Is military sexual trauma associated with trading sex among women veterans seeking outpatient mental health care?

A robust association between sexual trauma and trading sex has been documented in civilian samples but has not been examined in veterans. Women veterans experience high rates of sexual victimization across the lifespan, including during military service (military sexual trauma [MST]). Associations between MST and trading sex were examined in 200 women enrolled in a crosssectional study of HIV risks and seroprevalence among women receiving outpatient mental health care at a Veterans Affairs (VA) medical center. Each woman completed an assessment interview composed of validated measures that que

Barriers to pelvic examination and cervical cancer screening in women with sexual trauma histories and sexual pain disorders: A systematic review and clinical practice synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Pelvic examination and cervical cancer screening might be distressing or difficult to access for women with sexual trauma histories or sexual pain disorders. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to synthesize barriers to pelvic examination and cervical screening in these populations and identify trauma-informed adaptations that might improve tolerability and access. SEARCH STRATEGY: PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science Core Collection, PsycINFO, and CINAHL were searched from inception to 1 March 2026. Reference lists and citations were also screened. Discrimination and Posttraumatic Symptomatology Among Trauma-exposed Sexual Minority Women and Transgender and Gender-Diverse People.

Sexual and gender minority women (SMW) and transgender and/or gender-diverse (TGD) people experience high rates of trauma, resulting in mental health disparities such as posttraumatic stress disorder. Nevertheless, contributors to posttraumatic stress symptoms among SMW and TGD people remain underexamined relative to cisgender, heterosexual people. Furthermore, it remains unclear whether stressors uniquely experienced by minoritized populations (e.g., discrimination) contribute to symptoms over and above general stressors (e.g., trauma exposure). The present study used path analysis to test wh

TrusT: A Multicenter Pilot Study of a Manualized Group Therapy Focusing on Trauma-Related Sexual Symptoms.

Trauma-related sexual symptoms are common following interpersonal trauma yet are rarely systematically addressed in trauma-focused treatment. This multicenter pilot study aimed to evaluate the safety, applicability, and preliminary efficacy of a novel manualized group intervention integrating trauma-specific and sex therapy techniques (TrusT). In a multicenter pilot study, 54 individuals assigned female at birth (51 female, 3 non-binary, mean age = 33.8) with a history of interpersonal trauma and persistent sexual symptoms participated in a 12-week group therapy program with weekly sessions. Caregiver emotional support, optimism, and trauma symptoms among adolescents waiting for treatment after disclosing sexual abuse.

OBJECTIVE: It is common for adolescents who recently disclosed sexual abuse to report significant levels of trauma symptoms. Many experience improvement in these symptoms shortly thereafter, even without formal intervention, but little is known about why this happens. This study examines whether adolescent perceptions of caregiver emotional support and adolescent optimism relate to trauma symptoms among adolescents who are on a wait-list for treatment after having disclosed sexual abuse. METHOD: Participants were 223 adolescents who experienced sexual abuse (98% female; Mage = 13.49 years; 52

Vulnerability factors for trauma injuries in female sexual assault patients in a diverse urban city population.

BACKGROUND: Sexual violence presents a major public health concern in the United States with an increase in both incidence and reporting, especially in large metropolitan areas such as New York City. Factors such as age, race, gender, LGBTQIA+ status, mental health conditions, disability, and substance abuse have been identified in current literature as potential vulnerabilities or risk factors in sexual assault patients. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate demographic and vulnerability factors of patients seen within one of New York City's Sexual Assault Forensic Examiners (SAFE) Program and correlate t

The relationship between trauma and sexual health outcomes among transgender women in the US Deep South.

Transgender women are disproportionately affected by sexually transmitted infections (STIs), likely shaped by trauma. In 105 participants, multiple trauma subtypes were linked to lower HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis awareness, lifetime STI history, and recent STI testing. Trauma may contribute to the ongoing STI burden in this population.

Female veterans with military sexual trauma history and posttraumatic stress disorder display impaired fear extinction learning.

Two decades of conditioned fear studies reveal impaired extinction in traumatized military and civilian populations with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We aimed to test fear extinction in women with military sexual trauma (MST), a highly traumatized and largely understudied population. Our well-established, acoustic startle-based fear acquisition and extinction paradigm was administered to 51 age-matched female veterans with prior exposure to MST receiving healthcare at one of three VA Medical Centers. Thirty women had a PTSD diagnosis and 21 did not, per clinician-administered and self

Association of psychiatric diagnoses and military sexual trauma type with denied posttraumatic stress disorder service connection.

BACKGROUND: Annually, thousands of Veterans file Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) disability claims ("service connection") for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to military sexual trauma (MST). Service connection provides free covered healthcare and compensation. To qualify, Veterans must meet PTSD diagnostic criteria, have sufficient evidence of the MST, and establish a link between their PTSD symptoms and MST. METHODS: Among VA-enrolled Veterans who filed for MST-related PTSD service connection between 2017 and 2022 (N = 19,509), we modeled the probability of denied PTSD serv

Network analysis of PTSD symptoms following childbirth and comorbid conditions among women with sexual trauma history.

PURPOSE: Women with a history of sexual trauma (ST) have heightened risk for postpartum psychopathology. Although ST increases risk for traumatic delivery and maternal psychopathology, knowledge of the functional connections among various psychiatric symptoms and complicated delivery remains limited. METHODS: We used regularized partial correlation networks to examine connections between symptoms of childbirth-related PTSD (CB-PTSD), depression, anxiety, somatization, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and complicated delivery (e.g., presence of obstetric complications, preterm birth, advanced ma

Gender as a moderator of associations between military sexual trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder treatment utilization.

