Suicidal behavior in dementia: a special risk in semantic dementia.

BACKGROUND: Some studies report a low suicide risk in general dementia and in Alzheimer's disease (AD). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate suicidal behavior among patients with semantic dementia (SD), a disorder that impairs semantic knowledge. METHODS: We reviewed the presence of active suicidal behavior and related factors among 25 patients with SD compared to 111 age-matched patients with early-onset AD. RESULTS: In all, 5 (20%) patients with SD had suicidal behavior (2 successfully killed themselves) compared to 1 (0.9%) with AD (P < .001). There was significantly more depression and greater premor

Verbal creativity in semantic variant primary progressive aphasia.

Emergence of visual and musical creativity in the setting of neurologic disease has been reported in patients with semantic variant primary progressive aphasia (svPPA), also called semantic dementia (SD). It is hypothesized that loss of left anterior frontotemporal function facilitates activity of the right posterior hemispheric structures, leading to de novo creativity observed in visual artistic representation. We describe creativity in the verbal domain, for the first time, in three patients with svPPA. Clinical presentations are carefully described in three svPPA patients exhibiting verbal

Generalization of word retrieval following semantic feature treatment.

OBJECTIVES: The effectiveness of a Semantic Feature Treatment (SFT) at increasing word retrieval accuracy of untreated words was examined in relation to the influence of the number of shared features with treated words. Generalization of these improvements to discourse was also examined. METHODS: Three adults with chronic aphasia completed 12 SFT sessions. Generalization to untreated words with many shared features (SFs) and with no shared features (NSFs), as well as generalization to discourse tasks, was analyzed. RESULTS: All participants improved in word retrieval accuracy for treated wor

The use of a modified semantic features analysis approach in aphasia.

Several studies have reported improved naming using the semantic feature analysis (SFA) approach in individuals with aphasia. Whether the SFA can be modified and still produce naming improvements in aphasia is unknown. The present study was designed to address this question by using a modified version of the SFA approach. Three, rather than the typical six, features were used, and written along with verbal responses were allowed in an individual with both aphasia and apraxia of speech. A single-subject multiple-baseline design across behaviors was used to treat naming of single objects across

The association between semantic dementia and surface dyslexia in Japanese.

One theory about reading suggests that producing the correct pronunciations of written words, particularly less familiar words with an atypical spelling-sound relationship, relies in part on knowledge of the word's meaning. This hypothesis has been supported by reports of surface dyslexia in large case-series studies of English-speaking/reading patients with semantic dementia (SD), but would have increased credibility if it applied to other languages and writing systems as well. The hypothesis predicts that, of the two systems used to write Japanese, SD patients should be unimpaired at oral re

Knowledge of semantic categories in normal aged: Influence of education.

UNLABELLED: Semantic memory seems to resist the effects of time, remaining stable even in more advanced ages. OBJECTIVE: To verify the effect of schooling level on semantic knowledge (non-living items) in normal aged. METHOD: 48 aged individuals were divided into three groups (based on schooling) and evaluated. Three tests were applied: verbal fluency, naming and figure classification. RESULTS: We verified that the group with greater schooling (>8 years) differed to the illiterate and low schooling groups in most of the tasks, evoking more items in verbal fluency, correctly naming more item

Treating anomia in semantic dementia: improvement, maintenance, or both?

A treatment programme for AK, an anomic patient with semantic dementia is described. The programme was based on home practice and resulted in re-learning the names of some objects AK could not name and/or comprehend prior to the treatment. The effects of treatment were still present one month post-treatment for items that AK could not name but could comprehend prior to treatment. In addition to items that AK could not name, items that she could both understand and name were also included in the programme. This allowed us to evaluate the influence of practice on the retention of words that appe

Semantic dementia and primary progressive aphasia: a problem of categorization?

The relationship between semantic dementia (SD) and primary progressive aphasia (PPA) has been the subject of debate ever since the syndromes were first described, in converging streams of research from the neuropsychological and neurologic communities. The most salient clinical features of SD are anomia with circumlocution and semantic paraphasia, single-word comprehension deficit, and reduced category fluency. Of critical importance is the fact that patients also show deficits on non-verbal tasks using visual, auditory, and other modalities, suggesting that the key impairment in SD is a brea

Spatio-temporal cortical dynamics of phonemic and semantic fluency.

Hemodynamic brain imaging and lesion studies have suggested differential involvement of expressive language-related cortical regions based on the phonemic versus semantic characteristics of verbal cues. The aims of this study were: 1) to elucidate the relative timing of the activity of inferior frontal and anterior insular versus motor and supplementary motor cortex during a fluency task and 2) to assess potential differences in the location or timing of activity in anterior and posterior language areas based on letter versus category cues. Using magnetic source imaging (MSI), we found signifi

Autobiographical Memory and Autoneotic Consciousness in a case of Semantic Dementia.

