Journal of veterinary cardiology : the official journal of the European Society of Veterinary Cardiology2021eng
Cardiomyopathies such as dilated cardiomyopathy and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy are common in large breed dogs and carry an overall poor prognosis. Research shows that these diseases have strong breed predilections, and selective breeding has historically been recommended to reduce the disease prevalence in affected breeds. Treatment of these diseases is typically palliative and aimed at slowing disease progression and managing clinical signs of heart failure as they develop. The discovery of specific genetic mutations underlying cardiomyopathies, such as the striatin mutat

The aim of this study was to identify the influence of genetic carriership for cryptorchidism on litter sizes and sex ratios in the offspring. Weaning data of 11,230 litters in 12 purebred dog breeds were evaluated. Parents were classified as cryptorchidism 'carriers' (C) when at least one of their offspring was found cryptorchid. Subsequently the effects of 'carrier' and 'non-carrier' (NC) parents on their litters were studied. In litters from C x C parents we found an increased number of males per litter in all breeds, a reduced number of females per litter in 8 breeds and an increased litte

Historic breeding program end-use quality data was used to perform genomic selection in two broad frameworks, incorporating fixed effect loci and genotype by environment interactions. Exceptional end-use quality in hexaploid bread wheat is an important factor for selling wheat in the global marketplace. However, many end-use quality traits are time-consuming and expensive to test, meaning their measurement is often delayed until late-stage trials of a breeding program. Genomic selection (GS) is one tool that has been shown to allow for earlier generation improvement of many traits in wheat bre

Behavioral addictions can come in many forms, including overeating, gambling and overexercising. All addictions share a common mechanism involving activation of the natural reward circuit and reinforcement learning, but the extent to which motivation for natural and drug rewards share similar neurogenetic mechanisms remains unknown. A unique mouse genetic model in which four replicate lines of female mice were selectively bred (>76 generations) for high voluntary wheel running (High Runner or HR lines) alongside four non-selected control (C) lines were used to test the hypothesis that high mot

A 10-generation divergent selection experiment for uterine capacity (UC) measured as litter size in unilaterally ovariectomized females was carried out in rabbits. A total of 2,996 observations on uterine capacity of does (up to four parities) was recorded. Laparoscopy was performed at d 12 of their second gestation, and ovulation rate (OR) and number of implanted embryos (IE) were recorded in 735 does. Prenatal survival (PS) was assessed as UC/OR, embryo survival (ES) as IE/OR, and fetal survival (FS) as UC/IE. Genetic parameters and genetic trends were inferred using Bayesian methods. Margin

Dairy farmers do not take full advantage of opportunities available for genetic improvement through use of artificial insemination, perhaps because economic advantages of good sire selection may not be fully recognized or understood. This study was undertaken to document differences between use of AI and non-AI bulls and to develop prediction equations to compare lifetime economic merit of future progeny from alternative sire selection policies. We describe the use of two methods of measuring lifetime economic merit, with and without adjustment for opportunity cost of a postponed replacement.

High ambient temperature (AT) significantly depresses growth rate and meat yield of commercial broilers, thus making it a major factor hindering poultry meat production, especially in hot climates. The effects of high AT were variably moderated when feather coverage was reduced by the naked-neck gene (Na). In this study, the effects of high AT and Na were investigated in broiler progeny of hens from a sire line and two dam lines, differing in growth rate and meat yield due to different breeding histories. Heterozygous naked-neck (Na/na) males were mated with normally feathered (na/na) hens fro

The objective of this study was to compare a conventional dairy cattle breeding program characterized by a progeny testing scheme with different scenarios of genomic breeding programs. The ultimate economic evaluation criterion was discounted profit reflecting discounted returns minus discounted costs per cow in a balanced breeding goal of production and functionality. A deterministic approach mainly based on the gene flow method and selection index calculations was used to model a conventional progeny testing program and different scenarios of genomic breeding programs. As a novel idea, the m

BACKGROUND: Allochrony can be a cause or consequence of speciation, either creating temporal reproductive isolation that reduces gene flow between diverging populations or reinforcing divergence that has already occurred through geographic isolation. The former appears to apply to band-rumped storm-petrels (Hydrobates castro) at some breeding sites, where there are genetically differentiated hot and cool season breeding populations. It is unclear, however, whether seasonally segregated but genetically similar populations retain the same habitat preferences or whether divergence in foraging beh

