Mediators of childhood trauma and suicidality in a cohort of socio-economically deprived Scottish men.

BACKGROUND: There is little research investigating the relationship between childhood abuse, including neglect, and suicidality in adult men, despite epidemiological data suggesting that they are most at risk for suicide. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between childhood abuse and neglect and suicidality, and the possible mediating roles of affect dysregulation and social inhibition. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: a cohort of eighty-six socio-economically deprived male Caucasian participants previously identified as suicidal, attending a non-clinical community group. METHODS: Particip

The Relationship Between Childhood Maltreatment and Insomnia in Depressed Adolescents: The Mediating Role of Rumination.

BACKGROUND: There exists a prevalence of insomnia in depressed adolescents. Childhood maltreatment is a major life event which may intensify its severity. However, studies on the relationship between insomnia and childhood maltreatment and the mediating role of rumination are scarce. METHODS: The study utilized a cross-sectional study design with 88 adolescents diagnosed with major depressive disorder. Childhood maltreatment, rumination, and insomnia were measured by self-reported questionnaires which included Child Psychological Abuse and Neglect Scale, Rumination Response Scale, and Insomni

Emotional maltreatment and disordered eating in adolescents: testing the mediating role of emotion regulation.

The present study aimed to determine if emotion regulation mediates the relationship between emotional maltreatment and disordered eating behavior in adolescents. Participants were 222 secondary school pupils (aged 14-18 years) from a state high school in the UK. Standardized questionnaire measures were used to gather self-report data on emotional abuse and emotional neglect, functional and dysfunctional emotion regulation strategies and disordered eating behavior. Results showed that disordered eating was associated with emotional abuse, dysfunctional emotion regulation and being female. Mult

Longitudinal trajectories of self-system processes and depressive symptoms among maltreated and nonmaltreated children.

This study used latent growth modeling to investigate longitudinal relationships between self-system processes and depressive symptoms among maltreated (n = 142) and nonmaltreated children (n = 109) aged 6-11 years. On average, self-esteem and self-agency increased and depressive symptoms decreased over time. Multivariate growth modeling indicated that, regardless of gender, physical abuse was negatively related to initial levels of self-esteem, and physical abuse and physical neglect were positively associated with initial levels of depressive symptoms. Emotional maltreatment was predictive o

Agency notification and retrospective self-reports of childhood maltreatment in a 30-Year cohort: Estimating population prevalence from different data sources.

BACKGROUND: There is little known about how two sources of child maltreatment reports correspond, specifically for emotional, physical, sexual abuse and emotional or physical neglect. OBJECTIVE: To compare agency and self-reports of child maltreatment and determine whether they are predicted by similar early life course adverse experiences. Participants Data are taken from a long running birth cohort study (Mater-University of Queensland Study of Pregnancy - MUSP). Mothers (N=7223) were recruited in 1981-83 and their children were followed-up 30 years later (2010-14). In 2000 data from the re

Exploring loneliness in individuals with diabetes - The role of childhood abuse and neglect, and personality functioning: Findings from a German population-based sample.

BACKGROUND: This study examines 1) loneliness frequency in individuals with diabetes, 2) associated factors, and 3) personality functioning and the epistemic stance as underlying mechanisms linking childhood abuse and neglect, and loneliness. METHODS: Using representative population data (N = 2428), loneliness (UCLA-LS) was assessed in individuals with self-reported diabetes (n = 206) and compared to those without. Regression analyses tested age, sex, relationship status, childhood abuse and neglect (ICAST-R), depression and anxiety (PHQ-4), personality functioning (OPD-SQS), and the epistemi

Subtypes of non-suicidal self-injury based on childhood adversity.

The aim of this study was to examine the latent clusters in non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) based on childhood adversity. Data were derived from Waves I (2001-2002) and II (2004-2005) of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions, a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults. Individuals engaging in NSSI (N = 672) comprised the analytic sample. Latent class statistical analysis was undertaken to elucidate the latent structure of NSSI based on child experiences of physical and sexual abuse, neglect, and family violence. Four-classes of respondents were identified v

Alcohol and tobacco use among maltreated and non-maltreated adolescents in a birth cohort.