Investigations of retrograde amnesia have contributed to a better understanding of the cerebral structures involved in remote memory. Such studies have suggested that neocortical regions such as the anterior temporal lobe play a major role in both the storage and retrieval of remote episodic and semantic information. Semantic dementia (SD), characterised as a focal anterior temporal lobe atrophy, offers an opportunity to study episodic remote memory, especially in the absence of day-to-day memory dysfunctioning, which takes place in permanent amnesic syndromes. Few studies have investigated au

Neuromagnetic evidence for early semantic access in word recognition.

Magnetic brain responses recorded in the human magnetoencephalogram (MEG) distinguished between words with different semantics but carefully matched for frequency and length. Multiple recordings from a single subject showed that 100 ms following stimulus onset, significantly stronger neuromagnetic responses were elicited by words with strong multimodal semantic associations than by other word material. At this early processing step, there was a highly significant correlation (0.80) between the magnitude of brain responses to individual words recorded over parieto-occipital areas and their sema

Semantic information is used by a deep dyslexic to parse compounds.

We report a case study of a 48 year-old patient, J.O., who was tested 20 years after the removal of a tumor in the left temporal-parietal region. This surgery and subsequent radiation resulted in right side paralysis and numerous language problems. Tests of J.O.'s single word reading abilities indicate that she could be classified as a deep dyslexic with over 16% of her errors in word naming having a clear semantic relationship with the target word (Coltheart, 1980). We examined her ability to read compound words aloud and following Libben (1993) we provide evidence that J.O. is a second case

Interaction of cortex and hippocampus in a model of amnesia and semantic dementia.

We describe a systems-level computational model, called TraceLink, that can explain the major characteristics of the neuropsychology of amnesia and of semantic dementia, a recently discovered syndrome in which there is a progressive loss of semantic memory. It also approximates the normal forgetting curve and presents an explanation of why spaced learning is more efficient than massed learning. A central assumption is that consolidation of memory takes place, probably during dream sleep. The model consists of three systems: trace system (certain parts of the neocortex), link system (includes t

Autism by another name? Semantic and pragmatic impairments in children.

The literature on children with language disorders that are characterized by semantic and pragmatic impairments is reviewed and the conclusion is drawn that some of these conditions may stem from the same fundamental cognitive and interpersonal difficulties that are found in early childhood autism. A summary is presented of recent relevant research and theory in the field of autism and suggestions are offered on how these ideas might be applied to children showing semantic and pragmatic difficulties.

Openness to Experience Modulates the Neural Dynamics of Semantic Processing.

Personality fundamentally shapes language processing, yet the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying this relationship remain poorly understood. Openness to Experience (openness), as measured by the NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), has been associated with enhanced creativity and engagement with novel semantic information. This study examined how openness modulates neural dynamics of semantic processing using event-related potentials (ERPs) during a semantic category verification task. Participants evaluated category relatedness across four levels of semantic structure, including high typica

Exponential-growth underestimation: Semantic framing and information availability.

Exponential growth is consistently underestimated. Although this tendency reflects difficulty in processing nonlinear growth, its magnitude may also be sensitive to semantic context and heuristic influences. Across three preregistered experiments (total N = 2836), participants estimated mathematically equivalent exponential-growth problems framed as representing coronavirus infections or recoveries. Across experiments, participants' estimates were closer to the correct answers when the numerical progressions represented coronavirus infections rather than recoveries (i.e., they showed less unde

From pectus to breast: anatomical and semantic gendering of the thorax.

Anatomical terminology is often assumed to be structurally precise and historically stable. However, the anterior thoracic region demonstrates significant semantic transformation across time. In classical Latin, pectus referred broadly to the chest without sexual specification. In modern English, the term "breast" predominantly denotes the female mammary gland. This study investigates how a structurally stable anatomical region underwent progressive linguistic gendering. A qualitative historical-anatomical analysis was conducted integrating: (1) philological examination of classical Latin and

Understanding Understanding: Reconnecting Theories of Human Semantic Knowledge.

At the close of the twentieth century, human semantic memory was thought to be organized around dedicated, domain-specific modules operating independently of one another and of perception, action, and much of language. The intervening years have marked a transition toward a more holistic view in which semantics emerges from learned mappings among sensory, motor, and language representations, with recent work beginning to integrate semantic representation with theories of cognitive control and attention. This article reviews the reasons for this remarkable change in perspective, provides a snap

DyMamba: dynamic Mamba for microscopy image semantic segmentation.

MOTIVATION: Segmentation of cell bodies and organelles in microscopy images is critical for biological research, particularly in scenarios with multiple regions of interest where spatial continuity is essential. The Mamba architecture, derived from State Space Models (SSMs), has recently gained attention for efficiently modeling long-range dependencies in sequences, achieving excellent results in both natural and medical image segmentation. However, in vision tasks, current Mamba scanning strategies mainly focus on raster-scanning and local-scanning, which introduce spatial discontinuities, se