Genetic improvement of dairy cows, which has increased the milk yield of cows in the UK by 1200 kg per lactation in 12 years, is an excellent example of the application of quantitative genetics to agriculture. The most important traits of dairy cattle are expressed only in females, but the main opportunity for selection is in males. Despite this, genetic improvement was achieved by the invention of a new statistical methodology, called 'best linear unbiased prediction' to estimate the breeding value of bulls. Intense selection of the best bulls, combined with the worldwide use of these bulls t

"Boldness" in dogs is believed to be one end of the shy-bold axis, representing a super-trait. Several personality traits fall under the influence of this super-trait. Previous studies on boldness in dogs have found differences among breeds, but grouping breeds on the basis of behavioural similarities has been elusive. This study investigated differences in the expression of boldness among dog breeds, kennel club breed groups, and sub-groups of kennel club breed groups by way of a survey on dog personality circulated among Australian dog-training clubs and internet forums and lists. Breed had

The small intestine is the main site for digestion and absorption of nutrients, and the development of the small intestine can be affected by several factors, such as diet composition, age, and genotype. Thus, this study aimed to compare the small intestinal morphology and digestive function differences at different ages of three pig breeds. Thirty litters of newborn Taoyuan black (TB), Xiangcun black (XB), and Duroc (DR) piglets (ten litters per breed) were selected for this study. Ten piglets from each breed were selected and sampled at 1, 10, 21, and 24 days old. The results showed that the

Finding effective predictors of traits related to boar fertility is essential for increasing the efficiency of artificial insemination systems in pig breeding. The objective of this study was to find associations between single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within candidate genes and fertility in the breeds Landrace and Duroc. Animals with breeding values for total number of piglets born, were re-sequenced for exonic regions of 14 candidate genes related to male and female fertility using samples from 16 Landrace boars and 16 Duroc boars (four with high and four with low breeding value of to

Genetic rescue, outcrossing with individuals from a related population, is used to augment genetic diversity in populations threatened by severe inbreeding and extinction. The endangered Norwegian Lundehund dog underwent at least two severe bottlenecks in the 1940s and 1960s that each left only five inbred dogs, and the approximately 1500 dogs remaining world-wide today appear to descend from only two individuals. The Lundehund has a high prevalence of a gastrointestinal disease, to which all remaining dogs may be predisposed. Outcrossing is currently performed with three Nordic Spitz breeds:

Copper-associated hepatitis is a common cause of primary liver disease in dogs, generally caused by a combination of genetic susceptibility and environmental factors, such as dietary copper intake. Several mutations involving the genes ATPase copper transporting alpha, ATPase copper transporting beta, and copper metabolism domain containing 1 partly explain heritability in certain breeds. Predisposed breeds include Bedlington terriers, Dobermanns, Labrador retrievers, Cavalier King Charles spaniels, West Highland White terriers, and Dalmatians. Early diagnosis through liver biopsy and copper q

Water temperature fluctuations directly affect the feeding, reproduction, and survival of aquatic animals. Understanding the molecular networks that regulate temperature responses is therefore critical for selective breeding of thermotolerant strains. In this study, we first assessed the thermotolerant performances of two Procambarus clarkii populations (selected and normal cultured populations) with contrasting thermal endurance capacities. Temperature stress challenges showed that the selected population exhibited great endurance capacities to both heat and cold stresses. Further comparative

This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the history of commercial poultry breeding, from domestication to the development of science and commercial breeding structures. The development of breeding goals over time, from mainly focusing on production to broad goals, including bird welfare and health, robustness, environmental impact, biological efficiency and reproduction, is detailed. The paper outlines current breeding goals, including traits (e.g., on foot and leg health, contact dermatitis, gait, cardiovascular health, robustness and livability), recording techniques, their genetic b

Knowledge of genetic interrelationships and grouping among pigeonpea germplasm collections is fundamental to selecting breeding parents with unique genetic constitutions. The objectives of this study were to assess the genetic diversity and genetic grouping present among 81 pigeonpea genotypes collected from Malawi, Tanzania and Kenya using 4122 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers and complementary morphological traits. The SNP markers and phenotypic traits revealed significant genetic variation among the assessed genotypes. The test genotypes were resolved into three distinct cluster

Egg recognition and rejection constitute essential host defenses against brood parasitism, with rejection decisions reflecting evolutionary adaptations shaped by cost-benefit trade-offs. Although long-term studies have established correlations between egg rejection behavior and parasitism risk, it remains unclear whether hosts can dynamically adjust their defenses in response to stage-specific parasitic threats across different breeding periods. We investigated temporal variation in egg recognition and rejection latency in the green-backed tit (Parus monticolus), analyzing both seasonal patter
