Sunflower Cake from the Biodiesel Industry in the Diet Improves the Performance and Carcass Traits of Nellore Young Bulls.

We aimed to determine the optimal inclusion level of sunflower cake (0, 90, 180, and 270 g/kg total DM) as a partial replacement of soybean meal and corn ground in young bulls' diets by examining nutrient intake and digestibility, ingestive behavior, nitrogen balance, metabolic serum profile, growth performance, and carcass traits. Thirty-two intact Nellore bulls (BW 374 ± 42.5) were distributed in a completely randomized design. The experiment lasted 90 days. The final BW of the animals was 515.25 ± 24.7. There was a linear decrease effect in the intake of DM, crude protein and nonfibrous car

[Control of ingestive behavior and rumination by neuropeptides].

In sheep as in other species, intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration of picomolar doses of several peptide hormones affects food intake and rumination, suggesting that these hormones play a role in the physiological control of feeding behavior. Their effects depend on their duration (short vs long-term) and/or their nature (orexigenic vs anorexigenic). Among the short-term satiety factors, CCK8, CRF and calcitonin, administered ICV, decrease food intake by reducing the rate (CCK8) or the duration (CRF, calcitonin) of ingestion; in contrast, the gastrin group of peptides (gastrin 17, pent

Effects of diets balanced for undigestible neutral detergent fiber varying in forage inclusion rate and particle length on rumen environment, digestibility, production, and efficiency in dairy cows.

Several parameters are used to evaluate the physical characteristics and effectiveness of forage in ruminant nutrition, including NDF content, fiber length, and digestibility. In our recent study, we examined the use of undigestible NDF (uNDF) as a factor for diet formulation to better evaluate the forage quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the interaction between forage inclusion rate and forage particle length (FPL) in diets formulated to contain similar concentrations of forage 48-h undigestible neutral detergent fiber (forage-uNDF48), and to determine their effects on DMI,

Relationships between physically effective undegraded neutral detergent fiber and rumen-fermentable starch in diets for lactating Holstein dairy cows.

We assessed the effect of rumen-fermentable starch (RFS; 7-h in vitro starch digestibility) in diets that contained low or moderate physically effective undegraded NDF after 240-h of in vitro fermentation (peuNDF240) on DMI, milk yield and composition, chewing behavior, ruminal function, and apparent total-tract nutrient digestibility. Sixteen lactating Holstein cows (8 ruminally cannulated) averaging 85 ± 15 (SD) DIM were enrolled in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design (28-d periods) with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Diets differed in peuNDF240 and RFS content by inclusion

Comparative study of feeding and rumination behaviour of goats and sheep fed mixed grass hay of different chop length.

Rumination is reported to be more pronounced in sheep compared to goats. This study compared the feeding and rumination behaviour of small ruminants and consisted of two experiments (E1 and E2). In E1, four sheep and four goats were offered low-quality hay (NDFom: 692 g/kg dry matter [DM]), processed to two chop lengths (long hay [LH]: 35 mm; short hay [SH]: 7 mm) in a 2 × 2 factorial (2 species × 2 chop lengths), cross-over design. In E2, the same animals were offered moderate-quality hay (NDFom: 636 g/kg DM) processed as LH and SH. Hay was offered for ad libitum consumption. Feeding and rumi

A pilot study on dietary and faecal calcium/phosphorus ratios in different types of captive ruminating herbivores.

Quantitative differences in calcium and phosphorus metabolism between domestic species exist and can be visualised using data on calcium and phosphorus intake and faecal excretion. The parameter for analysing the results was defined as Δ = dietary calcium/phosphorus (Ca/P) ratio - faecal Ca/P ratio. In previous studies, hindgut fermenters had significantly higher Δ values than ruminants (sheep, cattle, goats), which was explained by the high calcium digestibilities in hindgut fermenters in contrast to highly efficient phosphorus recycling in ruminants. The first hypothesis of the present study

Influence of level of dried distillers grains plus solubles substitution for steam-flaked corn on characteristics of growth performance, and dietary energetics of calf-fed Holstein steers during the initial 16-week growing phase: metabolizable protein versus metabolizable amino acids.

This study evaluates the partial replacement of steam-flaked corn (SFC) with increasing dried distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS) levels in growing-finishing diets for calf-fed Holstein steers. Two experiments were conducted. In trial 1, 100 Holstein calves (136 ± 7 kg) were used to evaluate the effect of DDGS as a metabolizable protein source on cattle growth performance, and dietary energetics of calf-fed Holstein steers during the initial 111 d growing phase. Four dietary levels of DDGS were evaluated (10, 15, 20, and 25%, dry matter basis), replacing SFC (flake density, 0.31 kg/L). In t

A comprehensive ruminant microbial catalog (CRMC) reveals convergent selection for key vitamin-synthesizing pathways and genes across ruminants and human.