AIMS: This study examines whether child maltreatment experience predicts adolescent tobacco and alcohol use. METHODS: The subjects were participants in the Mater-University Study of Pregnancy (MUSP), a birth cohort of 7223, of whom 5158 (71.4%) were available for analysis at the 14-year follow-up. Child protection history was obtained from the state's child protection agency and confidentially linked. Exposure to reported child maltreatment was the primary predictor variable. The outcome variables were self-reported smoking and alcohol use. Associations were adjusted for potential confounders

Prototype-oriented contrastive mean-teacher for unsupervised domain adaptive object detection.

Unsupervised domain adaptive object detection (UDA-OD) aims to deploy a detector trained on source domain(s) to a new, unlabeled target domain. Carrying out mean-teacher self-training for UDA-OD poses a significant challenge, given that its success depends heavily on the quality of pseudo boxes. While many earlier researches have mainly centered on cross-domain transferability, they often neglect the rich intra- and inter-domain semantic structures. As a result, this neglect empirically restricts the discriminative abilities of the learning model. In our study, we have found a notable alignmen

Associations between child maltreatment, cigarette smoking, and nicotine dependence in young adults with a history of regular smoking.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether childhood maltreatment is associated with smoking behaviors and lifetime nicotine dependence and if associations are moderated by sex. We examined these associations among individuals who ever reported being regular smokers. METHODS: Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, we examined relationships between retrospectively self-reported child maltreatment (parent/caregiver-perpetrated emotional, physical, sexual abuse, and neglect; and non-parent/caregiver-perpetrated sexual abuse) and self-report

Childhood maltreatment linked to greater symptom severity and poorer quality of life and function in social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of data examining the prevalence and impact of childhood maltreatment in patients presenting with a primary diagnosis of social anxiety disorder (SAD). We thus examined the presence of a broad spectrum of childhood maltreatment, including physical, sexual, and emotional abuse and neglect, in treatment-seeking individuals with the generalized subtype of SAD (GSAD). We hypothesized that a history of childhood maltreatment would be associated with greater SAD symptom severity and poorer associated function. METHODS: One hundred and three participants with a primary

Eco-Emotion Profiles Among Parents and Links to Violent and Neglectful Parenting: Parental Burnout as a Mediating Pathway.

Climate change is a psychosocial stressor with implications for parenting and child safety. Many parents experience eco-emotions that can tax caregiving resources and self-regulation, yet evidence is scarce on how eco-emotion profiles relate to parental burnout and violent and neglectful parenting. This study aimed to identify eco-emotion profiles and to test whether parental burnout explains associations with psychological aggression, physical assault, and neglect toward children. Participants were 1,203 cisgender heterosexual Italian parents (70.16% mothers; M = 45.60, SD = 9.37) who complet

Health risky behaviors among rural-to-urban migrant workers in China: prevalence, patterns, and association with distal and proximal factors.

BACKGROUND: Health Risky Behaviors (HRBs) pose a significant public health challenge, particularly among migrant workers in China who face unfavorable living and working conditions. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of HRBs in rural-to-urban migrant workers, as well as explore factors associated with HRBs from both distal and proximal perspectives. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey involving 2,065 rural-to-urban migrant workers was conducted. Participants completed a structured questionnaire assessing HRBs, distal factors (school dropout, peer victimization, p

Population-Based Estimates of Associations Between Child Maltreatment Types: A Meta-Analysis.

Although it is accepted that experiences of child maltreatment are multidimensional and often include several correlated but distinct experiences, many clinical and research decisions regarding exposure and treatment do not consider their potential overlap or potential independence. The purpose of this meta-analysis-using a single retrospective self-report measure, the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), in population-representative samples-was to investigate the magnitude and specificity of associations between forms of child maltreatment. A systematic review of studies available on PubMed,
