Management of apical inflammatory root resorption: report of a case.

This article describes the diagnosis and treatment of a case of extensive apical external root resorption in the presence of a large periradicular lesion. The diagnosis was made in retrospect because the result of the resorption mimicked an immature root. The treatment consisted of the use of calcium hydroxide to induce apexification. Healing was obtained after 24 months.

Root resorption of a partially erupted tooth: a case report.

This article reports a case of a maxillary second premolar which on presentation was partially erupted, and which resisted attempts at orthodontic extrusion. The crown of the tooth was eventually restored using an adhesive composite onlay technique. The patient subsequently complained of pain and the root of the tooth showed radiographic evidence of resorption. The root of the extracted tooth had a vital pulp but massive external resorption was evident, with repair with bone-like material.

[A radiographic survey of root resorption in pulpless primary teeth].

The goal of this article is to survey the relation between root resorption types and sex, age, pulpless source, tooth position of pulpless primary central incisors. Healthy children with pulpless primary maxillary central incisors were systematically selected from the Kaohsiung Medical College Hospital Pedodontic Department. After a complete recording of age (3-6y/o), Sex (male, female), pulpless source (caries, trauma), and tooth position (#51, #61), the bisecting angle technique was used to take periapical X-ray film of pulpless primary maxillary central incisors. A total of 112 pulpless pri

[Fine structure of the root resorption of human deciduous tooth].

During growth and development of the gnathic bone in infants, it is not possible to observe the processes of resorption of the bone and deciduous tooth root, bone formation and calcification of the permanent teeth separately. In the gnathic bone of infants where a normal balance exists between formation of new tissue and resorption, the formative bone tissue is closely related to the cells which give rise to the deciduous and the permanent teeth. We used a scanning electron microscope to observe the fine structure of the root resorption of the deciduous teeth, using root deciduous teeth extrac

Root surface microcracks induced by orthodontic force as a potential primary indicator of root resorption.

Root resorption is closely related to orthodontic force and affects orthodontic treatment with high incidence; however, the mechanism governing this effect is unclear. Microcracks are associated with bone resorption and may also play an important role in root resorption. This study aimed to assess the occurrence of microcracks on the root surface induced by orthodontic force, analyze the association between force and microcrack development, and propose potential measures to reduce microcracks. Different loads (0.5, 1, or 2 N) were applied between the left first molar and anterior teeth for dif

Management of root canal stenosis and external inflammatory resorption by surgical root reconstruction using biodentine.

Root canal stenosis and external inflammatory root resorption are potential consequence of trauma that can occur depending on the severity of the injury. Luxation injuries induce reduced blood supply to the pulp, which leads to calcification/narrowing of root canals leading to root canal stenosis. External inflammatory cervical resorption occurs when there has been the loss of cementum due to damage to the external surface of tooth root during trauma, plus root canal system becoming infected with bacteria. External inflammatory resorption can ultimately lead to loss of tooth if it is not manag

Comparison of orthodontic root resorption of root-filled and vital teeth using micro-computed tomography.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the difference in orthodontic root resorption between root-filled and vital teeth. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixteen individuals who required bilateral premolar tooth extraction due to orthodontic treatment and had a previously root-filled premolar tooth on one side were included in the study. The experimental group consisted of root-filled premolar teeth, and the control group consisted of contralateral vital premolar teeth. A 150-g buccally directed force was applied to these teeth using 0.017 × 0.025-inch TMA cantilever springs. The premolars were extracted 8 weeks after

Apical root displacement is a critical risk factor for apical root resorption after orthodontic treatment.

OBJECTIVES:: To identify risk factors for apical root resorption (ARR) of maxillary and mandibular incisors using mathematical quantification of apical root displacement (ARD) and multiple linear mixed-effects modeling. MATERIALS AND METHODS:: Periapical radiographs of maxillary and mandibular incisors and lateral cephalograms of 135 adults were taken before and after orthodontic treatment. ARR was measured on the periapical radiographs, and movement of central incisors was evaluated on the superimposed pre- and posttreatment lateral cephalograms. ARD was mathematically calculated from pretre

Extraoral Retrograde Root Canal Filling of an Orthodontic-induced External Root Resorption Using CEM Cement.

Inflammatory external root resorption (IERR) after orthodontic treatments is an unusual complication. This case report describes a non-vital maxillary premolar with symptomatic extensive IERR (with a crown/root ratio of 1:1) after receiving orthodontic treatment. The first appointment included drainage, chemo-mechanical preparation of the canal and intra-canal medication with calcium hydroxide (CH) along with prescription of analgesic/antibiotic. The subsequent one-week follow-up revealed the persistence of symptoms and formation of a sinus tract. Finally, extraoral endodontic treatment was pl

The role of infection in signalling root resorption: A narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Root resorption consists of complex, multistep processes that involve cell signalling caused by inflammation and stromal cells, which promotes the secretion of receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand/ macrophage-colony stimulating factor (RANKL/M-CSF) resulting in a resorptive process. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this narrative review was to analyse the literature related to root resorption resulting from microbial infection and to comparing it with non-microbial infection. METHODS: An electronic literature search was performed using the PubMed database and applying keywords of

Root resorptions induced by genetic disorders: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Root resorption in permanent teeth is a common pathological process that often follows dental trauma or orthodontic treatment. More rarely, root resorption is a feature of genetic disorders and can help with diagnosis. Thus, the present review aims to determine which genetic disorders could induce pathological root resorptions and thus which mutated genes could be associated with them. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines. Articles describing root resorptions in patients with genetic disorders were included from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science,

Open bite as a risk factor for orthodontic root resorption.

The purpose of the present study was to clarify the prevalence and degree of root resorption induced by orthodontic treatment in patients with and without open bite. One hundred and eleven patients treated with multibracket appliances were retrospectively selected from the patients and divided into non-open bite (NOB) and open bite (OB) groups. The severity of root resorption and the root shape were classified into five groups on periapical radiographs before and after treatment. Moreover, only in the OB group, all teeth were sub-divided into functional and hypofunctional ones that are occludi

Root resorption in the furcation area: a differential diagnostic consideration.

BACKGROUND: This report describes the case of a 51-year-old female who was referred to a periodontist with a tentative diagnosis of complicated furcation defect in the facial aspect of the second permanent molar in the mandibular right quadrant. METHODS: The clinical examination revealed an asymptomatic tooth without evidence of abnormal attrition, caries, or periodontitis. A closer assessment revealed a large concave lesion located close to the furcation entrance without being obviously connected to it. Periapical radiographs confirmed the presence of a lesion in the hard tissues of the root

Retreatment of a patient with Marfan syndrome and severe root resorption.

This case report describes the retreatment of a patient with Marfan syndrome whose earlier orthodontic and surgical treatment had been unsuccessful. Marfan syndrome is an inherited connective tissue disorder transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait. The disorder results from molecular defects in the fibrillin gene that are responsible for the impaired structural integrity of the skeletal, ocular, and cardiovascular systems. When she sought retreatment, the patient had an open bite, mandibular anterior crowding, severe root resorption, and temporomandibular joint derangement with some resorpt
