Brain Activity Unique to Orgasm in Women: An fMRI Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although the literature on imaging of regional brain activity during sexual arousal in women and men is extensive and largely consistent, that on orgasm is relatively limited and variable, owing in part to the methodologic challenges posed by variability in latency to orgasm in participants and head movement. AIM: To compare brain activity at orgasm (self- and partner-induced) with that at the onset of genital stimulation, immediately before the onset of orgasm, and immediately after the cessation of orgasm and to upgrade the methodology for obtaining and analyzing functional magn

A novel functional electrical stimulation-control system for restoring motor function of post-stroke hemiplegic patients.

Hemiparesis is one of the most common consequences of stroke. Advanced rehabilitation techniques are essential for restoring motor function in hemiplegic patients. Functional electrical stimulation applied to the affected limb based on myoelectric signal from the unaffected limb is a promising therapy for hemiplegia. In this study, we developed a prototype system for evaluating this novel functional electrical stimulation-control strategy. Based on surface electromyography and a vector machine model, a self-administered, multi-movement, force-modulation functional electrical stimulation-protot

Optic flow detection is not influenced by visual-vestibular congruency.

Optic flow patterns generated by self-motion relative to the stationary environment result in congruent visual-vestibular self-motion signals. Incongruent signals can arise due to object motion, vestibular dysfunction, or artificial stimulation, which are less common. Hence, we are predominantly exposed to congruent rather than incongruent visual-vestibular stimulation. If the brain takes advantage of this probabilistic association, we expect observers to be more sensitive to visual optic flow that is congruent with ongoing vestibular stimulation. We tested this expectation by measuring the mo

Lateral hypothalamic stimulation can augment or attenuate nucleus gigantocellularis escape: evidence for appetite-associated aversion amelioration.

Carr and Coons (1982a, 1982b) found that lateral hypothalamic (LH) stimulation ameliorates the aversiveness of stimulation of pain-implicated nucleus gigantocellularis (NGC), but this finding disagrees with other findings. To resolve this disagreement, we tested whether amelioration is differentially associated with the ability of LH stimulation to support self-stimulation (SS), to support responding to escape LH stimulation (LH escape), or to elicit stimulation-bound feeding (SBF). LH stimulation not yielding SBF always increased responding to escape from NGC stimulation (NGC escape) and was

Effects of pentobarbital and d-amphetamine on oral phencyclidine self-administration in rhesus monkeys.

Three rhesus monkeys self-administered phencyclidine (0.25 mg/ml) during daily 3-hr sessions. Water was also available under a concurrent fixed-ratio (FR) 16 schedule. In Experiment 1, saline or three doses of pentobarbital (2.5, 5 or 10 mg/kg) were injected 10 min before phencyclidine (and water) self-administration sessions. The 2.5 mg/kg pentobarbital dose increased phencyclidine-maintained responding, the 5 mg/kg dose produced mixed effects among the three monkeys, and the 10 mg/kg dose consistently decreased phencyclidine-maintained responding. Subsequently, a saccharin solution (0.03% wt

Reversible and persistent decreases in cocaine self-administration after cholinesterase inhibition: different effects of donepezil and rivastigmine.

We recently observed that pretreatment with the cholinesterase inhibitor, tacrine can produce long-lasting reductions in cocaine-reinforced behavior, described as persistent attenuation. In addition to inhibiting both acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase, tacrine can potentiate actions of dopamine. This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of donepezil (which selectively inhibits AChE) and rivastigmine (which inhibits both AChE and butyrylcholinesterase) on cocaine self-administration. High self-administration rats self-administered different doses of cocaine under a

The Future of Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation in Sleep Medicine.

Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) methods carry particular appeal as non-pharmacological approaches to inducing or improving sleep. However, intense research efforts to use transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and electrical stimulation (tES) for sleep modulation have not yet delivered evidence-based NIBS treatments in sleep medicine. The main obstacles lie in insufficiently robust stimulation protocols that affect neurophysiological and self-reported sleep parameters, inadequately controlled-and explained-placebo effects, and heterogeneity in patient populations and outcome parameters.

The medial prefrontal cortex: a potential link between self-deception and affect.

The Medial Prefrontal Cortex (MPFC) is crucial for normal social functioning in humans. Because of its involvement in social monitoring, self-awareness, and self-enhancement, the MPFC may be critical to buffering negative affect and establishing a positive self-esteem. For example, we have previously found that disruption of the MPFC leads to more honest responses, which implies that the MPFC may be critically involved in self-deception. We therefore hypothesized that disrupting the MPFC would lead to a decrease in affect. Employing a virtual lesion TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) tech

Homeostasis of Naive and Memory T Lymphocytes.

