Severe anaemia in pregnancy is an important preventable cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Different methods of screening for severe anaemia in pregnancy were evaluated in a 2-phased study conducted in Kilifi, Kenya. In phase 1 (in 1994/95), pallor testing was evaluated alone and in addition to raised respiratory/pulse rates: 1787 pregnant women were examined by one of 2 midwives. Sensitivities for detecting severe anaemia (haemoglobin < 7 g/dL) were 62% and 69% and specificities 87% and 77%, respectively for each of the midwives. Addition of high pulse rate increased sen

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the study was to analyze the effectiveness of a one-hour educational intervention to increase knowledge about and improve attitudes towards breast self-examination (BSE) and early cancer detection among adolescent girls.
METHODS: The sample used in this quasi-experimental study was selected from schools participating in an education program provided by a regional health education center. The instrument and scales used in the study were developed and pilot-tested for reliability and validity in the area schools prior to the start of the study. The sample consisted of

BACKGROUND: The five-year survival rate for African American women with breast cancer is notably lower than the rate for white women; thus, appropriate cancer education and screening efforts are needed to increase mammography and breast self-examination practices by African American women.
METHODS: The Witness Project is a theory-based intervention designed to provide culturally sensitive messages, from African American breast cancer survivors, in churches and community organizations. These messages emphasize the importance of early detection to improve survival.

Minorities and indigent populations have low participation rates in breast cancer education and screening programs, and suffer from higher morbidity and mortality. Attitudes, norms, and values of such populations are best addressed by breast cancer patients of the same race and cultural background who serve as role models. This article describes the development and pilot study of an intervention program using role models as part of a "Witness" presentation. Programs were held in participants' local African-American churches and community centers. The organization of the program was based on an

A population based programme to educate women in breast self-examination (BSE) was organised as part of the UK Trial of Early Detection of Breast Cancer. Women who responded to an invitation to a meeting were educated in groups and were not routinely screened. Open access clinics offered x ray and clinical examination to all women in the study age group of 45 to 64. Women who presented for screening without prior BSE education were taught individually by clinic staff. Women taught by the two methods were surveyed by post and their BSE practice since education was compared. It was hypothesised

A health education campaign was carried out at the start of a large trial of screening for breast cancer in Edinburgh. After preliminary studies the campaign concentrated on talks to small groups of women by specially trained health visitors. Over a year, 12,000 women attended. Systematic evaluation after 12 months showed that selected women who heard the talks were more knowledgeable about breast cancer, and a random sample of women in Edinburgh had a small but significant improvement in knowledge compared with women in Aberdeen. However, the random sample did not report an increase in the pr

This two-part study examined the effect of college women's participation in a breast self-examination (BSE) educational program on discussion of BSE with specific members of their social network. In addition, the characteristics of college women who did report discussion with others were investigated as was the relationship between this discussion and the participants' mothers' breast cancer screening behaviors. Results suggest that a BSE education intervention which includes explicit messages to encourage discussion with social network members is effective in increasing communication with mot

Women' knowledge of breast cancer and their beliefs about susceptibility to breast cancer and benefits of breast self-examination were explored in relation to frequency of practice of breast self-examination. Previous findings indicated that knowledge and beliefs may affect the practice of preventive health behaviors. A self-report questionnaire was administered to 263 women contacted through sorority alumnae groups and Y.M.C.A. groups. Subjects were grouped according to levels of physical exercise (high, moderate, or none) and compared on knowledge and beliefs about breast cancer and breast s

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) often leads to post-traumatic syndrome, including symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, and tinnitus, significantly compromising patients' quality of life. Self-compassion and self-worth, as key self-perception factors, have been widely demonstrated in previous research to buffer against negative self-evaluations, enhance self-worth, and improve quality of life. However, the internal heterogeneity of self-compassion and self-worth within the TBI patient population has not been sufficiently explored. This study aimed to identify potential subtypes based

BACKGROUND: There is mounting evidence that social norms affect attitudes, decision-making, and behaviors related to contraceptive use. Integral to the self-care movement for women to have more control over their reproductive health, subcutaneous depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA-SC) is a contraceptive that can be safely administered by women themselves after training. DMPA-SC was introduced in Uganda in 2017 and is slowly gaining traction, especially among women who value a convenient and private method. However, only a small percentage of DMPA-SC users choose to self-inject, perhaps mi

AIM: Breast cancer is the most prevalent type of cancer among women. One form of care related to early detection of breast cancer is breast self-examination (BSE). However, evidence on knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of BSE and its determining factors are minuscule in an Indian context. Therefore, the present study primarily examined the prevalence of KAP of BSE. Further, its association with general self-care and cultural factors was determined.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study obtained data from 412 women (Mn age = 26.63) from two rural localities of Vellore district, Tamil Nadu,

A mass screening program for breast cancer in Japan consists of physical examination (PE) and education on regular breast self-examination (BSE). The effect of PE with BSE on clinical stages and courses of breast cancer patients were retrospectively analyzed. Clinical stages and courses were compared between; i) patients who were examined in outpatient clinics (OPC, n=587), ii) patients who were detected by mass screening with regular BSE [BSE(+), n=68], and iii) without BSE [BSE(-), n=178]. Clinical stage in BSE(+) was significantly earlier than that in BSE(-) or OPC. As early stage cancer wa

INTRODUCTION: In Western culture, the female body is commonly socially perceived as an object of evaluation, causing women to frequently evaluate their self-worth based on their physical appearance. Since the last decade, the use of virtual reality (VR) helped clarify the intricate interplay between broader self-related dimensions and dysfunctional eating attitudes and behaviors in women with eating disorders (EDs). The first objective of this study explores the role of body image attitudes (i.e., perceived physical attractiveness, body shape concerns), global self-worth, and physical self-wor

The COVID-19 pandemic intensified stress for many couples and families, leading to increased depression symptoms and challenges with coping. This longitudinal study examined on actor- and partner-level dyadic associations between depressive symptoms and trauma coping self-efficacy (TCSE) among 535 heterosexual cisgender couples. Data were collected online across April (N = 535), July (N = 363), and November 2020 (N = 238). Results indicated significant temporal stability and longitudinal associations for both depression and TCSE within partners across time. Higher depression symptoms in one pa

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BC) is a prevalent malignancy in women, and breast self-examination (BSE) is an important tool for early diagnosis. Despite its significance, BSE is insufficiently practiced, particularly in developing countries. This research evaluated the knowledge, beliefs, and practices concerning breast cancer and breast self-examination among female college teachers in Pakistan.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in August 2024, using the health belief model (HBM) as a theoretical framework, involving 176 female college teachers in Hyderabad, Pakistan
