Nitric oxide induced by ketamine/xylazine anesthesia maintains hepatic blood flow during hypothermia.

Among the anesthetics influencing the nitric oxide (NO) pathway, ketamine is widely reported in the literature. We researched the variations in blood physiological parameters following ketamine/xylazine- or pentobarbital-induced anesthesia, with particular emphasis on plasmatic NO levels and oxidative stress-related factors. The effects of ketamine on hepatic blood flow during deep hypothermia were also examined. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were anesthetized intraperitoneally with ketamine/xylazine or with sodium pentobarbital. Animals underwent serial blood extraction to analyze acid-base

Sonographic evaluation of biliary ascariasis.

In a prospective 6-month study, sonographic diagnosis of biliary ascariasis was made in 14 patients; in nine patients, the diagnosis was confirmed by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and bile analysis, while in five patients, confirmation was obtained by proven intestinal infestation. No false-positive or false-negative cases were encountered. Ascariasis of the biliary tract was seen on ultrasound as echogenic, non-shadowing images, either as single or multiple strips, with visualization of the digestive tract of the worm as an anechoic inner tube, or as amorphous fragments. Induction of senescence pathways in Kindler syndrome primary keratinocytes.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Kindler syndrome (KS) have loss-of-function mutations in the FERMT1 gene that encodes the focal adhesion component kindlin-1. The major clinical manifestation of KS is epidermal atrophy (premature skin ageing). This phenotypic feature is thought to be related to the decreased proliferation rate of KS keratinocytes; nevertheless, molecular mediators of such abnormal behaviour have not been fully elucidated. OBJECTIVES: To investigate how kindlin-1 deficiency affects the proliferative potential of primary human keratinocytes. METHODS: We serially cultivated nine pr

Inhibition of biofilm formation in Mycobacterium smegmatis by Parinari curatellifolia leaf extracts.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious public health problem worldwide. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) grows as drug tolerant pellicles. Agents that inhibit biofilm formation in M. tuberculosis have the potential to reduce the disease treatment period and improve the quality of tuberculosis chemotherapy. Parinari curatellifolia (P. curatellifolia) leaf extracts are claimed to treat symptoms similar to tuberculosis in ethnomedicinal practices. Mycobacterium smegmatis (M. smegmatis) is a surrogate organism used in antimycobacterial drug discovery assays. In this study, the effe

Hippocampal output suppresses orbitofrontal cortex schema cell formation.

Both the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and the hippocampus (HC) are implicated in the formation of cognitive maps and their generalization into schemas. However, how these areas interact in supporting this function remains unclear, with some proposals supporting a serial model in which the OFC draws on task representations created by the HC to extract key behavioral features and others suggesting a parallel model in which both regions construct representations that highlight different types of information. In the present study, we tested between these two models by asking how schema correlates in

Precipitating antibodies to nuclear antigens in systemic vasculitis.

We have examined sera from 61 patients with systemic vasculitis for precipitating antibodies to components of saline tissue extracts. Precipitins were rare in patients with polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) and their absence helped to distinguish PAN from vasculitis associated with other connective tissue diseases. Precipitins were detected in some patients with other vasculitides. Previously described precipitating antibodies (anti-Ro [SSA] and anti-La [SSB]) were restricted to a few patients with features of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). A different, as yet unidentified, precipitin which reac

Foot and ear disease--the dermatophytid reaction in otology.

Chronic otitis external (COE) is occasionally refractory to treatment and may persist for years. In such cases, a dermatophytid (id) reaction from a fungal infection in a remote location should be suspected. Immunotherapy with dermatophyte (Trichophyton, Oidiomycetes, and Epidermophyton [T.O.E.]) extracts and dust mite, based on serial endpoint titration skin test results, as well as a yeast elimination diet, is the treatment of choice. Fourteen cases of id reaction are described. The primary fungal source was not always obvious, but immunotherapy and diet led to complete resolution of the COE

Increased local concentrations of growth factors from leucocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin do not translate into improved alveolar ridge preservation: An intra-individual mechanistic randomized controlled trial.

AIM: Leucocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) has been tested for enhancing alveolar ridge preservation (ARP), but little is known about the local release profile of growth factors (GF), and the clinical equipoise related to its efficacy remains. This study compared the patterns of GF release, early soft tissue healing, and alveolar ridge resorption following unassisted healing and L-PRF application in non-molar extraction sockets. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Atraumatic tooth extraction of two hopeless teeth per patient was followed by unassisted healing or L-PRF placement to fill the socket in

Histology of connective tissue graft. A case report.

BACKGROUND: Few investigations can be found in the literature on the histological nature of the attachment of connective tissue grafts to root surfaces previously exposed by recession. METHODS: In this case report, a 24-year-old patient was treated with a connective tissue graft combined with a partial-thickness coronally positioned flap for root coverage of Class I Miller recessions at the maxillary right and left canines and first premolars. The treated sites exhibited 83% and 100% root coverage on the right and left sides, respectively. Twelve months later, the case required extraction of

On the management of extraction sites.

Extraction sites may be needed to achieve specific orthodontic goals of positioning the dentition within the craniofacial complex. The fundamental reality that determines the final position of the dentition, however, is the control exercised by the clinician in closure of the extraction sites. A specific treatment objective may require the posterior teeth to remain in a constant position anteroposteriorly as well as vertically, while the anterior teeth occupy the entire extraction site. Another treatment objective may require the reverse, or any number of purposeful alternatives of extraction

Treatment and postretention changes in dental arch width dimensions--a long-term evaluation of influencing cofactors.

The aim of the present long-term follow-up study of orthodontically treated patients was to analyze postretention changes in arch width dimension and to isolate factors that may serve as predictors of long-term prognosis. Pretreatment, end-of-treatment, and postretention (at least 10 years) models of 226 cases with different malocclusions were used to measure intercanine and intermolar width, arch length, sum of the mesiodistal dimension of the incisors, irregularity index, crowding, molar and canine relationship, overjet, and overbite. To assess the influence of initial and end-of-treatment a
