. We aimed to evaluate these constructs via patient focus groups to determine what

Qualitative and Quantitative Comparison of Hippocampal Volumetric Software Applications: Do All Roads Lead to Rome?

Brain volumetric software is increasingly suggested for clinical routine. The present study quantifies the agreement across different software applications. Ten cases with and ten gender- and age-adjusted healthy controls without hippocampal atrophy (median age: 70; 25-75% range: 64-77 years and 74; 66-78 years) were retrospectively selected from a previously published cohort of Alzheimer's dementia patients and normal ageing controls. Hippocampal volumes were computed based on 3 Tesla T1-MPRAGE-sequences with FreeSurfer (FS), Statistical-Parametric-Mapping (SPM; Neuromorphometrics and Hammers

Rome IV Diagnostic Criteria for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders in Patients with Chronic Hepatitis C Virus.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) usually have different abdominal complaints without any organic lesions. The functional cause of these complaints is claimed in most patients. This study aimed to evaluate functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) in patients with chronic hepatitis C using Rome IV diagnostic criteria. METHODS: This study included 1506 participants (1006 patients with chronic HCV, and 500 controls). All individuals were subjected to taking thorough medical history, basic investigations (complete blood counts, liver and renal functions tests), interna

Helicobacter pylori infection and positive Rome IV criteria for functional dyspepsia in Romanian medical students.

Recent data suggest that the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection in Romania has been declining in the last 30 years. However, there are no studies regarding HP prevalence among medical students. The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of HP infection and assess the prevalence of dyspepsia in medical students and the relationship between dyspepsia and infection. We included 150 students from the Iuliu Hatieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Cluj-Napoca, Romania (102 females and 48 males, mean age 21 years). Each student completed a lifestyle questionna

The clinical overlap between functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome based on Rome III criteria.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies suggest considerable overlap between functional dyspepsia (FD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). To date, no surveys have been performed to investigate the clinical overlap between these two disorders using Rome III criteria. Our aim was to investigate the prevalence and risk factors for the overlap of FD and IBS based on Rome III criteria in a large clinical sample. METHODS: Consecutive patients at the general gastroenterology outpatient clinic were requested to complete a self-report questionnaire. FD and IBS were defined by Rome III criteria. RESULTS:

Deliveries, abortion and HIV-1 infection in Rome, 1989-1994. The Lazio AIDS Collaborative Group.

The prevalence of HIV-1 among women of reproductive age is currently estimated at the time they give birth. We assessed HIV-1 prevalence at the end of pregnancy, whether they delivered or had an induced or spontaneous abortion. Women admitted at the end of pregnancy to hospitals in the Lazio Region, Italy, were tested for antibodies to HIV-1. Consent for testing was granted by 97.1% of 218,357 subjects; women who did not consent were tested anonymously. The prevalences of infection were 0.34% in 1989, 0.38% in 1990, 0.28% in 1991, 0.23% in 1992, 0.28% in 1993, and 0.24% in 1994. Significantly

ROME, an Ancient Gene with a Novel Function in Vertebrates, Is a Key Modulator of Embryonal Development and Cancer Metastasis.

UNLABELLED: INAFM2, the human homolog of the Drosophila inaF, is a predicted membrane protein with no known function in vertebrates. Through an in vivo genome-wide transcriptional activation screen, we uncovered INAFM2 as a potent driver of metastasis, leading us to propose naming the vertebrate gene and its protein product ROME (regulator of metastasis). We discovered ROME's subcellular localization, posttranslational modifications, and transcriptional profiles related to its expression. ROME negatively regulates the canonical Wnt pathway by directly binding to β-catenin. Blocking rome expres

The role of essential oils as eco-friendly strategy to control biofilm collected in the Colosseum (Rome, Italy).

The control of biodeteriogenic microorganisms is essential for the management of heritage sites. Many conventional biocides are no longer available because they have lost their efficacy or have been withdrawn from the market due to their danger to humans and the environment. Therefore, new effective and sustainable biocides are needed, such as plant extracts that could be a good alternative. In this study, essential oils (EOs) of Ocimum basilicum L., Cinnamomum verum Presl, Lavandula angustifolia Mill., Origanum vulgare L., Thymus vulgaris L. and Melaleuca alternifolia Maiden & Betche were tes

Beyond the Rome IV criteria: Diagnostic accuracy of clinical tools for functional constipation in children and adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Functional constipation (FC) is the most prevalent digestive complaint in children and adolescents, significantly impacting quality of life and often associated with fecal incontinence, emotional disturbances, and urinary symptoms. Although its diagnosis is primarily clinical and based on the Rome IV criteria, the lack of objective severity parameters and reliance on self-reported symptoms can hinder early identification. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of commonly used auxiliary tools - the pediatric-adapted Cleveland Clinic Constipat

Rome IV Functional Defecation Disorder: Time for a Change in Symptom Criteria for Improved Clinical Relevance?

INTRODUCTION: Defecatory disorders are common affecting up to 8% of the population. Rome IV diagnostic criteria are used to define this condition and, therefore, select patients for the gold standard therapy, anorectal biofeedback. The aim of this study was to test the current Rome IV Functional Defecation Disorder (FDD) criteria in a real-world population by using the response to biofeedback as a validation tool. METHODS: A total of 485 patients (female 437, mean age 50 ± 17.6 years) with defecatory symptoms presenting to a neurogastroenterology clinic underwent anorectal biofeedback therapy