The present study sought to investigate whether gender moderates the relationship between military sexual trauma (MST) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment utilization, among veterans with clinically significant PTSD symptoms. Participants were 2,664 veterans with probable PTSD from a nationwide, population-based survey. Participants reported sociodemographic information, history of MST (including military sexual harassment and military sexual assault), and lifetime receipt of PTSD psychotherapy and medication treatment. We found that gender significantly moderated relationships

Exploring the roles of compassion and post-traumatic stress disorder on global distress after sexual trauma.

OBJECTIVES: Recovery from sexual trauma can be complex and multi-faceted. Most current psychological treatment protocols for trauma use a cognitive model of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, sexual trauma may include specific complexities beyond that of a cognitive model of PTSD, such as relational factors. The distress experienced after sexual abuse may involve variables not exclusive to a PTSD model. Compassion focused therapy (CFT) is an approach that incorporates evolutionary, relational and social perspectives. This study explored the relationships between variables associat

Subjective Sleep Disturbances in Sexual Assault Survivors: Associations With Trauma and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Severity.

Prior work implicates sleep disturbance in the development and maintenance of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, the majority of this literature has focused on combat veteran men, and limited work has examined links between sleep disturbance and PTSD symptoms in sexual assault survivors. This is a notable gap in the literature, as sexual trauma is disproportionately likely to result in PTSD and is more common in women. We sought to examine the relations between subjective sleep disturbance, sexual assault severity, and PTSD symptoms in a sample of sexual assault survivors with PTSD

Mental health consequences of military sexual trauma: results from a national survey in the French military.

BACKGROUND: Military sexual trauma (MST) is a major public health concern, given its prevalence and mental health sequelae. This phenomenon is particularly prevalent among women in the US military, although more cases involve men given their overrepresentation. Little is known about MST and its consequences in other military settings, including in Europe. METHODS: This study draws from a national survey in the French military, including 1268 servicemen and 232 servicewomen. We conducted bivariate and multivariate analysis, using simple and multinomial logistic regressions to evaluate the asso

Characteristics associated with non-suicidal self-injury among veterans seeking military sexual trauma-related mental healthcare.

Military sexual trauma (MST) is a serious issue among Veterans; it is associated with increased rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), both of which are correlated with poorer mental health outcomes, including increased suicide risk. Additional insight into the characteristics associated with NSSI among Veterans with MST can help identify individuals at increased risk for suicide and other negative outcomes and improve care for Veterans with a history of MST. The current study was comprised of 327 Veterans referred for MST-related mental health servic

Prevalence of Childhood Sexual Abuse Among Women Using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire: A Worldwide Meta-Analysis.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a common form of childhood maltreatment. Several studies have shown that CSA adversely affects the physical and mental health. Numerous studies have evaluated the prevalence of CSA among females using various instruments. In this meta-analysis, we estimated the rate of CSA among women using the short form of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire for the first time. Four databases (PsycINFO, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase) were systematically searched for studies published as of April 2, 2018. Forty-eight articles (53 groups of samples) covering 22,224 individ

Pragmatic trial of brief warrior renew group therapy for military sexual trauma in VA primary care.

This is a pragmatic trial of a brief version of Warrior Renew, an emerging evidence-based treatment for military sexual trauma (MST) delivered in a Department of Veterans Affairs women's health clinic primary care setting. The full protocol meets twice a week for 12 weeks (24 sessions); however, Brief Warrior Renew meets for 8 sessions. Brief Warrior Renew is a manualized protocol addressing coping skills for affect management (e.g., triggers and anxiety) and unique aspects of MST including anger-resentments due to injustice-betrayal, and self-blame. It also addresses interpersonal factors suc

Linguistic Analysis as a Method for Assessing Symptoms After Sexual Trauma Among Female Adolescent Psychiatric Inpatients.

Using a sample of female psychiatric inpatient adolescents, the current study aimed to extend this literature to an adolescent sample for the first time by examining if linguistic markers and their subcategories (cognitive process words, pronoun use, and somatosensory detail) in a trauma account are related to trauma symptomology and recovery during inpatient care. Results indicated that greater use of body words and fewer insight words were related to increased trauma symptoms at admission. In addition, use of fewer cognitive process words at admission predicted greater symptom change at disc

Prevalence of Sexual Trauma History Using Behaviorally Specific Methods of Assessment in First Year College Students.

There are several challenges associated with evaluating the prevalence of sexual trauma, including child sexual abuse and adult sexual assault. The aim of this study was to assess sexual trauma prevalence rates among first year college students (N = 954) using behaviorally specific questions and a more representative recruitment sample that did not rely on self-selection. Participants completed a list of sexual trauma questions, including general questions containing labels such as "rape" or "abuse" as well as behaviorally specific questions that describe specific behaviors that qualify as sex

Influence of the 5-HT3A Receptor Gene Polymorphism and Childhood Sexual Trauma on Central Serotonin Activity.

BACKGROUND: Gene-environment interactions are important for understanding alterations in human brain function. The loudness dependence of auditory evoked potential (LDAEP) is known to reflect central serotonergic activity. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the 5-HT3A serotonin receptor gene are associated with psychiatric disorders. This study aimed to investigate the effect between 5-HT3A receptor gene polymorphisms and childhood sexual trauma on the LDAEP as an electrophysiological marker in healthy subjects. METHODS: A total of 206 healthy subjects were recruited and evaluated usin
