Pinnipeds are a diverse clade of semi-aquatic mammals, which act as key indicators of ecosystem health. Their transition from land to marine environments provides a complex microbial milieu, making them vulnerable to both aquatic and terrestrial pathogens, thereby contributing to pinniped population decline. Indeed, viral pathogens such as influenza A virus and phocine distemper virus (PDV) have been identified as the cause of several of these mass mortality events. Furthermore, bacterial infection with mammalian Brucella sp. and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains have also be

A study was conducted to investigate the presence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in Antarctic marine mammals. A total of 270 faecal samples from different species of pinnipeds from different locations in the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula were analysed by immunofluorescence microscopy and PCR. Cryptosporidium was detected by PCR in three samples from Southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) and 2 Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii). However, no oocysts were observed in any of the samples by immunofluorescence microscopy. Molecular characterisation of the isolates, using t

Since cyclodextrin gas chromatography columns became popular for chiral separations, many researchers have noticed high enantiomeric ratios [ER: (+)-enantiomer/(-)-enantiomer] for alpha-HCH in the brains of wildlife. This investigation used the laboratory rat as a model for these phenomena. Rats were either pretreated with phenobarbital (PB) or left untreated and then dosed with alpha-HCH. Animals were sacrificed after 1 or 24 h. The ER averaged 0.95 +/- 0.01 in blood, 1.29 +/- 0.02 in fat, and 0.77 +/- 0.004 in liver. ERs in brain ranged from 2.8 +/- 0.5 to 13.5 +/- 0.4. Concentrations of methylmercury, total mercury and selenium in marine mammal tissues were determined in liver, muscle, skin (muktuk) and blubber of belugas, ringed seals and narwhal, using atomic absorption and capillary gas chromatography with ECD detection. Mean MeHg levels in the types of tissues analysed, except blubber, generally exceeded the Canadian Federal Consumption Guideline for mercury in fish (0.5 micrograms/g wet wt.). A spatial trend of higher MeHg levels in western compared to eastern Arctic belugas and ringed seals was found which followed a similar trend observed for total me

The intestinal disaccharidases, lactase, sucrase-isomaltase complex, and glucoamylase are proteins intimately associated with the brush-border membrane of the epithelial cell. These three enzyme activities are found in the intestine of the adult rat; lactase and glucoamylase activities are primarily associated with the intestine of the infant rat. Only glucoamylase and isomaltase activities are detected in the intestine of the California sea lion, Zalophus californianus. The activities of these enzymes are detected only in villus cells, and not in crypt cells. We have carried out electron micr

BACKGROUND: Alaska's marine mammals compose a large portion of the diet of indigenous coastal Alaskan people. Bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) and bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus), inhabitants of the Bering and Beaufort seas along Alaska's western and northern coasts, are 2 of the most important subsistence species, serving as major food sources to the native population.
OBJECTIVE: To describe an Inupiaq boy with symptoms consistent with an IgE-mediated food allergy after ingestion of bowhead whale and bearded seal meat.
METHODS: Extracts of cooked bowhead whale and bearded seal were p

The involvement of the intestinal mucosa and of the gut-associated lymphoid tissue in phocine distemper was studied in six severely diseased harbour seals 11 to 16 days after experimental infection. Five seals exhibited a mild or moderate enteritis in the small or large intestine. In all the seals, a moderate to severe depletion of submucosal lymphoid follicles was found. Likewise, antigen of phocine distemper virus (PDV) was demonstrated immunohistochemically in the intestinal wall of all the seals. Most antigen was found in the submucosal lymphoid follicles, followed by the crypt epithelium

The susceptibility of seals to infection with Trichinella nativa and the cold tolerant characteristics of muscle larvae in seal meat were evaluated. Two grey seals, Halichoerus grypus, were inoculated with 5000 (100 larvae/kg) T. nativa larvae and two grey seals with 50000 (1000 larvae/kg). One seal from each dose group and two control seals were killed at 5 and 10 weeks post-inoculation (p.i.). At 5 weeks p.i., infection was established in both low and high dose seals with mean larval densities of 68 and 472 larvae per gram (lpg), respectively, using eight different muscles for analyses. At 1

Brucella infection in seals was reported for the first time in 1994 around the coast of Scotland. Since then, marine mammal Brucella infections were found to be widely distributed in the northern hemisphere. Two Brucella species affect marine mammals: Brucella pinnipedialis in pinnipeds and Brucella ceti in cetaceans. We examined the livers of Baltic grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) from the Finnish coast (n=122) hunted, found dead, or killed as by-catch in fishing gear in 2013-15 as part of population health monitoring. We detected B. pinnipedialis in the livers of three grey seals. The bacter

