Sexual well-being among partnered women with breast cancer recurrence.

PURPOSE: A woman's risk for sexual disruption after breast cancer recurrence has received little clinical or research attention. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Breast cancer patients recently diagnosed with recurrence (n = 60) were initially assessed at baseline and completed follow-ups at 4, 8, and 12 months. They were compared by age, stage, and duration and frequency of follow-up with matched patients who remained disease free (n = 120). Using linear mixed modeling, the groups were compared in their trajectories of change on measures of sexuality, relationship satisfaction, cancer-specific stress,

Sex partner concurrency, geographic context, and adolescent sexually transmitted infections.

BACKGROUND: Geographic areas characterized by a high prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are critical to the maintenance and persistence of STIs within populations. Sex partner concurrency has been shown to be associated with increased risk for individual-level STIs. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to determine whether gonorrhea rate per census block group and sex partner concurrency independently and interactively are associated with a current bacterial STI among adolescents. STUDY: Face-to-face interviews and urine testing for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisse

Partner notification for HIV and syphilis: effects on sexual behaviors and relationship stability.

BACKGROUND: Partner notification (PN), originally designed for syphilis control, has been used to control the spread of HIV since 1985. Because HIV infection is noncurable, the benefit of contact tracing and treatment demonstrated for the control of syphilis may not apply to HIV. For HIV, PN must facilitate behavior change that will reduce the spread of the infection. One concern is that HIV PN can promote the breakup of old partnerships and increase the acquisition of new partners, thereby spreading HIV infections. GOAL: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of partner notifi

Identifying causal associations between early sexual intercourse or number of sexual partners and major depressive disorders: A bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis.

BACKGROUND: Early sexual intercourse and a greater number of sexual partners have been proved associated with depression. However, the causality of these associations is not clear. METHODS: To unveil the causal associations between sexual factors and major depression disorder (MDD). The bidirectional, two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study was conducted, which used genetic variants associated with two sexual factors (age first had sexual intercourse, n = 406,457; lifetime number of sexual partners, n = 378,882) and MDD (n = 500,199) from the largest genome-wide association studies (GWA

Brains, brawn, and beauty: The complementary roles of intelligence and physical aggression in attracting sexual partners.

The current study compared physical aggression to factors affecting socioeconomic status in the accumulation of sex partners over the life course. Our data sample was drawn from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (men, n = 5,636; women, n = 6,787). Participants were examined in terms of the number of lifetime sex partners they reported, nonrelationship partners, cheating or infidelity, and concurrent relationships. Intelligence and physical violence emerged as being especially likely to boost sex partner accumulation for the number of lifetime sex partners and nonrel

Trauma-Related Disclosure in Sexual Assault Survivors' Intimate Relationships: Associations With PTSD, Shame, and Partners' Responses.

Relative to survivors of other traumatic events, survivors of sexual assault have an increased likelihood of meeting criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They are also comparatively more likely to exhibit higher levels of PTSD symptom severity. Recent research has highlighted the importance of trauma-related disclosure within the context of intimate relationships for posttrauma functioning and recovery, but this phenomenon has yet to be examined specifically in sexual assault survivor samples. Accordingly, this study examines the association of PTSD symptom severity with disclosu

Age differences between sexual partners, behavioural and demographic correlates, and HIV infection on Likoma Island, Malawi.

Patterns of age differences between sexual partners - "age-mixing" - may partially explain the magnitude of HIV epidemics in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, evidence of age-disparity as a risk factor for HIV remains mixed. We used data from a socio-centric study of sexual behaviour in Malawi to quantify the age-mixing pattern and to find associations between relationship characteristics and age differences for 1,922 participants. Three age difference measures were explored as predictors of prevalent HIV infection. We found that for each year increase in male participant age, the average age diffe

Male condom use, multiple sexual partners and HIV: a prospective case-control study in Kinshasa (DRC).

In the Democratic Republic of Congo no previous studies have assessed the factors associated with different patterns of condom use and with multiple sexual partners, and the association between condom use simultaneously taking into account multiple sexual partnerships, and HIV infection. We carried out a prospective case-control study. From December 2010 until June 2012, 1630 participants aged 15-49 getting HIV Voluntary Counseling and Testing in a hospital in Kinshasa were selected. Cases were new HIV diagnosis and controls were HIV-negative participants detected along the study period. We re

Neuroticism and Men's Sexual Coercion as Reported by Both Partners in a Community Sample of Couples.

Compared with other forms of intimate partner violence, very little is known about sexual coercion (SC) and its correlates in intact couples from the general population. Among potential dispositional risk factors for SC, neuroticism has been related to various aspects of couple functioning, including psychological and physical partner abuse. Based on theoretical and empirical evidence, we suggest the existence of two maladaptive profiles on the neuroticism dimension and examine the curvilinear association between neuroticism and men's SC. A total of 299 adult couples completed measures of neur

Couples therapy with childhood sexual abuse survivors (CSA) and their partners: establishing a context for witnessing.

This article proposes a clinical practice for therapy with couples in which one partner suffered sexual abuse in childhood. Such couples often encounter unique difficulties with physical contact, intimacy, sexuality, communication, and trust, and their relationship dynamic may be marked by reenactments of past traumatic relational patterns. This clinical practice is founded on the assumption that establishing the witnessing lacking during the traumatic event in childhood can break the traumatic reenactments in adulthood, and spur recovery. The suggested practice may facilitate twofold witnessi

Incidence of human papillomavirus infection in male sexual partners of women diagnosed with CIN II-III.

INTRODUCTION: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a very common sexually transmitted disease which has been strongly related to cervical cancer and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), penile cancer and intraepithelial and infiltrating anal squamous cell carcinoma. OBJECTIVES: To describe the HPV status of male sexual partners of women diagnosed with CIN II/III and to evaluate the practical usefulness of the HPV detection in urine as a reliable marker of genital high-risk HPV infection in men. METHODS: Ninety-one heterosexual male partners (mean age 32.7) were included in the study.

Factors influencing sexual initiation, multiple partners and condom use among male slum youth in Pune, India.

This study examines the factors that influence sexual behaviours among young unmarried males living in urban slums in India, a population characterised by high vulnerability to STI and HIV infections. Data were collected from 600 unmarried male slum youth to examine the relationships between three outcomes of heterosexual behaviour (age at sexual initiation, number of sexual partners and condom use at first intercourse) and factors within the family/household social environment, peer environment and individual level during the respondents' formative years. Regression analyses found factors wit

Young adult Ecstasy users and multiple sexual partners: understanding the factors underlying this HIV risk practice.

The purposes of this study are to (1) examine the extent to which young adult Ecstasy users recently reported having had multiple sex partners and (2) identify the factors predictive of engaging in this behavior. Potential predictors included demographic characteristics, background and experiences measures, childhood maltreatment experiences, substance use variables, and measures assessing psychological/psychosocial functioning. This research is based on a sample of 283 young adult recurrent users of the drug, Ecstasy. Study participants were recruited in Atlanta, Georgia between August 2002 a