Conventional CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes comprise a mixture of naive and memory cells. Generation and survival of these T-cell subsets is under strict homeostatic control and reflects contact with self-major histocompatibility complex (MHC) and certain cytokines. Naive T cells arise in the thymus via T-cell receptor (TCR)-dependent positive selection to self-peptide/MHC complexes and are then maintained in the periphery through self-MHC interaction plus stimulation via interleukin-7 (IL-7). By contrast, memory T cells are largely MHC-independent for their survival but depend strongly on stimul

The effects of anodal tDCS over the supplementary motor area on gait initiation in Parkinson's disease with freezing of gait: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated if anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (A-tDCS), applied over the supplementary motor areas (SMAs), could improve gait initiation in Parkinson's disease (PD) with freezing of gait (FOG). METHODS: In this double-blinded cross-over pilot study, ten PD with FOG underwent two stimulation sessions: A-tDCS (1 mA, 10 min) and sham stimulation. Eight blocks of gait initiation were collected per session: (1) pre-tDCS, with acoustic cueing; (2) pre-tDCS, self-initiated (no cue); and (3-8) post-tDCS, self-initiated. Gait initiation kinetics were analyzed with two-wa

Transcranial direct current stimulation to modulate fMRI drug cue reactivity in methamphetamine users: A randomized clinical trial.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been studied as a therapeutic option to alter maladaptive brain functions associated with chronic substance use. We present a randomized, triple-blind, sham-controlled, clinical trial to determine the neural substrates of tDCS effects on drug craving. Sixty participants with methamphetamine use disorder were assigned to two groups: active tDCS (5 x 7 cm2 , 2 mA, 20 min, anode/cathode over the F4/Fp1) and sham stimulation. Neuroimaging data of a methamphetamine cue reactivity task were collected immediately before and after stimulation. There w

The effect of tDCS over the right temporo-parietal junction on pain empathy.

Empathy is a complex psychological phenomenon crucial for social perception and interactions. Several lines of evidence suggest that the right temporo-parietal junction is involved in self-other control mechanisms that play an important role in empathic responses. However, limited direct evidence of the involvement of this region in empathic responses is currently available. In this study, inhibitory transcranial direct current stimulation over this region influenced empathic responses to others' pain. It was found that compared to participants that received anodal or sham transcranial direct

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation reduces cue-induced food craving in bulimic disorders.

BACKGROUND: Craving or the "urge to consume" is a characteristic of bulimic eating disorders and addictions. Dysfunction of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) is associated with craving. We investigated whether stimulation of the DLPFC reduces food craving in people with a bulimic-type eating disorder. METHODS: Thirty-eight people with bulimic-type eating disorders were randomly allocated to receive one session of real or sham high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to the left DLPFC in a double-blind procedure. Outcome measures included self-reported food c

Ventral tegmental analgesia in two strains of rats: effects of amphetamine, naloxone and parachlorophenylalanine.

Pain sensitivity and analgesia induced by the stimulation of the ventral tegmentum (VT) were studied in 72 male rats of two lines, LC2-Hi and LC2-Lo, genetically selected for high and low rates of lateral hypothalamic self-stimulation, respectively. LC2-Lo rats were more sensitive to acute peripheral pain and developed a stronger analgesia than their LC2-Hi counterparts. In order to assess the pharmacological substrate of ventral tegmental stimulation-induced analgesia (VT-SIA), the effects of amphetamine (AMP, 21 animals), naloxone (NX, 24 animals) and parachlorophenylalanine (PCPA, 27 animal

Anodal high-definition tDCS over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex is associated with autonomic regulation and executive performance.

High-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique increasingly investigated for its association with executive function performance. Emerging evidence indicates that prefrontal stimulation may also be associated with changes in autonomic regulation, as indexed by heart rate variability (HRV)-a physiological marker linked to adaptive cognitive control and emotional regulation. Within the Neurovisceral Integration Model, prefrontal cortical activity supports dynamic interactions between cognitive and autonomic systems, providing a theor

Recommendations for Abnormal Behaviour Ethograms in Monkey Research.

Laboratory monkey ethograms currently include subcategories of abnormal behaviours that are based on superficial morphological similarity. Yet, such ethograms may be misclassifying behaviour, with potential welfare implications as different abnormal behaviours are likely to have distinct risk factors and treatments. We therefore investigated the convergent validity of four hypothesized subcategories of abnormal behaviours ('motor', e.g., pacing; 'self-stimulation', e.g., self-sucking; 'postural', e.g., hanging; and 'self-abuse', e.g., self-biting). This hypothesis predicts positive relationshi