Results obtained at postmortem examinations of 159 Baltic grey seals during the 20-year period 1977-1996 are presented. The investigation was initiated due to a serious reduction of the Baltic grey and ringed seal populations. Earlier, reduced reproductive ability with occlusions and stenoses of the uterus, as well as a disease complex in adult individuals of both sexes, was reported. The disease complex comprised lesions of claws, skull bone, intestine (colonic ulcers), kidneys (glomerulopathy, tubular cell proliferations), arteries (sclerosis) and adrenals (cortical hyperplasia, cortical ade

In the anesthetized spontaneously breathing harbor seal Phoca vitulina stimulation of the carotid body chemoreceptors by intracarotid injections of sodium cyanide or by hypoxic hypercapnic blood causes an increase in tidal volume, respiratory frequency, and respiratory minute volume. The heart rate invariably decreased. Experimental dives caused apnea and bradycardia. When the carotid bodies are stimulated within 10 s of the commencement of a dive, the chemoreceptor-respiratory response is abolished, but the chemoreceptor-cardioinhibitory response is considerably enhanced. Electrical stimulati

UV absorbents and industrial antioxidants are contaminants of emerging concern. However, their tissue distribution in marine mammals remains poorly characterized. This study investigated the tissue distribution of benzotriazole UV stabilizers (BZT-UVs), organic UV filters (UVFs), 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol (26DTBP), and aromatic secondary amines (Ar-SAs) in Atlantic walrus (Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus) (blubber, muscle, and liver) and ringed seal (Pusa hispida) (blubber and liver) tissues collected around several communities in the Canadian Arctic. In both species, blubber accumulated higher level

Various brominated flame retardants (BFRs), including polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and current-use, non-PBDE BFRs, as well as organochlorine (OC) pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), were measured in winter flounder, harp and hooded seals, and North Atlantic right whales from the Eastern United States and Canada. The concentrations of PBDEs in winter flounder and right whales were similar in magnitude to the levels of PCBs, which was unlike the pattern observed in seals. In these marine mammals, the levels of PBDEs were orders of magnitude lower than the levels of OCs and

Tracheal replacement has been a challenging problem for thoracic surgeons for over half of a century. We evaluated the in-vivo performance of a new tracheal bioprosthesis derived from Harp seal (Phoca groelandica) trachea that was fixed and preserved in 0.625% buffered glutaraldehyde solution for 3 months. Ten young male pigs weighing 27-32 kg (mean, 28.7 kg) underwent replacement of a tracheal segment with this new bioprosthesis. The length of replaced trachea was 1.8-2.4 cm (mean, 2.17 cm), representing 2-3 cartilage rings. All pigs survived the operation uneventfully. No immunosuppression d

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii, a zoonotic protozoan parasite, infects mammals and birds worldwide. Infection in humans is often asymptomatic, though illnesses can occur in immunocompromised hosts and the fetuses of susceptible women infected during pregnancy. In Nunavik, Canada, 60% of the Inuit population has measurable antibodies against T. gondii. Handling and consumption of wildlife have been identified as risk factors for exposure. Serological evidence of exposure has been reported for wildlife in Nunavik; however, T. gondii has not been detected in wildlife tissues commonly consumed by I

Arctic contaminant research in the marine environment has focused on organohalogen compounds and mercury mainly because they are bioaccumulative, persistent and toxic. This review summarizes and discusses the patterns and trends of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and mercury in ringed seals (Pusa hispida) and polar bears (Ursus maritimus) in the Eastern Canadian Arctic relative to the rest of the Canadian Arctic. The review provides explanations for these trends and looks at the implications of climate-related changes on contaminants in these marine mammals in a region that has been revie

Epizootological surveys on the Arctic coasts of the Russian Federation revealed 8 terrestrial andmarine mammal species that were Trichinella carriers. The infection rate varied with the animal species from 1.6 to 92.8%. Analysis of the taxonomic affiliation of Trichinella isolated from the muscles of the terrestrial and marine mammals indicated that the Trichinella species T. nativa was widespread in the arctic areas of the Russian Federation. Analysis of sequences in the Cob gene of mtDNA revealed nucleotide differences between several isolates of this species.

Incomplete recovery of peroneal palsy, after a sealbite during swimming has not been reported. A 58-year-old woman was bitten into the right knee by a seal during swimming, resulting in incomplete division of the right profound branch of the peroneal nerve and complete division of the superficial branch of the peroneal nerve. Initial drop-foot, absent foot eversion, and hypaesthesia of the lateral lower leg were followed by almost complete clinical recovery of motor functions within four month by spontaneous re-innervation from the proximal nerve stump, despite severely abnormal electrophysiol