BACKGROUND: The ruminant gastrointestinal tract (GIT) serves as a natural microbial reservoir in which vitamin-synthesizing microbes play key integrated roles in digestion, nutrient absorption, and metabolic balance; however, studies systematically elucidating their functional characteristics and ecological roles remain limited due to the lack of a large-scale reference genome catalog for ruminant gastrointestinal vitamin-synthesizing microbes. Here, based on 2,325 metagenomic samples from 8 ruminant hosts, we comprehensively reconstructed and analyzed the ruminant GIT microbiome and the distr

Chitosan-coated zein microcapsules for rumen-protected docosahexaenoic acid delivery and enrichment in goat milk.

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is a long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid with significant nutritional value. Natural DHA-enriched milk is an excellent source, but DHA is lost in the rumen, limiting its enrichment in milk. Herein, a novel zein-chitosan (CS) composite microcapsule system was developed to bypass ruminal degradation and enable controlled post-ruminal DHA release. Zein-CS microcapsules and two zein-only formulations, namely freeze-dried zein microcapsules (Zein-FD) and spray-dried zein microcapsules (Zein-SD), were physically and chemically characterized. Addition of chitosan

Evidence for a tradeoff between retention time and chewing efficiency in large mammalian herbivores.

Large body size is thought to produce a digestive advantage through different scaling effects of gut capacity and food intake, with supposedly longer digesta retention times in larger animals. However, empirical tests of this framework have remained equivocal, which we hypothesize is because previous comparative studies have not included digesta particle size. Larger particles require more time for digestion, and if digesta particle size increases with body mass, it could explain the lack of digestive advantage in larger herbivores. We combine data on body mass, food intake, digesta retention

Effects of alfalfa particle size and specific gravity on chewing activity, digestibility, and performance of Holstein dairy cows.

Two experiments were carried out to test the effects of alfalfa particle size and functional specific gravity (FSG) on chewing activity, digestibility, rumen kinetics, and production of lactating dairy cows fed corn silage based rations. In experiment 1, water-holding capacity (WHC), insoluble dry matter, hydration rate, and FSG changes were determined in alfalfa hay (varying in particle size) and corn silage. Reduction of particle size increased bulk density, FSG, and the rate of hydration, and decreased WHC of alfalfa. In experiment 2, 9 midlactation Holstein dairy cows fed total mixed ratio

Genetic analysis of resilience in Israeli Holstein cattle based on first parity daily rumination and milk production records.

Resilience in farm animals was proposed as an indicator trait for health and robustness. One approach is to analyze the variance and autocorrelation of daily milk production. Daily rumination time is a useful indicator of health status. Recently developed rumination monitoring tags provide accurate daily output data on large numbers of cows. Genetic correlations were computed between the means, log variances, and autocorrelations of daily milk production and rumination time, 5 metabolic diseases (retained placenta, metritis, ketosis, displaced abomasum, and milk fever), 7 traits included in th

Modification of dietary rumen degradable starch content by chemical processing of feed ingredients: A meta-analysis.

The efficiency of starch utilization in ruminant feed can be enhanced by reducing the degradation of starch in the rumen. Chemical processing of feed ingredients may modify such ruminal starch degradation. This study aimed to evaluate the chemical processing of ruminant feed ingredients on rumen degradable starch (RDS) and starch degradation kinetics in the rumen. A database was constructed from a total of 34 articles, consisted of 100 observations. The articles were searched and identified from the Scopus platform. Data were analyzed by using the fixed effect model. The types of chemical proc

Evaluation of the RumiWatchSystem for measuring grazing behaviour of cows.

Feeding behaviour is an important parameter of animal performance, health and welfare, as well as reflecting levels and quality of feed available. Previously, sensors were only used for measuring animal feeding behaviour in indoor housing systems. However, sensors such as the RumiWatchSystem can also monitor such behaviour continuously in pasture-based environments. Therefore, the aim of this study was to validate the RumiWatchSystem to record cow activity and feeding behaviour in a pasture-based system. The RumiWatchSystem was evaluated against visual observation across two different experime

Effects of soybean meal supplementation on ruminal kinetics of feed particle size reduction and passage in dairy cows fed rice straw.

Six ruminal-cannulated nonlactating Holstein Friesian cows (mean body weight:660 ± 42.9 kg) were used to investigate the effect of soybean meal (SBM) supplementation on voluntary rice straw (RS) intake, feed particle size reduction, and passage kinetics in the rumen. They were allocated to two dietary treatments: RS alone or RS supplemented with SBM. Voluntary dry matter intake of RS and total tract fiber digestibility was increased by SBM supplementation (p < 0.05). Supplementation with SBM decreased rumination time per dietary dry matter (DM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDFom) intake (p < 0

Physical parameters of fiber affecting passage from the rumen.

Our objective was to review the factors that affect fiber passage from the rumen. Rumen residence time and passage from the rumen are important in control of intake, digestibility, protein metabolism, and protein escape. Physical factors associated with particle size and particle specific gravity affect passage from the rumen. Although particles of 5 cm may pass through the reticulo-omasal orifice, most particles leaving the rumen are smaller than 1 mm. Polypropylene ribbon cut into 7-cm lengths, introduced into the rumen, markedly reduced intake and were ruminated to fine particle size before
